Anyone who has ever done something wrong and covered up his sin—whether for an hour, a week, a year, or longer—knows the gnawing guilt that refuses to go away. Depending on the sensitivity of one's heart, the gnawing is more or less intense. But it is always there. After his sinful relationship with Bathsheba, King David of Israel described his year-long agony this way: "When I kept silent, my bones grew old through my groaning all the day long. For day and night Your hand was heavy upon me; my vitality was turned into the drought of summer" (Psalm 32:3-4).

We know David hid his sin of adultery (and complicity in murder or Bathsheba's husband) for at least nine months since the child of the affair was born before the prophet Nathan exposed David's sin (2 Samuel 11:27-12:1). When he finally confessed his sins, he had a dark heart to deal with. How would it be made clean? Thankfully, God made David's heart "whiter than snow" (Psalm 51:7). Since it was "against God, God only" that David sinned (verse 4), God was the only one who could make David's heart clean again.

If your heart is dark because of sin, confess it to God and let Him give you a clean heart again.

The pure heart is God's paradise where He delights to walk.
