• The Top (and Bottom) 10 Reasons People Say They Have Sex
Expressing love and showing affection were in the top 10 for both men and women, but they did take a back seat to the clear No. 1: "I was attracted to the person."
Researchers at the University of Texas spent five years and their own money to study the overlooked "why" behind sex while others were spending their time on the "how."
What I found a bit surprising, (but probably shouldn't have in today's lust-filled, secular environment) was:
"None of the gender differences are all that great," Meston said. "Men were more likely to be opportunistic towards having sex, so if sex were there and available they would jump on it, somewhat more so than women. Women were more likely to have sex because they felt they needed to please their partner."
This sounds more like it:
But this is among college students, when Meston conceded "hormones run rampant." She predicted huge differences when older groups of people are studied.
Those "bottom reasons" why people have sex were all very sad! The first one was quite disturbing, to say the least! Notice the last one...
BOTTOM 10 REASONS TO HAVE SEX FOR MEN
1. The person offered to give me drugs for doing it.
2. I wanted to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease.
3. I wanted to punish myself.
4. I wanted to break up my relationship.
5. I wanted to get a job.
6. It was an initiation rite
7. Someone offered me money
8. I was afraid to say "no" due to possibility of physical harm
9. To make money
10. To feel closer to God
BOTTOM 10 REASONS TO HAVE SEX FOR WOMEN
1. I wanted to give someone else a sexually transmitted disease.
2. Someone offered me money to do it.
3. I wanted to get a raise.
4. It was an initiation rite to a club or organization.
5. I wanted to get a job.
6. To get a promotion
7. The person offered me drugs for it
8. To punish myself
9. To hurt/humiliate the person
10. To feel closer to God
Maybe #10 is in there because God's Word says:
Gal 5:16 I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.
Gal 5:17 For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; and these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.
If sex is being used for something other than the reason that God created it for, perhaps feelings of guilt are inevitably present when it is misused?
Gal 5:19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery,[fn3] fornication, uncleanness, lewdness,
Gal 5:20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies,
Gal 5:21 envy, murders,[fn4] drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God
The top ten reasons weren't surprising to me (well, maybe the order of some of them), but I was left with the feeling that so much of it shows that sex is often used by people for selfish reasons today, rather than achieving a true, monogamous, loving type of sexual relationship.
This study didn't seem complete. I was left with many other questions.
It just goes to show that the love described in the Bible is nothing like the lust that many pursue in this life.
Here are 61 Bible verses that describe "love."
Sex is a good gift from God Himself! But, perhaps, it is a perfect gift within the bonds of Holy Matrimony.
Jam 1:17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.
Some Scriptures:
Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Gal 5:23 gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.
Gal 5:24 And those who are Christ's have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
Gal 5:25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.
Gal 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another.
It is true. The act of sex is very different from love. They can easily be separated from each other. In today's world, this is becoming more and more apparent (unfortunately). God's commandments (against adultery, fornication etc.) are often completely ignored.
1Jo 5:3 For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous.
Eph 5:25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,
Eph 5:26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word,
Eph 5:27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish.
Eph 5:28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself.
Eph 5:29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church.
Eph 5:30 For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.
Eph 5:31 "For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh."[fn4]
Eph 5:32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.
Eph 5:33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
When you've got that kind of love, you have everything!
1Cr 13:4 (NIV) Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.
1Cr 13:5 It is not rude, it is not self‑seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.
1Cr 13:6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
1Cr 13:7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
1Cr 13:8 Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away.
