Do Not Be Afraid: The Opposite of Fear

When we think of faith, we think of belief. And when we think of the opposite of belief, we naturally think of unbelief. Therefore, we conclude that the opposite of faith is unbelief. And from a dictionary perspective, that is true. But the Bible usually sets something besides unbelief in opposition to faith—and that is fear. From a grammatical point of view, the opposite of believing may be not believing. But from the perspective of life, the opposite of faith is fear.

Jesus demonstrated this clearly when a Jewish man begged Him to come and heal his sick daughter. On their way, friends of the man met them and said it was too late—the little girl had died. But Jesus said to the man, "Do not be afraid; only believe." Jesus didn't tell the man not to doubt—He told him not to fear. Faith and hope are focused on the future. Facing the future without faith and hope is a good reason to be fearful. Going forward, we have two choices: faith or fear.

Whether the future you are focused on is five minutes, five months, or five years away, "Do not be afraid; only believe."

The beginning of anxiety is the end of faith and the beginning of true faith is the end of anxiety.

Notice that the Turning Point devotional makes the claim that, "from the perspective of life, the opposite of faith is fear."


Whom or what do you believe in?  Whom or what can you trust?  It makes a HUGE difference - both in this life and in eternity.

Let me share a "secular" example.  First, I ask each of you some questions.

Do you trust the media? 

Do you think that what is being broadcast as "news" is always the absolute truth? 

Or, do you believe that the media can be controlled by a person (e.g. dictator), ideology (e.g. liberalism), or methods; including the sleight of hand manipulation of  videos, photos, sound bites, or even people?

Here are two examples I'd like to share.  The first one is a bit humorous:

Where Can We Find Peace in Situations Like This?

My day actually started out so beautifully! Early this morning, I received an email notification from WND about a video that had gone viral after three young men dazzled the audience during an "America's Got Talent" audition. They sang a worship song about Jesus; and the audience and judges all ended up giving them a standing ovation!

It was certainly a joyful moment!

Since the song was in a different language, I wondered whether or not the judges would have liked it as much if it was sung in English and the name "Jesus" was uttered? I know...it's just the skepticism in me that would say such a thing. But can you blame me?  The political correctness that abounds these days forbids any display of outward worship of Jesus Christ. Well, as for me and my house - we will WORSHIP THE LORD - no matter what society says about it!

I think that when worship songs are sung so beautifully; we get a glimpse of what it will be like in heaven!

After listening to that beautiful rendition several times, I was ready to go and tackle my job of clearing away everything off the carpets throughout the house over the next four hours before the carpet cleaners arrived!

But then, it happened...again. Another day....another shooting tragedy.

Because I was having my carpets in the house cleaned, I had nothing else to do but hang out with my two dogs in the sun room (which has a brick floor) while the men who arrived at 11:30 a.m. dry cleaned the carpets throughout the house. I watched the news all day (for the most part).  And as the day dragged on, I found myself  receiving more and more information about the killer, Aaron Alexis, who used someone else's ID to get into the Naval yard facility in Washington D.C., and then proceeded to gun down 12 civilians.

As usual, we all go through the WHYS of such a terrible event. What drove this man to do such a terrible thing? What were his motives? We could ask questions ad infinitum. However, we do know that such an act of evil cannot be easily explained until all the facts are known.

Yesterday, I heard one of the most sobering sermons ever on Turning Point Television.

Dr. David Jeremiah started a new series entitled, "What Are You Afraid Of?" The book by the same
name comes out sometime in October.

 .

Yesterday's sermon was the very first in a series of sermons on the topic. Although it didn't deal directly with such an evil act of shooting civilians, it did prepare me for what transpired today.

The topic of Sunday's sermon was Disaster: The Fear of Natural Calamity.  (*See outline below). The website informs us:

As we begin this new series on fear, unforeseen disasters recently ravaged cities across the United States—where can we find peace in situations like this? Find rest in God.

A Great Spiritual Metaphor

Moments With God on Route 66

Each day I take a little time to read from the book "Moments With God On Route 66." 

I love what is written on the back cover:

God has given us His own Route 66 that stretches from your front door to the doorway of heaven--66 books of the Bible.  And since 2007, Pastor David Jeremiah has been airing one-minute insights into God's Route 66 on radio stations across the nation.  In Moments With God on Route 66 you will find 230 of the best of the nearly 1,400 Route 66 spots aired through 2012.  Just like the Bible, there is something in these short devotionals for everyone, seekers and saints alike.

So take a short drive on God's Route 66 every day.  You'll find His divine highway will keep you focused and moving faithfully toward your heavenly home!

Today, I read one that is worthy of copying, printing out, framing, and hanging on a wall so that I will be reminded of the wisdom shared therein each and every day!  It is entitled, "Full Trot."

Full Trot

There is an Italian proverb that is a great spiritual metaphor.  It says, "He who knows the road can ride at a full trot."  When a horse and rider are on a road they've been down a hundred times, they can go at full speed.  They can ride with confidence.

But in life, we are confronted with roads we've never been down before.  And that can be intimidating.  But guess who sees every bump and pothole in every road?  God does.  That's what it means to walk by faith and not by sight--to have confidence in God and not in ourselves.

Move ahead with confidence on the road to new life.

Discover God's knowledge of the road ahead ...on Route 66.

It is amazing to me that people who have never read or studied the Bible just do not know what wisdom from God that they could discover within it's pages!  They just don't know what they are missing! As Dr. Jeremiah wrote, we can "Discover God's knowledge of the road ahead" through reading and studying the Bible!


The terms "by" and "faith" are written 65 times in the New Testament and the exact phrase, "by faith" is written in the New Testament 39 times!!

Notice that the "by faith" verses in the book of Hebrews (click on link above to view) describes many of the important events that occurred in the Old Testament!

Every single "by faith" verse is excellent, of course, because they all come from the Word of God!  Some of my personal favorites with the words "by faith" highlighted in red include:


Gal 3:24   Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

Gal 3:8   And the Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel to Abraham beforehand, saying, “In you all the nations shall be blessed.”[fn]

Gal 5:5   For we through the Spirit eagerly wait for the hope of righteousness by faith.

Phl 3:9   and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; *

Rom 5:1   Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have[fn] peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

Gal 2:16   “knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified.

Gal 2:20   “I have been crucified with Christ; it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself for me.
 
One of the most recognized verses has the action verb "walk" in front of it:

2Cr 5:7    For we walk by faith, not by sight.

At the same time, this 2 Corinthians verse informs us not to walk by sight alone.

Prophecy in the Bible has provided believers with just enough information to allow us to hold onto the faith, and walk with absolute confidence!  Jesus Christ fulfilled most of the 300+ prophecies that pointed to the coming Messiah in the Old Testament during his first coming and mission of salvation on earth.  Upon the culmination of history, Christ will fulfill the final prophecies at his second coming.

With a track record like Christ's why should anyone ever doubt that he would not fulfill all the end times prophecies?

This is exactly why we can move ahead with confidence via walking by faith on the road to new life!

*  Phl 3:7    But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ.

   Phl 3:8   Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ

   Phl 3:9    and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;

   Phl 3:10   that I may know Him and the power of His resurrection, and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death,

   Phl 3:11   if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead.

  Phl 3:12    Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me.

  Phl 3:13   Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead,

  Phl 3:14   I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.

Comparisons Between Isaac and Jesus Christ

In thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed because thou hast obeyed my voice.  Genesis 22:18

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

So much of the Old Testament points towards Jesus Christ that upon discovery of this fact, believers and non-believers alike should find it astounding!  In this post, I am going to share just one story.  However, it is a very important factual story that begins with Abraham's obedience to God.  Abraham was willing to sacrifice his son; "his only son" as it is recorded in Scripture.  It is a huge test of Abraham's faith, but also a foreshadowing of God's Son, "His only Son," -  Jesus Christ -  and His willingness to be sacrificed for our sins on the cross!

What hit me most was the comparisons shared near the end of the video message.   Pastor Jeremiah shares a list of the comparisons between Isaac and Jesus Christ.  He states that we can look back at this through our "New Testament eyes" and find the ultimate purpose of this story as it is recorded in Genesis.

1.    Both Isaac and Jesus Christ were miraculously born.  [Recall that Abraham was over 100 years old and Sarah his wife in her 90's!]

2.    Both Isaac and Christ brought joy to their Father.

3.    Both Isaac and Christ were born at a set time.

4.    Both Isaac and Christ were persecuted by their brothers.  [Ishmael who was born of the maidservant Hagar, and Christ's half brothers...like James (who later became a believer after Christ's resurrection from the dead)  who later wrote the book of James in the NT.]

5.    Both Isaac and Christ were obedient unto death.

6.    Two young men went with Isaac; Christ was crucified between two thieves.

7.    Isaac carried the wood, Christ carried the cross.

8.    Isaac questioned his father [by asking where is the sacrificial ram?] and Christ said, "My God, my God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"

9.    Christ was obedient unto death; Isaac was raised from death in a figure.  [This means that a sacrificial ram was caught in the thicket to take Isaac's place for the sacrifice.]

10.   Abraham returns but Isaac is not heard from (in the Bible) until he is introduced to his bride; and that is exactly the way it is with the Lord Jesus Christ himself!  The Bible tells us that Christ will return for His Bride (all believers) and the dead shall rise first, then all who are alive in Christ shall
meet the Lord in the air.

We can ask, are these all just a bunch of coincidences? 

Answer:  No! 

Every story of the Old Testament is somehow related to THE story of the New Testament - that being the gospel of Jesus Christ!

This is the greatest picture of the love of the Father that you will ever find in the Bible! 

One last point.  Romans 8:32 tells us of one difference between father Abraham and Father God.


Rom 8:32

He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things?


Almighty God allowed Abraham to spare his son from death.  But God the Father loved us SO MUCH that he would not spare His own Son, Jesus, from taking the penalty for all of humanity's sins.  Father God delivered Him up to save us from our sins, and raised him up via the Resurrection to life in order for us to be reconciled back unto God.  If Jesus didn't do this, he would have re-entered heaven alone.

The wages of sin is death and the wages have to be paid.  If we tried to pay those wages, we could never be with God.  And so God sent His Son, Jesus Christ into this world.  And the story of Isaac is very much like it until you get to the very end. 

That's how much God loves you.  That's how much God loves me.  For even His own Son was not too high a price to pay that you and I might be saved from our sins, be forgiven, and go to heaven.

Words To Heed Today

Pro 3:21 My son, do not let wisdom and understanding out of your sight, preserve sound judgment and discretion;

Pro 3:22 they will be life for you, an ornament to grace your neck.

Within this current world of chaos, there is much confusion going on in the minds of individuals, groups, media, Hollywood, public schools, colleges, universities; and especially within government.

Some of the confusion is deliberate.  See my former post.   But then, there are people who are totally ignorant of what is going on behind the scenes.  There are those who approve of the evil and chaos, simply because they crave money, power, influence, prestige, re-election; and in some cases, they blatantly and obviously enjoy causing harm to the masses.  But those who can't see or hear the evil  (or cover their eyes and ears purposely so they don't have to deal with it) keep living their lives unredeemed as the cesspool swirls all around them - which is all to their detriment in the end.

There was a popular song back in the 70's (I think) where the lyrics described life as a "ball of confusion."  When I looked back at the lyrics, I was surprised to see that the Temptations were against gun control! 

Many of the lyrics can be applied more today than even back in the 70's!

And it seems,
Nobody is interested in learnin'
But the teacher
Segregation, determination, demonstration,
Integration, aggravation,
Humiliation, obligation to our nation
Ball of Confusion
That's what the world is today

The sale of pills are at an all time high
Young folks walk around with
Their heads in the sky
Cities aflame in the summer time
And, the beat goes on

Air pollution, revolution, gun control,
Sound of soul
Shootin' rockets to the moon
Kids growin' up too soon
Politicians say more taxes will
Solve everything
And the band played on
So round 'n' round 'n' round we go
Where the world's headed, nobody knows
Just a Ball of Confusion
Oh yea, that's what the wold is today

Fear in the air, tension everywhere
Unemployment rising fast,

It is interesting to note that the Temptations knew where true love is shared.  They don't necessarily mention the Bible, but they did write:

Vote for me, and I'll set you free
Rap on brother, rap on
Well, the only person talkin'
'Bout love thy brother is the preacher

In Dr. David Jeremiah's book called Moments With God On Route 66, he discusses avoiding roadblocks in life and knowing the way - the true way according to God's Word.


Confusion

Modern life can be confusing. There are many things that used to be called "evil" that are now called "good." And many things that used to be called "good" are now called "evil"---or at the very least, they are called "narrow-minded," "intolerant," "prejudiced," or "old fashioned."

But such confusion is not new. God once warned the Israelites, through the prophet Isaiah, about the same thing. "Woe to those, " God said, "who call evil good and good evil; who put darkness for light, and light for darkness; who put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter" (Isaiah 5:20). Ancient words that we should heed today.

Pray for discernment on the road to new life.

God's Route 66

Many years ago, I was a teacher at an elementary school back east.  For about 2 1/2 years, I taught physical education, health and safety for grades K-5.  Part of the safety curriculum included a Disney created cartoon series starring the little character of Jiminy Cricket who would begin each safety message singing:

"Oh...I'm no fool, no sirree, I want to live to be 93!  I play safe for you and me 'cause I'm no fool."

Of course, those films dealt with physical and mental safety; and how not being foolish with our every day activities can help us avoid injury or even death.  But there is also a need within our souls to realize that avoidance of moral, emotional and spiritual foolishness is equally, if not even more important!

I thought of these films today while reading a little book called "Moments With God On Route 66" by Dr. David Jeremiah.

On the page discussing the virtues of  "counsel," Dr. Jeremiah writes:

"We hear the words "fool" and "foolish" often enough that it is easy to lose sight of their true meaning."

But before I continue with the message, I wanted to explain what this particular book is all about.

On the back cover, we find out:

There are not many people left who can say, "I got my kicks on Route 66!"  But between 1926 and 1984, U. S. Highway (Route) 66 was America's "Mother Road" --2,448 miles of asphalt stretching from Chicago to Los Angeles.  The sections of Route 66 that are left today are unmarked, known only to the locals.  But for decades many Americans dreamed about motoring west on Route 66.  And if they couldn't make the drive, they did it vicariously through the Route 66 hit TV show that aired from 1960-1964.

I was young when that show aired, so I don't remember much about it.   But I do recall hearing that it was a very popular series at the time for young adults.  If you are interested in learning more, read a recent article at AV Club: Why the mostly forgotten Route 66 was one of TV’s most ambitious shows. The article includes a few film clips too.

One sentence from the article intrigued me and I'd like to view the episode:

The series even featured future stars in smaller parts, as when Ed Asner played a young Jewish boy’s father, who later died and kicked off a crisis of faith in the boy.

Getting back to the subject of counsel.

There are many Bible verses discussing and warning about "the way of the fool."   We would be wise to heed such warnings.

Dr. Jeremiah continues:

A verse in the Book of Proverbs makes it clear: "The way of a fool is right in his own eyes." In other words, a fool is a person who refuses to heed the moral advice of those who are wiser. A fool does what he wants in spite of the pain it causes him and others.

From the Bible's perspective, the fool is a person who refuses to listen to God's counsel or warnings. But the wise person is the one who submits his reasoning to God.

Accept direction on the road to new life.

Live By Faith or Human Reasoning?

Today's message on Turning Point Television is one that is desperately needed for this time in history.  Too many people don't know what it means to be "an ordinary person with extraordinary faith."   Many people don't know Jesus Christ and haven't studied the Bible.  They live by human reasoning alone and thus make the mistake of continuing to live in the prison of sin and not being reconciled back unto God for all eternity.

 Dr. David Jeremiah discusses the critical point of  the knowledge of good vs. evil.  In the story of Cain and Abel, one chose faith while the other did not.

Genuine Hope

It is interesting to note that The Handbook of Bible Application [abbreviated below as "HBA"] uses the terms "anticipation," "confidence," and "faith" as synonyms for the term "hope."

BHO ran his 2008 political campaign utilizing the terms "hope" and "change." For many voters (the ones who rejected BHO's first term and subsequently, his second term),  the promises of that campaign ended up turning out to be more like hopelessness and chains of restrictions designed to destroy our beloved Constitutional Republic.

How should we respond to feelings of hopelessness?

There is no one in Scripture better than Job to study when it comes to depression, desperation, and discouragement. [Note:  If unfamiliar with the book of Job, read Job 1:1-22].

Job 1:20 Then Job arose, tore his robe, and shaved his head; and he fell to the ground and worshiped.

Job 1:21 And he said: "Naked I came from my mother's womb, And naked shall I return there. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; Blessed be the name of the LORD."

Job 1:22 In all this Job did not sin nor charge God with wrong.

Excerpt from HBA:

Remember that we live in a fallen world.   As we see calamity and suffering in the book of Job, we must remember that we live in a fallen world where good behavior is not always rewarded and bad behavior is not always punished.  When we see a notorious criminal prospering or an innocent child in pain, we say, "That's wrong,."  And it is.  Sin has twisted justice and made our world unpredictable and ugly.

Remember that God is sovereign.  The book of Job shows a good man suffering for no apparent fault of his own.  Sadly, our world is like that.  But Job's story does not end in despair.  Through Job's life we can see that faith in God is justified even when our situations look hopeless.  Faith based on rewards or prosperity is hollow.  To be unshakable, faith must be built on the confidence that God's ultimate purpose will come to pass. (1)
 

Also read Psalm 69:1-36  and realize that hopelessness is an opportunity to trust God.

Read Isaiah 22:1-25 which will help you to keep God's promises in mind.

What are the sources of a believer's hope?

BIBLE READING:  Leviticus 26:1-46

KEY BIBLE VERSE:  Despite all this, I will not utterly reject or despise them while they are in exile in the land of their enemies.  I will not cancel my covenant with them by wiping them out, I, the LORD, am their God. (Leviticus 26:44)

A Christian's hope is based on God's faithfulness.  These verse show what God meant when he said he is slow to anger (Exodus 34:6).  Even if the Israelites chose to disobey and were scattered among their enemies, God would still give them the opportunity to repent and return to him.  His purpose was not to destroy them, but to help them grow.  Our day-to-day experiences and hardships are sometimes overwhelming; unless we can see that God's purpose is to bring about continual growth in us, we may despair.  The hope we need is well expressed in Jeremiah 29:11-12:  " 'For I know the plans I have for you,' says the Lord.  "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.  In those days when you pray, I will listen,'"  Retaining a future and a hope.  In those days when you pray, I will listen.' "  Retaining hope while we suffer shows we understand God's merciful ways of relating to his people. (2)

BIBLE READING:  Mark 5:21-43

KEY BIBLE VERSE:  Jesus ignored their comments and said to Jairus, "Don't be afreaid.  Just trust me."  (Mark 5:36)

Hope comes from trusting Christ.   Jairus's crisis made him feel confused, afraid, and without hope.  Jesus' words to Jairus in the midst of crisis speak to us as well:  "Don't be afraid.  Just trust me."  In Jesus' mind, there was both hope and promise.  The next time you feel hopeless and afraid, look at your problem from Jesus' point of view.  He is the source of all hope and promise.
 

When a mere mortal person (especially politicians!) claim to be "the source of all hope and promise," we know that they are lying! 

It was very refreshing to recently hear Senator Marco Rubio state that despite the fact that Time magazine put him on their cover and labeled him as "the savior of the Republican Party," he rejected that title and stressed that there is only ONE SAVIOR - JESUS CHRIST.

BIBLE READING:  Romans 5:1-11

KEY BIBLE VERSE:  Since we have been made right in God's sight by faith, we have peace with God because of what Jesus Christ our Lord has done for us.  Because of our faith, Christ has brought us into this place of highest privilege where we now stand, and we confidently and joyfully look forward to sharing God's glory.  (Romans 5:1-2) (3)

Is that one of the greatest verses you have ever read??  It is for me!!  I often write about how grateful we should be because of Christ's promises in Scripture.  The Romans verse expresses THE greatest of them all.

Hope comes from remembering all that God has done for us.   As Paul states clearly in 1 Corinthians 13:13, faith , hope, and love are at the heart of the Christian life.   Our relationship with God begins with faith, which helps us realize that we are delivered from our past by Christ's death.  Hope grows as we learn all that God has in mind for us; it gives us the promise of the future.  And God's love fills our life and gives us the ability to reach out to others. (4)

Witnessing to unbelievers is more challenging today than in the past.  Why?  Because there are more people who have never read or studied the Bible and they have no idea about the truth it contains!  Plus, many can be swept away by false religions, cults, and even the occult.  People celebrating Satan these days don't even think it's wrong!    The next paragraph will help you through:

Hope grows as we depend on God in the difficult times.  For first century Christians, suffering was the rule rather than the exception.  Paul tells us that in the future we will become, but until then we must overcome.  This means we will experience difficulties that help us grow.  We rejoice in suffering not because we like pain or deny its tragedy, but because we know God is using life's difficulties and Satan's attacks to build our character.  The problems that we run into will develop our perseverance--which in turn will strengthen our character, deepen our trust in God, and give us greater confidence about the future.  You probably find your patience tested in some way every day.  Thank God for those opportunities to grow, and deal with them in his strength (see also James 1:2-4; 1 Peter 1:6-7). (5)

The joy of celebrating God's mercy, grace, and love through the Person of His Son, Jesus Christ, never, ever gets old!  The eternal promises that have been given to His children are just that...eternal!
Once a believer has given his old life over to Christ, his new life begins immediately and as Scripture tells us, "no one can snatch him out of His hands."

There is NOTHING on this earth that can satisfy that deep desire to know and fellowship with Jesus Christ.  There is a reason for this.  God has placed eternity into our hearts.  There will always be a hole there, in the spot where Jesus Christ needs to indwell each and every one of us in the form of the Holy Spirit.   Until that moment of surrender we cannot turn the "hole in the heart"  into being made whole again spiritually through Christ!

BIBLE READING:  1 Thessalonians 4:13-18
KEY BIBLE VERSE:  Brothers and sisters, I want you to know what will happen to the Christians who have died so you will not be full of sorrow like people who have no hope. (1 Thessalonians 4:13)

Hope grows as we remember the promise of the Resurrection.  Because Jesus Christ came back to life, so will all believers.  All Christians, including those living when Christ returns, will live with Christ forever.  Therefore, we need not despair when loved ones die or world events take a tragic turn.  God will turn our tragedies to triumphs, our poverty to riches, our pain to glory, and our defeat to victory.  All believers throughout history will stand reunited in God's very presence, safe and secure.  As Paul comforted the Thessalonians with the promise of the Resurrection, so we should comfort and reassure each other with this great hope. (6)

As believers in Christ, we have confidence, faith, and trust in the God of the universe!  What could possibly compare to that?

Is Christianity Just a Philosophy, a Religion, or a Faith?

Before we delve into answering that question, I would like to share this weekend's Turning Point devotional message:

Each of the titles in Isaiah 9:6 describes a different attribute of the Lord Jesus. He came as a Child and identified Himself as a Son. He wonderfully counsels us, is the Father of our Faith, brings peace to our lives, and is God Himself.

Let's focus on His counseling ministry. In the Gospels, distressed parents came to Jesus for help. The sick and diseased sought Him out. Wealthy men like Nicodemus and the Rich Young Ruler asked His advice; and the poor heard Him gladly. He counseled both men and women, both young and old. He guided His disciples through emotional problems, and even gave life-changing counsel to the repentant thief on the cross.

Today He still counsels us through His Word and by His Spirit. When you don’t know what to do or need a corrective or encouraging word, open your Bible. He's still the Wonderful Counselor. As hymnist John Morison wrote in 1781: "His Name shall be the Prince of Peace, forevermore adored, the Wonderful, the Counselor, the great and mighty Lord."

Recently, Bill O'Reilly had a debate on his show, The O'Reilly Factor, with a self-described atheist. The usual back-and-forth arguments occurred;  about Christmas displays of the Nativity, calling decorated trees "Christmas trees," and the erroneous claims of  "separation of church and state." However, O'Reilly tried to claim that "Christianity is a philosophy." Well, that is partly true and may be what some focus on entirely.   The definition for the term "philosophy" includes:

1. the rational investigation of the truths and principles of being, knowledge, or conduct.

3. a system of philosophical doctrine

5. a system of principles for guidance in practical affairs.
 

Those definitions can be applied towards Christianity.  However, there is more to it than just being a philosophy.

There are people who may or may not adhere to Christianity (in general) and choose to focus on everything secular about Christmas (in particular), while ignoring the truth involved in the religion and the true Reason for the season - Jesus Christ.

Most Bible-believing born-again Christians consider their own Christian faith as a personal relationship with Christ.   We would most likely apply the word origin and history definition of the term "philosophy" because of its accuracy in describing what we gain from studying the Bible:

It was interesting to see the atheist on O'Reilly's show become all upset about the "Christianity is a philosophy" argument that Bill opined during the debate.   The atheist wanted Bill to admit that Christianity is a religion. O'Reilly stated that a "Methodist" is a religion, and if someone was trying to promote only the Methodist religion at Christmastime, he would be on the atheist's side.

What???

Sounds confusing, doesn't it?

Well, O'Reilly put up a bit of a smokescreen during the argument; perhaps in an effort to try and win the debate. People often do such things. However, I watched the interview two times (it was repeated yesterday while Laura Ingraham was subbing) and did not hear the term "faith" discussed.   For some reason, Bill left that out; probably because it would have forced him to admit that Christianity is a religion.

 O'Reilly stated that Jesus "was a man" when the atheist (who figuratively was turning blue in the face with frustration) continued to argue that Christianity is a religion.

 Of course it is!

There are self-described "Christian religionists" who have their own kind of twisted beliefs that don't match up to what the Bible teaches.  That is a huge mistake!  Jesus informs us that the Father's "Word is Truth" and he asks the Father to "sanctify them by Your truth."

Jhn 17:17

"Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.

Jesus asks each of us, "Who do you say that I am?"

Mat 16:15

He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?"

How one answers that question reveals just what kind of faith one has and whether or not one has a personal, soul-saving relationship with the one true God and only Savior, Lord, and King of the universe.

God Loves You and Wants You With Him Forever

This day we honor all of our Veterans, both those living and those who have passed on in their duty to help keep America safe, as a land of liberty, freedom, and justice for all. We must realize,  recognize, honor and give thanks to all of these heroes for all of  their sacrifices for our sakes.  When we remember and reflect upon all that has been done by our brave military men and women; it is only then that we know,  in our hearts, minds, and souls,  that they have dedicated their lives and sacred honor in order for ordinary citizens, like me and you,  to enjoy the freedoms of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness here in the United States of America.  Let us thank them, in every way possible, for their service!

Today also happens to be Sunday - the Lord Jesus Christ's day - where we attend services all around the nation (and around the world) to honor our Savior, Lord and King.  One day, believers will be with Jesus.  We will also be with all the loved ones in Christ who have already passed on into eternity.

After the disappointment that many family members, friends, and fellow Christians felt about the election on Tuesday, it is good to take our thoughts away from this temporal earth and see what God has in store for us In The Father's House.  Jesus told us that "in my Father's house, there are many mansions."

"In My Father's house are many mansions; if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.

Dr. Jeremiah does a brilliant job of providing many Scriptures that whet our appetites for heaven!  There is a very good reason why we can never be completely satisfied here with life on earth.  And the biggest reason is because God has placed eternity upon our hearts.  We yearn and long for something else - other than what we experience in this world.  Knowing this makes the disappointment of the election absolutely pale in comparison.  At a time when many are grieving over the horrid direction our country is moving, it is so good to know that no matter what happens in politics, it is only temporary.  We grieve, but not as those who have no hope.

Rom 8:38

For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come,

Rom 8:39

nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

What's more, even though it is normal and natural to grieve deeply for those loved ones who have passed on, the hope of Jesus Christ gives us an eternal perspective which the secular world cannot.

The Two Eternal Destinations of Mankind

Over the years, I have developed a habit of reading my favorite Christian books several times. Usually, it's a book that can give fresh insight each time it is read.    Dr. David Jeremiah's "Revealing the Mysteries of Heaven" is the kind of Bible study booklet that teaches the reader more wisdom and knowledge each and every time it is read!

Recently, I was reading a section of the book entitled "Two Principles." Learning about heaven through Scripture can seem like a complex task. But Dr. Jeremiah makes it easy to understand. He backs up facts with Bible verses, and admits when he ventures into suppositions; even when they are based on certain verses.   We will never know it all on this side of heaven, but God has revealed what we need to know in His Word!  In fact, the Bible says that those who read the words of the book of Revelation will be blessed!  Why ignore this important book?

I know.  Many people think that it is just to difficult to discern what was written in that apocalyptic book.  However, if we take the time to research and study, it becomes easier to understand.

The two principles that Dr. Jeremiah discusses in the "Heaven" booklet are located on pages 24 - 26. They include "The Priority of the Presence of Jesus" (in heaven) and The Permanence of Personal Decisions" (regarding salvation through Christ).

When I read the subtitle called "The Priority of the Presence of Jesus," I was reminded of a Bible study course that I took back in June, 2001.   The study was based on a book by Anne Graham Lotz (Billy Graham's daughter) called "The Vision of His Glory:  Finding Hope Through the Revelation of Jesus Christ."

I picked up my study guide today and re-read what I had written back then in the lesson workbook.  What I liked about the study is the fact that Anne concentrated on "the priority of the presence of Jesus" in the book of Revelation.  It was not the typical "end times" kind of study.  It was geared more towards knowing Jesus Christ through the written words of John the Apostle in the book of Revelation, as well as additional Scripture that backs up what is written about Christ in the last book of the Bible.

Before sharing the "Two Principles" from Dr. Jeremiah's booklet, I have to share a bit about the lesson that follows it. Lesson 3 is entitled, "Won't Heaven Be Boring?" The outline section tells us:

Some people suggest that heaven is going to be dull, sitting around strumming on harps all day -- forever! Nothing could be farther from the truth. Heaven is the place where every ultimate longing of the human heart and spirit is satisfied, something we've never experienced on earth.

Recall that Jesus told his disciples (just before his ascension into heaven) that he is going to prepare a place for you [us]. This is for the purpose of us being where He is for eternity! You see, heaven isn't just a beautiful place to live forever. It is heaven,  precisely because of the presence of Jesus Christ! The outline section also tells us:

Heaven will not be boring because:

1. God is not boring.

2. You will not be boring.

3. Your friends will not be boring.

4. You work will not be boring.

5. It is the place you've always longed for.

What is ironic (in the booklet) is what appears on the left sided page of the previous chapter.  It is the end of the chapter that discusses "Where Are They Now" - meaning, where are the dead in Christ.  But at the end of the chapter, the last study question appears at the top of the page:

5.  What level of confidence do you have about your eternal destiny?

Interesting question!  It is one that each of us needs to answer at some point during this lifetime.  It matters how each individual answers Jesus' most important question, "Who do you say that I am?"


Next, on the same page there is a "did you know" section that ends the chapter study question page.

Did You Know?

The most consistent Greek word translated "hell" in the New Testament is geenna, rendered Gehennah in English.  Greek geenna derives from Hebrew ge ben Hinnom--valley of the son of Hinnom, mentioned 10 times in the Old Testament (for example, Joshua 15:8).  It was a valley south and southwest of Jerusalem where Israelites participated in pagan idol worship and child sacrifice (Jeremiah 32:30-35).  Jeremiah prophesied it would become a place of God's judgment (Jeremiah 7:30-32; 19:2, 6).  By the first century A.D. it had become a smoldering trash heap where refuse, even dead bodies of criminals, were thrown to burn.  Jesus used it frequently as an appropriate image of God's final judgment--"hell...the fire that shall never be quenched"  (Mark 9:43).

Helluva way to end a chapter, isn't it? Let's go back a few pages to briefly examine the two principles Dr. Jeremiah mentions in his study booklet.

The Priority of the Presence of Jesus

We can get specific and detailed about the technicalities of heaven, but it boils down to this: Heaven is where Jesus is. The most important thing about heaven is that it's where Jesus Christ is and where He has promised to take us (john 14:1-4). When Jesus spoke to the thief on the cross He said, "Today you will be with Me..." (Luke 23:43). [Christine adds: "in paradise."]  Paul said that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:8). When Paul wrote to the Philippians, he didn't say he was hard-pressed between wanting to be with the Philippians or going to heaven. He said he was hard-pressed between being with the Philippians and being with Christ (Philippians 1:23-24). The priority is not being in heaven, it's being with Christ. Wherever heaven is, as long as Christ is there, we'll be fine. It wasn't heaven that saved us, it was Jesus. It wasn't heaven that is coming again for us, it's Jesus. So the priority is being with Him. The best summary statement of all is Paul's when he wrote to the Thessalonians: "And thus we shall always be with the Lord" (1 Thessalonians 4:17). It's fine to know that what, why, when, where, and how --but most important is to know the "who," Jesus himself.

Richard Baxter said it this way:

"My knowledge of that life is small,

The eye of faith is dim'

But it's enough that Christ knows all,

And I shall be with Him"3

We live in a world where celebrities, athletes, musicians, singers, actors, and even politicians are revered.   At times, many are even "worshipped" by their fans.  This is always a huge mistake.  There is only One person who ever walked the earth that deserves our worship - Jesus Christ.

But the mesmerized, wide-eyed young girl who dreams of meeting (or even marrying?) a handsome celebrity actor and gets her most fervent desire suddenly sees how much more important it is for her daughter to be brought up in the Christian faith rather than in a cult like Scientology.  God bless her for coming to her senses before it was too late!

We are to love others, but never worship them.  Worship is an act that completely belongs to God.  Period.  However, if you look closely at your own life and the lives of others, you will notice that those who choose not to worship the true God of the Bible will worship someone, or something else.  As the Christian song goes, "every body's worshiping something...I choose You." [meaning, Jesus Christ.]

This leads us right into Dr. Jeremiah's second principle.

The Permanence of Personal Decisions (Luke 16:26)

In Jesus' story of Lazarus and the rich man, Abraham described a "great gulf fixed" between hades and paradise, "so that those who want to pass from here to you cannot, nor can those from there pass to us"  (Luke 16:26).  The gulf is fixed and is therefore permanent between heaven and hell.

The decision we make about eternity will be made in this life, and there will be no crossing from one side to the other after death.  There is no such place as purgatory where we can earn our way into heaven.  The Bible says, "And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this the judgment"  (Hebrews 9:27).  The only thing that follows death is judgment.  there is no state in which transactions are made allowing one to change his eternal destination.  Whatever decisions are made about eternity will be made in this life.  Paul wrote, "Behold, no is the day of salvation" (2 Corinthians 6:2).

[T]he prospect of spending eternity with Christ in heaven is powerful, but it requires a decision on your part.  I hope you make the same decision that I did--that your eternity is secure with Christ in heaven.

The Great Evacuation

Dr. Jeremiah presents "The Great Evacuation" sermon which was taped at a rally in Alabama.  For those Christians who may not understand the difference between The Rapture and The Second Coming of Christ, this is an excellent study that uses lots of Scripture to describe the difference between the two and when each will happen as we head towards the culmination of history.

On this Memorial Day weekend, we all need to spend time and reflect; remembering all of those brave military men and women who sacrificed their own lives throughout the history of our nation for the security of our country, the liberation of those who have been oppressed in other lands, and for the liberty and freedoms we enjoy here in the United States of America.

The crosses in the cemeteries where our fallen soldiers have been laid to rest remind us of all of those who died in relationship with Jesus Christ our Lord.
There is a noticeable difference between those who "die in the Lord" and those who die without knowing Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.  Everyone grieves when a loved one dies.  Jesus himself wept at the death of Lazarus; despite the fact that he was able to raise him back from the dead!  But Lazarus later died physically, again,  probably of old age.   Knowing our eternal destiny allows us to not "sorrow as others who have no hope" [See 1 Thessalonians 4:13]. 

 Everyone dies (unless you are a Christian who is alive at the time of the Rapture - for then you will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air!) and our destiny is determined according to what a person does regarding answering Jesus' question,  "Who do you say that I am?"
When a loved one dies in Christ, he/she is not lost.  All Christians will be reunited one day at the Rapture.  We will recognize each other and enter into heaven together with Jesus.  What a glorious day THAT will be!!


1Th 4:13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.

1Th 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus. [fn]

1Th 4:15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive [and] remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.

  1Th 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.

1Th 4:17 Then we who are alive [and] remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord. 

1Th 4:18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.
