A Way to the Manger: The Gift of Eternal Life

It's a classic plot line of spy thrillers and edge-of-your-seat espionage movies: The protagonist is sent into hostile territory where he is to make contact with the one individual who can "save the world." Meanwhile, the bad guys are searching for the same secret agent to take him out of the picture before the good guys can make contact with him. The twists and turns are breathtaking. All the while, the clock is ticking . . . .

This good versus evil storyline, centered on one person who can save the day, is central to the world's literature because of the element of truth it contains. God sent one "contact" into the world to save it from destruction—to offer eternal life. He didn't send multiple saviors at different times and in different cultures. One Savior was all that was needed, so one is the number He sent. And His name is Jesus. When the Bible says there is no other name under heaven by which we must be saved, it's speaking of Him.

At Christmas we celebrate God's provision. Instead of wondering, "Why just one?" we celebrate the fact that One is all we need. And through Him, we receive the gift of eternal life.

For a small reward, a man will hurry away on a long journey; while for eternal life, many will hardly take a single step.
