The Opening of the Olympics in London?

In one word...  BIZARRO!  OH MY GOSH...  FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE I CAN AGREE WITH MATT LAUER WHEN HE SAID:

I DON'T KNOW IF THAT'S CUTE....

(long pause....)

OR CREEPY!!!

Have the Brits officially LOST THEIR MINDS????

I could hardly type this out because I was laughing so hard after Lauer's comment!

Well, at least after the commercial they are playing the theme from Chariots of Fire and showing clips of that movie.  Oh wait....there's a guy running who can't keep up.

Forget what I said...this is STUPID!!!

Maybe I just don't get British humor....

I recall absolutely HATING the "Beatles Love" performance in Las Vegas a few years ago.

The British are....well....just STRANGE!!!!

Now, I need to see what other bloggers are writing.

P.S.  The fact that they used J.K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter warlock series)  as a "speaker" during the opening segment...and there were evil characters all around...just shows how out of touch with reality (and God, for that matter) the producers of this awful fiasco really are!

Olympics: Opening ceremony grapples with weighty issues
A celebration of free healthcare, the trade union struggle, the battle for women’s rights and a fleeting lesbian kiss: the Olympics opening ceremony Friday did not shy away from weighty social issues. Unsurprisingly, the show devised by Oscar-winning British director Danny Boyle drew accusations from the British political right that it had strayed into “leftie” issues. Aidan Burley, a lawmaker from Prime Minister David Cameron’s ruling Conservative party, tweeted: “The most leftie opening ceremony I have ever seen — more than Beijing, the capital of a communist state! Hi Christine,
Wasn't sure if I was going to comment on this or not, but obviously I am.
I watched the opening ceremony last night and this morning (gotta love the DVR). First, let me preface by saying, you put leftists in charge, you're going to get leftist content. That being said, my feelings are mixed. The "tribute" to the industrial revolution was just plain WEIRD! (And contained plenty of little lefty subtle jabs against the industrial revolution.) And the tribute to the NHS was just sick! (Sorry, simply couldn't resist the pun!) Even if the NHS were as wonderful as they were trying to make it out to be (and you don't have to dig very deep in order to learn that it's not!) it still would have been highly distasteful. I didn't mind the tribute to children's literature, with the classic villains and Mary Poppins chasing them away and tucking the kids in, that could have been really cute, except that it had the lowest production value of the entire event. (I'll come back to this section in a moment.) I enjoyed the Chariots of Fire music, but then they just made fun of the movie (and thus the real life story) which, again, was distasteful. It was clever using the industrial revolution bit as a way of having the volunteers take away set dressing that came before it, and the forging of the Olympic ring was kind of cool. The bit with the Queen and "James Bond" was also clever, and well done, though it left me wondering how many people actually believe the Queen parachuted in... ???
I quite enjoyed the parade of nations, though I had to ignore a lot of the ridiculous commentary that was going on during it, they really need to step up their game on that! Of course, the guy that put the ceremony together had nothing to do with the parade of nations, that is Olympic tradition. I also thought the lighting of the torch was quite beautiful, the high point of the entire affair.
Now, back to the Children's Literature as promised. I have no issue with J K Rowling being involved with this. She is British after all, and she wrote the most popular and successful Children's book series in history, and from the nature of your comment I'm thinking it's safe to assume that you have not read the Harry Potter saga. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) Now I can see having an issue with her because she is at least a little to the left politically, but she's really not very outspoken about it. As to her as a writer, she's absolutely brilliant. The Harry Potter Saga is a wonderful work of fiction, and remember that first and foremost, it is fiction. There is not demonic activity or Satanic stuff going on in the series. Basically the idea is that (within the fictional world she created) there is magic, people who can access and use that magic are called Witches and Wizards. Within that framework she tells a coming of age story, a story of good vs. evil. And while this saga is by no means a Christian story, it borrows very heavily from the Christian world view. It is a story of love and self sacrifice. And moreover, it got kids reading like nothing had for many years before. You had kids that had never read an entire book before reading a 7 book saga that totals over 4,000 pages. I have to applaud that, and having read the entire Saga (twice) I can assure you, it's not some evil thing that we need to be scared of. If you're going to condemn Rowling for Harry Potter, you will have to condemn C. S. Lewis and JRR Tolkien along with her.
I hope you find this adds to the discussion.

    Hi Matt!

Good to hear from you again!

Sorry it took so long to release your comments. We were vacationing in Kauai, got home after midnight on July 28th. I didn't sign on yesterday. Had jet lag, but managed to get a few things done around the house.

Thanks so much for your great analysis of the opening of the games in London. You did quite well in presenting your opinions!

It was nice to hear someone agree with me about the weird parts. It seemed that every newspaper and commentary that I read or saw (i.e. USA Today) only had praise for the entire thing!

You are correct that I took a pass on the Harry Potter series. The reason is because the Bible tells us not to get involved with any type of sorcery, magic spells etc. To me, they can be (and often are) used for evil and often mock God's power, majesty, and authority. Perhaps the Potter series didn't do that, but I was just not interested in it at all.

I have found that many people have let evil things discouraged in God's Word into their lives. Whether it involves the mockery of God, Jesus Christ, His Word, the power of the Holy Spirit, and His created order; we see it happening more and more each day. Whether it is a subtle kind of thing (like, perhaps, the Potter series) or a more blatant expose'(like "gay" marriage) - the godlessness just keeps getting pounded into people's minds until they no longer hold reverence for Him. Just my opinion, of course.

I only watched a small portion of the parade of nations. I got busy doing something else. But my adult children were watching it in another room and I heard one say "I can't believe they are going to commercial when the USA athletes are coming in!" I thought that was insulting. Plus, I did not like how the Olympic organizers refused to recognize the slain Olympic Israeli athletes in Munich, 1972, through a moment of silence for them. That was a huge slap in the face.

It is horrific to see the escalation of Jew hatred ratcheting up again throughout the world. Whether it is the rude treatment of Israel's Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu by pResident Obama, or the blatant radical Islamic vitriol by crazies like the Imams and Ahmadinijad in Iran, the evil, Hitler-type hatred against God's chosen people is still happening at an alarming rate. People just don't learn from history, so they don't seem to care about it - at all.

Sorry to get off topic, but I must say I was heartened to hear Mitt Romney's speech in Israel. He has a long standing friendship with Netanyahu and a love for the Jewish people, which is non-existent (IMHO) in the ObaMARXIST administration.

One more thing. It was interesting to hear my adult daughter say that "God Save the Queen" sounded like "My Country 'Tis Of Thee." They probably don't sing that in public schools here anymore...which is sad.

Christine shared “The Truth Gap” by Bill Muehlenberg:

“They may profess to be believers, but they live, think and act just like pagans . . . That is because they have never learned to think biblically and they have never developed a biblical worldview . . . As such, they are breaking the greatest commandment which Jesus gave: to love God with all your heart, all your strength, and all your mind.”

I lived, thought and acted like a pagan during more than 20 years acting out as a lesbian and more than 30 years acting out as a drunk trying to deal with my inner emotional pain that I did not understand.

I was hurting and did not know I was in pain for many years, because I numbed myself with sex, alcohol and other drugs. There is a better way. It is the truth that sets one free. The truth about myself set me free. It was not the truth about other people.

The Messiah said, “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6). There is a better way to live. We all have a choice to obey the voice we hear. Everyone is a slave to the voice one obeys. One can obey sin that leads to death, or obedience that leads to righteousness (Romans 6:16).

The most amazing thing about the written Word of God is that it is absolutely ONE Truth. Why? There is only ONE Word of God, the Holy ONE of ISRAEL.

Much love to you, Christine and all your readers who hunger for truth and righteousness. They shall be filled (Matthew 5:6). ~ ss

    Dear Susan,

The August, 2012 Turning Points devotional focuses on the "scraps of life." Dr. Jeremiah draws an analogy between the scraps of fabric (that are often disgarded) and the scraps of our lives that we often wish we could do over. But those scraps can also be used to create a gorgeous quilt! They CAN be useful!

This brief synopsis doesn't do it justice, but one section was quite encouraging.

Despite the fact that we all sin and fall short of the glory of God, we can be encouraged by Psalm 51 which recounts David's psalm of repentance and confession following his disastrous episode with Bathsheba and the killing of Uriah.

    Dr. Jeremiah writes:

"Have you ever prayed, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me" (verse 10)? If so, you are praying words that were forged on the anvil of David's guilt and remorse over his choices. We wish he had never made those bad choices, but that time in his life produced words of instruction and encouragement for us.

Psalm 32, another of David's psalms, may have been written in the wake of the same affair. If not the Bathsheba episode, it is David's recounting of how miserable his life became when he concealed some sin from God. And how blessed it became when he made things right."

Dr. Jeremiah goes on to explain that Psalm 139 discusses God's omnipresence and how he sees and knows everything. David realized that God knew about his sin because there is no escaping God's presence!

Dr. J: "In any case, the scraps from David's life have become a comfort and inspiration to millions of people as they look for value in their own wrong turns in life."

Isn't that awesome?? Dr. J goes on to write, "save your scraps for the Master Tailor!" We are to regret and render them useless! There is a "godly sorrow [that] produces repentance" (2 Coprinthians 7:10) --which is what we should do: repent or revive and be useful!"

Dr. J: "If we have sinned, we need to repent. If we are discouraged over a foolish mistake or a broken dream, we need to revive. In either case, the scrap we thought represented a wasted moment in our life will become something God can use to make us wiser, more disciplined, and more appreciative of His grace, mercy, and forgiveness--and make us more willing to extend the same to others (Ephesians 4:32).

God the Master Tailor, wants to use every moment in our life for His glory. If you will pick up the pieces and save our scraps for Him, the garment He fashions will be more beautiful than you can imagine."

See Susan? God thinks you are beautiful!! It is a spiritual beauty that can NEVER be taken away from you! And why are you spiritually beautiful? Because you said YES! to Jesus Christ! You chose to shed the sin that leads to death and obey God's Truth that leads to righteousness!!

Why anyone would not want to accept Jesus' gift of salvation is truly a mystery! Like you wrote, Susan, "it is for those who hunger for truth and righteousness. They shall be filled (Matthew 5:6)."

All we can do is continue to spread the seeds of the Gospel. God does the saving! And sharing those "scraps of life" may jolt a person away from the clutches of sin, evil and death so that they are no longer a slave (like you stated) to it!

God bless you today and always Susan! Love you!

    In Jesus,
    Christine
