How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, is laid for your faith in His excellent Word! This great hymn dates to the time of John Rippon, who began a 63-year pastorate at London's Carter's Lane Baptist Church in 1775. During his ministry, Rippon edited a new hymnal, assisted by his Minister of Music, Robert Keene. Published in 1787, it was a runaway best seller that gave us, among other hymns, the classic "How Firm a Foundation." No one knows who the hymn's composer was, for the line reserved for the author's name simply bore the letter "K," leading many scholars to attribute the composition to Keene
.
Whoever its author, the hymn proclaims truth. Pick up a book of philosophy and you'll get a compilation of thoughts—mainly questions—by baffled men trying to make sense of life. When you open the Bible, you get a collection of truths, maxims, doctrines, promises, and commands that are consistent, logical, truthful, centered around the person of Christ, and satisfying to both mind and soul. They give us the answers to both life and death.

Make sure you read your Bible daily. It's a firm foundation for your faith!

What more can He say than to you He hath said, You who unto Jesus for refuge have fled?
John Rippon
