Out of the decade of the Sixties, especially promoted at the Woodstock music festival, came the slogan, "If it feels good, do it!" The roots of that slogan may go back to an English writer, hedonist, and occultist named Aleister Crowley who wrote, "‘Do as thou wilt’ shall be the whole of the law" (1904). Later, the pagan Wiccan religion defined it a bit further saying, "Do as thou wilt so long as it harms no other."

And there’s the catch: "so long as it harms no other." It’s far too easy to do what we want without regard to others, and sometimes not even to be aware that others have been hurt. And what about ourselves? Is it okay to do something that feels good at the moment but will definitely feel bad later? When we sin, we are ultimately and always the biggest loser. When Joseph’s brothers sold him into slavery, they may have felt justified at the moment. But when they found Joseph alive in Egypt years later, they were humiliated and ashamed. Regardless of how right or how good it seems, sin never leads to life. If you have an idea that seems right, make sure God agrees before going ahead.

The only time to do something when it feels good is if it feels good to God.
