Maher Is Ignorant and a Coward

Last evening, I fell asleep on the couch. It was way to early! Must have been around 8:30 p.m. because when I awoke, it was around 11:30 p.m.! Darn! Missed Monk again!

While surfing through the upper channels, I ran across Bill Maher's show. Now, I don't usually make a habit of watching it but the few times that I have paused to listen to him, he is ALWAYS bashing President Bush and usually has terrible things to say about Christians. Well, last night was certainly a doozie! Maher made some really bizarre statements.

Near the very end of the show, just after Maher forced his guests to agree with him that "Bush is the worst president we have ever had," he then proceeded to go on a crazy rant about God and Christian sacred beliefs.

The discussion was about the UFO's that were recently spotted and filmed. The video made all the news shows. Maher and his guests were discussing what the various explanations could be. The conversation included the idea that it may be a new, secret technology that was being tested all the way to the usual "it's aliens" claim.

When confronted with the alien idea, Maher went into a rant about God.

This is a paraphrased portion of that rant:

Maher:
I find that more believable (re: aliens) than what religious people believe about the God of the universe, coming down, having sex with a Palestinian girl, and having a Son.

One guest added, "Yeah...and she was 16...underaged."

Hmmm...I think that Maher should re-name his show "Real IGNORANCE" with Bill Maher!

Since I don't regularly watch his show, I do not know whether or not he has ever been brave enough to be critical and mocking of Islam the way he is obviously critical, and mocking, of Christianity. Bashing Islam would take some real courage!

But Christianity? That's an easy target. No fear there (at least not in this world).

According to Wikipedia, Maher's beliefs include:

He is also not shy about his apatheist beliefs and frequently asserts his belief that all forms of religious belief are detrimental to society.

One day, Maher will face that Judge of the Universe and if he never repents, what a terrible day it will be for him!

Rev 20:11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.

Rev 20:12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,[fn3] and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

Rev 20:13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

Rev 20:14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.[fn4]

Rev 20:15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

20:12 NU-Text and M-Text read the throne.
20:14 NU-Text and M-Text add the lake of fire.

Whew! Wouldn't want to be Maher!

So...Maher gets away...unscathed (at least in this world) for his anti-God beliefs. So be it. It's easy. It makes his show a hit. It makes him money.

Contrast this with what a true political critic of another religion...namely...Islam, goes through. I saw a portion of the interview with Ayaan Hirsi Ali, author of the book "Infidel," on The O'Reilly Factor last evening.

Excerpts of one review at above link:

The break began when she slipped away from her family on her way to a forced marriage in Canada and talked her way into political asylum in Holland, using a story she herself calls "an invention." Soon after arriving, she removed her head scarf to see if God would strike her dead. He did not. Nor were there divine consequences when, defying her ancestors, she donned blue jeans, rode a bicycle, enrolled in university, became a Dutch citizen, began to speak publicly about the mistreatment of Muslim women in Holland and won election to the Dutch parliament.

But tragedy followed fame. In 2004, Hirsi Ali helped a Dutch director, Theo van Gogh, make a controversial film, "Submission," about Muslim women suffering from forced marriages and wife beating. Van Gogh was murdered by an angry Muslim radical in response, and Hirsi Ali went into hiding. The press began to explore her past, discovering the "inventions" that she had used to get her refugee status. The Dutch threatened to revoke her citizenship; the American Enterprise Institute offered her a job in Washington. And thus she came to be among us.

She also describes how horrified she felt as an adult after Sept. 11, 2001, reaching for the Koran to find out whether some of Osama bin Laden's more blood-curdling statements -- "when you meet the unbelievers, strike them in the neck" -- were direct quotations. "I hated to do it," she wrote, "because I knew that I would find bin Laden's quotations in there." And there were consequences: "The little shutter at the back of my mind, where I pushed all my dissonant thoughts, snapped open after the 9/11 attacks, and it refused to close again. I found myself thinking that the Quran is not a holy document. It is a historical record, written by humans. . . . And it is a very tribal and Arab version of events. It spreads a culture that is brutal, bigoted, fixated on controlling women, and harsh in war."

That moment led Hirsi Ali to her most profound conclusion: that the mistreatment of women is not an incidental problem in the Muslim world, a side issue that can be dealt with once the more important political problems are out of the way. Rather, she believes that the enslavement of women lies at the heart of all of the most fanatical interpretations of Islam, creating "a culture that generates more backwardness with every generation."

Bill Maher is such a coward!! There he sits, night after night spewing hateful rhetoric about a religion he knows nothing about. He is safe. He is comfortable. He is protected...precisely because the administration of George W. Bush - the guy he loves to hate - has put in place protections that allow Maher the safety, security, and free speech rights to blaspheme the God of the Bible in front of millions via his T.V. show.

The soldiers fighting in the wars against Islamofascist terrorism are giving their lives so that Maher can be free, safe, comfortable, wealthy, vocal, visible on T.V. and given the opportunity for freedom of speech to a wide audience.

Yet, this woman who has stood up so bravely and courageously has the need for body guards protecting her due to death threats leveled at her because of the truth that she is revealing about Radical Islam.

Go to the link and read all of the details. Here's one more excerpt:

Ultimately, it led to her most controversial conclusion too: that Islam is in a period of transition, that the religion as it is currently practiced is often incompatible with modernity and democracy and must radically transform itself in order to become so. "We in the West," she writes, "would be wrong to prolong the pain of that transition unnecessarily, by elevating cultures full of bigotry and hatred toward women to the stature of respectable alternative ways of life." That sentiment, when first expressed in Holland, infuriated not only Hirsi Ali's compatriots but also Dutch intellectuals uneasy about criticizing the immigrants in their midst, particularly because both Hirsi Ali and Theo van Gogh went further than the usual criticism of radical, political Islam: Both believed that even "ordinary" forms of Islam, such as those practiced in Hirsi Ali's Somalia, contain elements of discrimination against women that should not be tolerated in the West. Thanks to this belief in female equality, Hirsi Ali now requires permanent bodyguards.

Greater Love Hath No Man

Have you ever seen that commercial where actress Lynn Redgrave states that she "doesn't want to die from breast cancer...I want to die from something else?"

That commercial has always bothered me.

Don't get me wrong. I realize the point that she is trying to make. However, IMO, I thought that her method of conveying her point was just...well...kinda stupid.

Maybe if she stated that she'd rather "die from old age," then, the point she was trying to make would have made more sense.

When celebrities take a platform on political issues, that bothers me too.

Why?

Just because they have such a wide audience that tend to be easily influenced by them.

Why?

Just because they are well liked celebrities, perhaps.

If such celebrities are influencing people to vote for certain candidates that I personally think will damage our country; that is when my worry meter is raised.

For instance, let's look briefly at Oprah's support for Obama. It was only a 30 second video clip released on Fox News yesterday, but it showed a side of Oprah that most of her fans probably wouldn't recognize.

On her television talk show, Oprah comes across as very loving, tolerant, inoffensive, helpful, kind, considerate and giving-to-others type of person. I firmly believe that it is that particular image which has endeared many, if not all, of her fans towards her.

But if we look at the total picture, we find that she holds a very different, much more partisan mindset. The Fox News channel brief film clip of her at the microphone "stumping" for Obama on the campaign trail showed the harsh, partisan side of her....big time!

The first thing that I noticed in that clip was how angry she appeared. Of course, this was the opportune time for her to speak out harshly against the war in Iraq. But I was a bit taken aback by her harsh and angry demeanor. I immediately thought Oprah has morphed into Maxine Waters!!

If you saw the film clip, what did you think?

There are over a million blogposts and articles that one could read regarding the Oprah/Obama connection. The four main ones are that they both share the same race, the same radical church connection, the same worldview, and the same hatred of Bush and the Iraq war.

Today I received an email link to a great article. It is called A Medicine Worse Than the Sickness. Interesting read.

I encourage you to read the entire article. In a way, it ties in Redgrave's commercial rhetoric with the usual rhetoric of those who oppose the Iraq war.

Why?

Because, quite obviously, people tend to die in wars.

In fact, you really do need to read the paragraphs that precede the following excerpt:

I am also writing from the perspective of a Christian. As I survey the landscape today I believe we can see that the sort of attitude that Sayers decried back in World War 2 is still alive and well with us today. When I hear calls like “Support the Troops- Bring them Home,” I recognize that the speaker believes that the very worst thing that can happen in life is to die. We must ask ourselves how many tyrants are in power today, stifling their populace by whatever means that they have, because free men and women can’t bring themselves to assert their understanding of what is right and what is wrong for fear that war might break out.

That is the story of Rwanda in the 90s. It is today’s story in Sudan. This article is not about trying to lay out arguments for war but rather to expound on the principle at work in Sayer’s statement. That principle is: In the face of evils that will always be with us, we shouldn't try to avoid them, stall them, or overcome them in such a way that is also evil or sets the stage for something more horrific.

I can think of other applications of this principle and when we are in a political season I think it is wise to consider the matter, especially those of us who are Christians.

Back to Redgrave's commercial.

Earlier in this post, I said that her statement, "I want to die from something else" was stupid.

Perhaps I was wrong.

When I thought it over, I realized that people often choose careers that put them in harms way. The purpose, of course, is not because they wish to die an early death. The reason they do so is to serve their fellow man and country.

Such a list could include thousands of different kinds of jobs...all the way from body guards, construction workers, policemen, firemen, border patrolmen, national guardsmen, etc. up to , and including, our brave military men and women in uniform who actively, and willingly, place their lives on the line each and every day for their beloved nation.

We can't possibly thank them enough!

However, civilian patriots are actively showing their utmost gratitude to our troops in many ways; especially during the Christmas season of celebration.

When I think of those who have died serving our country, I am reminded of what Jesus said.

Jhn 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Of course, the act of Jesus laying down His Own Life for His friends is incomparable to any other act of human sacrifice. Jesus' death for our sakes is the most important event in human history. His resurrection to life everlasting demonstrates that this world is not all that there is.

As far as war is concerned, losing one's life in such necessary battles is not a "wasted" life, as some war dissenters have foolishly stated and claim. The Christian men and women who have chosen to do such a sacrificial act of service will be greeted by our Lord with, "well done, good and faithful servant."

Unfortunately, such a sentiment is lost on those who perceive this life as "all that there is." But God's Word tells us differently:

1Jo 3:16
Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.

The assurance of Eternal Life is mentioned 30 times in Scripture. Jesus Himself often spoke these very words.

Back to Oprah.

Please know that I admire Oprah for all of the causes that she supports, the generosity of donations and the giving that she does for her fellow men and women. As my former pastor always used to say, "I just wish I had some time to share the gospel of Christ with Oprah!"

A born again celebrity of her caliber could do so much more good in the world! It 's not the material good that we do in this world that makes the difference in eternity. It's the spiritual work of Christ, our one and only Savior and Lord Who does the most good.

Physically, we are here to serve our fellow man. Spiritually, all that we can do is point others towards salvation in Him. We can share the Word of God to this sinful, suffering world. We need to serve in deeds and truth.

1Jo 3:17 But whoso hath this world's good, and seeth his brother have need, and shutteth up his bowels [of compassion] from him, how dwelleth the love of God in him?

1Jo 3:18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

1Jo 3:19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.

1Jo 3:20 For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things.

1Jo 3:21 Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, [then] have we confidence toward God.

1Jo 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight.

1Jo 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment.

1Jo 3:24 ¶ And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

News Roundup 2/9/07

Whatever everyone thinks or says about Anna Nicole Smith, she certainly was a beautiful woman who, unfortunately, had a very tragic life. Drudge has several article links with details about her, her tragic life and untimely, young death.

We have seen this so many times. Hollywood stars and entertainers who get caught up in drugs, alcohol, illicit sex, greed over money and fights over custody of children. Now, it appears, there is a third man who is claiming that he might possibly be the father of Anna Nicole's baby daughter.

Sigh...

And we all thought that this media circus surrounding this unfortunate woman couldn't get more bizarre than it already is?

If anything good can come of this tragedy, it might serve as an object lesson for young teen girls not to go in the same direction with their lives as Anna took hers.

As usual, LGF is on top of most breaking news items. (Notice that I have now posted a "headline" link to that blog in my Talkwisdom sidebar.) The entry called Questions That Never Get Asked is quite interesting.

Ask Pres. Bush to Pardon Border Agent Heroes!

Border Agents Wrongly Convicted for Doing Their Jobs!

ALERT: Here's a pop quiz -- ready?

Question: What's the difference between a convicted drug dealer and a heroic Border Patrol Agent?

Answer: Convicted drug dealers are more likely to be granted favors from George W. Bush.

Did you get that one wrong?

Okay, here's another one:

Question: What's the difference between a convicted murderer and a heroic Border Patrol Agent?

Answer: The convicted murderer spends less time in prison.

Did you get them both wrong?

Then maybe you agree -- there is something SERIOUSLY WRONG with our "justice" system! Border Patrol agents have a difficult and often dangerous job in guarding our nation's borders. But the danger shouldn't come from our own government!

According to news reports, in 2005, agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean spotted Osbaldo Aldrete-Davila, a Mexican national, in his van near the Rio Grande, near Fabens, Texas, about 30 miles southeast of El Paso. Ramos gave chase while Compean circled around to head off the suspect. When Mr. Aldrete-Davila jumped out of the van and ran south to the river, he was confronted by Compean, who was thrown to the ground as the two men fought. Ramos said that when he arrived, he saw Compean on the ground and chased Mr. Aldrete-Davila to the river, where the suspect suddenly turned toward him, pointing what looked like a gun. Ramos said he fired at the fleeing suspect but did not think he had been hit after watching him run through the bush, jump into an awaiting van in Mexico and speed off. Nearly 800 pounds of marijuana, worth $1 million, was found in the van that he abandoned at the river's edge.

A job well done, right? After all, that's what the Border Patrol is supposed to do -- try and stop illegal immigrants, especially the "baddies" running drugs. Right?

Wrong.

An investigator from the Department of Homeland Security's Office of Inspector General, which oversees the Border Patrol, tracked down Mr. Aldrete-Davila in Mexico, where he was offered IMMUNITY in exchange for testifying AGAINST the agents! As a result, a federal jury convicted agents Ramos and Compean of causing serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon, discharge of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence, and a civil rights violation. After a two-week trial last year, the two were convicted by a jury on 11 out of 12 counts; they began their sentences of 12 and 11 years' imprisonment, respectively, last month. (Three of the jurors said afterwards they were inclined to deliver a not guilty verdict but had been told by the jury foreman that the judge wanted them to "go along with majority.")

Ramos is serving his sentence at a federal prison in Yazoo City, Mississippi, while Compean is an inmate at a facility in Elkton, Ohio. To add insult to injury -- OUR injury -- Aldrete-Davila, the illegal alien drug-runner, also received care at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso -- and now he's suing the government for $5 million for violating his "civil rights"!

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS.

As patriotic Americans, we MUST do something about this!

TAKE ACTION: The facts in this case do NOT add up or justify the length of the sentences for these agents, let alone their conviction on multiple counts. The arrest, trial and conviction of the two Border Patrol agents had resulted in a chilling effect on others. These men have been given the equivalent of a murder sentence -- in fact, they were given MORE time than the average convicted murderer. Even if you accept every fact exactly as stated by the prosecuting attorney, the verdict handed out was an extreme injustice. Thankfully, a growing number of Congressmen are asking President bush to issue a presidential pardon to the two U.S. Border Patrol agents who shot and wounded a fleeing drug suspect. But it won't happen without a HUGE public outcry -- and that's where YOU AND I come in.

Over Christmas President Bush pardoned 18 people, five of whom were drug dealers. Now he needs to do the right thing, and issue pardons for Agents Ramos and Compean. Click "Go!" NOW to send a FREE message directly to President Bush, asking him to grant an immediate presidential pardon for these two heroes.

NOTE: The President needs to move QUICKLY. Since almost 30% of federal prisoners are criminal illegal aliens, many of whom are drug dealers, the agents face substantial danger. Last weekend, "America's Most Wanted" aired a segment which profiled the Border Patrol Agents' case. Shortly afterwards, Agent Ramos was badly assaulted by fellow inmates in his Mississippi prison. Four inmates attacked him, kicking him in the head, the side and the shoulders with steel-toed boots. Injuries sustained by Ramos on Saturday included bleeding from the ear, a degree of paralysis that has developed in the agent's left arm, and migraine headaches. So, not only did the administration choose the side of an illegal immigrant drug dealer over the agents who stopped him from smuggling a load of drugs into the country; now they've failed to protect that agent while this case is on appeal.

THIS MUST BE CORRECTED!

This outrageous prosecution and sentencing does nothing but tie the hands of the Border Patrol and prevent the agency from securing America against a flood of illegal immigrants, drugs, counterfeit goods and, quite possibly, terrorists. It puts the rights of illegal smugglers ahead of our homeland security and undermines the critical mission of better enforcing immigration laws. These two agents should NOT be made scapegoats for our government's enforcement failures. Be sure to send this Alert to EVERYONE you know who wants to demand REAL JUSTICE for these two heroic border patrol agents.

Thank you!
