Fighting the World, the Flesh, and the Devil

When I read about the uproar over Dr. Benjamin Carson's remarks on Hannity regarding his beliefs about marriage, I instinctively knew that he would get even more backlash from the progressives.   It wasn't enough to berate him after his National Prayer Breakfast speech (which was awesome!!!), the haters have continually gone after him for his straightforward (and frankly refreshing!) opinions that challenge the lies of Obama.   Now, his offer to be commencement speaker at Johns Hopkins is being challenged by the gay-indoctrination-brainwashed students. So...what else is new?

Here's a brief excerpt from the article:

Host Sean Hannity asked Carson his opinion on same-sex marriage, given the Supreme Court's consideration of two gay marriage cases this week.

"Marriage is between a man and a woman," Carson said. "It's a well-established, fundamental pillar of society and no group, be they gays, be they NAMBLA, be they people who believe in bestiality -- it doesn't matter what they are, they don't get to change the definition."

Students accused Carson of effectively comparing "gay relationships with pedophilia and bestiality."

Dr. Carson responded, saying:

Asked about the students' objections, Carson on Friday told MSNBC it's "their day and the last thing I would want to do is rain on their parade."

Asked whether he's told the university he would not deliver the address, Carson said he was "waiting for appropriate channels."

Carson also told the Baltimore Sun that people  "have completely taken the wrong meaning out of what I was saying."

He added: "Now perhaps the examples were not the best choice of words, and I certainly apologize if I offended anyone. But the point that I was making was that no group of individuals, whoever they are, whatever their belief systems, gets to change traditional definitions."
When Dr. Carson listed additional sexual behaviors along with homosexual behavior, he was pointing out that "no group of individuals, whoever they are, whatever their belief systems [should] get to change the traditional definition of marriage."  If the students think that listing additional aberrant behaviors (actually, very disgusting behaviors!) is so upsetting, then they are impinging upon Dr. Carson's free speech rights.

The truth is, those who like to be pedophiles want the laws changed!  A behavior that here-to-fore was always deemed illegal, disgusting, evil, and sinful, is now being trumped up as "normal" and wants to be included as the new "gay rights" group - so to speak - when it comes to "human rights."  You see, it's a very slippery slope.  Once one group is given the right to change the over 2,000 year old definition of marriage, what will prevent another group - no matter how evil and disgusting - to change their "right" to marry and use the term marriage for their aberrant relationships?

I suspect that these students probably are mostly on the side of Obama and didn't like knowing that Dr. Carson was going to be a commencement speaker.  Perhaps they were just looking for something to use in order to protest and oust him as a speaker.

The author of "The Lord Is My Shepherd" shared an interesting comment he made towards someone who disagreed with his views and wanted to have a verbal fight with him.  It was shared in Chapter 8 "His Provision on Life's Tablelands" which discussed the verse of Psalm 23 that reads, "You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies."

Here is what he wrote:

He [the person who disagreed with him] said we'd have to fight about one thing and another thing, that I was in for a fight, and that if I didn't fight with him over these issues, I wasn't much of a fighter."

The Lord gave me words for the moment.  I told him I was just as much a fighter as he was, but I was fighting the world, the flesh, and the devil.  "If you want to fight with me," I said, "you'll have to decide which of those categories you fit into."

He didn't bother me much after that.
Awesome retort...wasn't it?  But could you imagine if Dr. Carson said those very words back towards the students that were accusing him?  Instead, Dr. Carson did what he could do to tone down the rhetoric.  But the truth is, Dr. Carson IS utilizing his new-found fame to "fight the world, the flesh, and the devil."  It's just not politically correct to say so.

Originally, I wanted to share a guest commentary today that I read in the March issue of The Good News, etc. Christian newspaper.  In a way, it is related to the argument that started between Dr. Carson and the students from Johns Hopkins, so I have decided to include it in this post.

The article is entitled, "Pastor welcomes atheist's billboard," by Chris Clark

The article can be read online in it's entirety here: Digital Edition When you get to the page, click on the page 6-7 below, and then on the single page icon at the top of the page next to the arrows.

Pastor Clark explains several misconceptions [including the misuse of  the phrase "separation of church and state] that isn't in the U.S. Constitution] regarding the bans that are being argued about in courtrooms across the country regarding religious displays in our nation.  He explains why the atheist's billboard (which states, "Atheism - a personal relationship with reality.") doesn't threaten him or his faith and how he is convinced that he knows the Truth, is being transformed by that Truth (Romans 12:2) and that his personal relationship with Jesus Christ convinces him; despite the arguments of those who don't believe.

He writes:

It has been said that a man with an argument is at the mercy of a man with an experience.  I know what I know; I know Whom I know; and that relationship is continually transforming me.

So how is it that I am supposed to be threatened by people who go to such lengths to try to convince others that man is god, when along with that idea they offer no hope, no purpose for life?

In a way, I see this struggle much as what Elijah faced upon Mount Carmel, when he challenged the Baal priests to build an altar  and call on their god while he built an altar and called on the God of Israel, to see who was the true God.

So let the atheists and humanists spend their money and erect a billboard to convince the public of their god, of their constructed reality.  We as followers of Jesus are billboards ourselves, our transformed lives serving as a perennial testimony to Jesus' life and power.  Our own personal relationships with the Creator ought to speak much more loudly than does a billboard by the freeway.

Good News, etc.

P.S.  While typing too fast this morning, I misspelled "Creator" and it came out as "Crator."  I thought of the difference between the term Creator vs. crater, and went to dictionary.com.  For the slang portion of the verb "crater" it reads:

Quote:  verb (used with object)
10.
to make craters in: Bombs had cratered the landscape.
11.
Slang.
a.
to cancel, abandon or cast aside: to crater the new project.
b.
to destroy or ruin: One more disappointment won't crater me. /quote

That term ironically describes the atheist's billboard effort and intent against people of faith...doesn't it?  Ha!

Is It OK For Black Athletes to Be Unabashedly Christian, But Not Whites?

For quite some time now I had been wondering why certain people of a certain race can freely express their Christian faith openly in the professional sports arena, yet another person of a different race gets criticized, scrutinized, blasted, mocked, shunned and even verbally assaulted because of his faith.

After reading Three Ugly Truths Exposed by the Tebow Assault article over at American Thinker, I found one commenter who apparently had been wondering the same thing.

Comment from American Thinker:

T.S. Yesterday 03:10 AM

The discrepancy between media coverage of NBA players' public religiosity vs. Tebow's public religiosity doesn't have anything to do with the NBA being more open to (Christian) religion or traditional values than the NFL. It's about race. It's OK for black people -- basketball players, football players, entertainers, politicians, etc. -- to be openly Christian. It's not, however, OK for white people to be openly Christian. And yes, it's really that simple. That's why it's OK for Barack Obama to go to Jeremiah Wright's church, but not OK for Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, Rick Perry or George W. Bush to go to church.

Now don't be mistaken, the media and the arbiters of our culture don't actually like the fact that Christianity is still strong in the black community. They'd much prefer if blacks were secular and/or antagonistic toward Christianity. Black Islam has historically been celebrated (aside from Louis Farrakhan's anti-Semitism), but black Christianity is still tolerated. And the reason it's tolerated because it's, well, black. So since the "mainstream" media can't attack black Christians, they double up on white Christians.

The one thing that commenter "T.S." left out is the fact that it is NOT alright for a conservative black Christian man or woman to speak of his/her faith in the public arena of politics. The blacks who are left alone regarding their religious faith in Christianity are usually leftist, Democrats that the secular progressives (sec-progs) just about tolerate in public. I wonder whether or not the rabid sec-progs mock them in secret?

The hatred often spewed towards those (of ANY race, color, nationality etc.) who express their BIBLICAL Christian faith openly, share the gospel freely, and aren't ashamed of Jesus Christ has continually been ratcheted up every year. The times here in the U.S. where the media has a field day attacking the Christian faith is very apparent during the Christmas and Easter seasons.  The Bible tells us that such things are prophesied as "the signs of the times" and will increase as we get closer to the Rapture and subsequent return of Jesus Christ.

Have you noticed that the disgusting excuse for a "man" - the wretched Bill Maher - curses and mocks a white Christian young man like Tebow, and still keeps his job at HBO? I will NEVER subscribe to HBO ever again. I dropped it decades ago, mostly because their programming was even offensive back then. And now that they have this despicable little man Maher employed there, I'm glad that they don't get any money from our family. Since I don't watch Maher, but only hear of his rants via the news media, I wonder whether or not he has ever verbally abused a black Christian man (who isn't conservative) who publicly displays his faith in Jesus Christ after any pro-sporting event victory?

If the answer is "no", then why the double standard? Could it only have to do with race? Or is there something more that we should consider?

Maybe BubbaBBQ has a good point:

...Now you have Tim Tebow. Do they embrace him? Nope! Why? He is different. He isn't pretty, he is clean cut, he deflects all glory directed to himself and is very humble. And he is unabashedly Christian. Funny how the analysts all hate him and yet he wins over fans, teammates and foes alike.

99 Percent? Top 25 Occupy Wall Street Backers Worth Over $4 Billion
.

Excerpt:

Occupy Wall Street attacks income inequality and the richest 1 percent, adopting as its slogan ''we are the 99 percent.'' In October, its protesters staged a ''millionaires march' 'in New York City, parading to the homes of wealthy citizens such as Rupert Murdoch and David Koch. But only some riches bother the Occupiers, who have ignored the massive wealth of celebrities in their own ranks.
The top 25 richest celebrities supporting Occupy Wall Street, according to the website Celebrity Net Worth, possess a combined net worth just over $4 billion.
While JP Morgan and Chase banker Jamie Dimon (worth $200 million) was one of the targets of the ''millionaires march,'' he has a net worth less than five of the celebrities supporting OWS.
That's not surprising. Many of the celebrities supporting Occupy Wall Street seem to be oblivious to the amount of wealth they possess.
Comedienne Roseanne Barr, (worth $80 million), was quoted quite literally calling for the heads of wealthy, declaring:''I do say that I am in favor of the return of the guillotine and that is for the worst of the worst of the guilty. I first would allow the guilty bankers to pay, you know, the ability to pay back anything over $100 million [of] personal wealth because I believe in a maximum wage of $100 million. And if they are unable to live on that amount of that amount then they should, you know, go to the re-education camps and if that doesn't help, then being beheaded.''
Barr inadvertently called for the heads of 13 celebrities supporting the Occupy Wall Street who make more than $100 million from singer Miley Cyrus to writer Stephen King.

Since Roseanne Barr's name could be included in the definition of words like CRAZY and IGNORANT, please read the entire article at
Newsbusters for more liberal secular prog. hypocrisy by celebrities.

Also see Nice Deb: Top 25 Celebrity Occupy Wall Street Supporters Have Combined Net Worth Over $4 Billion…

So....why don't these EXTREMELY RICH celebrities who supposedly support the OWS movement re-distribute THEIR OWN WEALTH to help these people....HMMMMM????

The hypocrisy is really laughable; but at the same time it is so sad because these people have been severely duped by GeorgEVIL Soros and ObaMARXIST.

Jesus Makes Our Hearts Whole Again

As a Christian believer in Jesus Christ (who is the Son of God, Lord, Savior, Creator and King) my work here at this blog is, unfortunately, sometimes shunned (or even mocked) by non-believers. Why do they feel that way? Why do they feel the need to mock such beliefs? It could be due to a myriad of reasons.

Dr. David Jeremiah covers many of them in his new book, I Never Thought I'd See The Day! Culture at the Crossroads. However, there is one reason for such angst that is common amongst most skeptics. In my own research that I had done years ago, it was helpful to study the writings of people who posted at a skeptics website forum called "Skeptics Annotated Bible."  I must warn you that people there can be brutal, but it helps you to develop a thick skin during confrontation.  The day that I found another website entitled, "Skeptics Annotated Bible Refuted" actually made my task against them easier.  Eventually, I stopped showing up there and started my own forum (now discontinued due to this blog).

During that time, I discovered that angry skeptics are just lost people who have a severe hole in their heart (whether they want to admit it or not) that can never be filled until they are redeemed through the Cross of Christ and reconciled back unto God. That is when a person becomes whole spiritually, intellectually, emotionally, and even physically!

Every testimony that I have ever heard - from a new believer in Christ all the way up to the more seasoned believers in the Lord Jesus Christ - included such healing. The salvation of the soul is instantaneous at the born-again moment of genuine conversion. However, the healing of the whole person continues on until the day we die. This is known as sanctification. Please see Becoming a Christian for more detailed information.

Studying the Bible for over 23 years now has enabled me to be more and more confident in what I share regarding the way of God in truth. It is not because of who I am, but because of Who Jesus is that I can have such confidence. The Bible is God's written Word of truth without any error. The Bible reveals Jesus Christ - God's Living Truth!   The Old Testament pointed towards the coming Messiah. The New Testament reveals Jesus as the long-awaited Messiah spoken about in the Old Testament. Prophecies regarding Jesus (and there are over 300 of them!!) have mostly been fulfilled. Those that haven't been fulfilled yet WILL BE at the end of the age.

The creation of the State of Israel in 1948 was a huge, modern times fulfillment of Bible prophecy. Israel became an independent, united nation for the second time in history, and for the first time in 2,900 years! But did you know that
nine additional prophecies where fulfilled in 1948? Many people are not aware of that fact.

Think about all of the centuries where non-believers scoffed at those ten prophecies; thinking that they would never be fulfilled! I think that the same thing is happening today regarding the return of Jesus Christ.   It truly saddens my heart to realize that fact.  Dr. Jeremiah's new book reveals the main reasons why our culture has shifted so drastically from the Judeo-Christian roots that our Founding Fathers so wisely utilized in the formation of the United States of America.

You might ask, 'What happens to the non-believers?"  The Bible reveals their fate.  Look it up!  When Jesus does return, those who did not accept Him as Lord and Savior of their lives will grieve deeply over their wrong decisions.  But there is no good reason for them to continue to be snared in the trap of "the marketplace of sin" when  Jesus Christ paid a ransom price to redeem mankind out of it!

I can't wait to get to the end of Dr. Jeremiah's book where the chapter tells us, "When Changing Your Mind Could Save Your Life."

I would encourage anyone who does not know Jesus Christ and/or the Bible as well as they should to read the book of John. That is the very first book that I read when I seriously started studying the Bible. It enabled me to re-dedicate my life to Christ after years of wandering away from Him. It is the one book of the Bible that I recommend for anyone who is still searching for the truth.

Below is Turning Point's daily devotional for this weekend. It fits right in with this post!

Have a blessed weekend!

Yours in Christ's service,
~ Christine

Day of the Cross: God Provides Redemption

In whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.
Colossians 1:14

Recommended Reading
Colossians 2:13-14
Some theologians limit the purpose of Christ's death on the cross to being an example of sacrificial love, an illustration of His words in John 15:13: "Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one's life for his friends." Jesus proved that such costly love was possible when He illustrated it by His own sacrificial action.

Jesus certainly was an example of love and other godly attributes as well--imitated by the apostles (1 Corinthians 11:1). But something more profound than an example happened on the cross: Jesus Christ paid a ransom price to redeem mankind out of the marketplace of slavery to sin (Galatians 3:13; 1 Timothy 2:6). The most important transaction in history took place: Jesus exchanged His innocent life for our sin-stained life, dying the death we deserved that we might, by God's mercy, be spared the judgment we richly deserved. Because God was pleased with Christ in every way, the Cross turned away the wrath of God (Romans 5:9).

Take a moment today to thank God for the Day of the Cross and your redemption from sin.

The heart of the gospel is redemption, and the essence of redemption is the substitutionary sacrifice of Christ.

Atheists Become God

This week, I will be working on a series of postings under the title of "New Think." I will be sharing how some Christians can be persuaded to either veer away, or simply choose not to get involved with what John MacArthur labeled in his book as "The Truth War - Fighting for Certainty in an Age of Deception."

The irony will be made clear that those who follow this kind of "New Think" are actually falling for some of the oldest tricks in Satan's arsenal of deception. My first post may take a while. Two days, in fact. In the meantime, I want to bring over a very interesting conversation that was started by Sothenes over at my Talk Wisdom message board. There have been 162 views, so there is a public interest in the current bantering written there.

The following is a copy of the posts (so far), as of 3/8/10 at 10:42 a.m. Additional replies and comments will be added here when posted over at the message board. Comments by Talk Wisdom blog readers are welcomed here, as well.

Atheists become God
Don Carson - What Is Sin And How Is It Different From Idolatry?Atheism becomes your supreme good and replaces the God who is there and that becomes god for you because that is idolatry.

No, Sothenes; the 'supreme good' is to help others. If you can supply any evidence that any god--Zeus, Odin, Marduk, YHWH, or any other--is "there"--provide it. That's all I ask. Now pay attention, because there'll be a quiz later. Atheism means "without belief in a god or gods". If you can explain to us how not believing in a god makes that person into a god, please do so. Then you can tell us how that disbelief translates as 'sin'. I certainly don't worship myself, I don't demand that anyone else do so, and would be embarrassed if anyone did.I'm not like some supernatural beings who command you to acknowledge them.Given that our hostess won't post my reply for days after yours, this may take some time. That's okay; I'll wait as long as it takes for an answer.

Again, God's Word says it best:

Rom 1:17 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, [fn] for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.

Rom 1:18 For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

Rom 1:19 because what may be known of God is manifest in them, for God has shown [it] to them.

Rom 1:20 For since the creation of the world His invisible [attributes] are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, [even] His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse,

Rom 1:21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify [Him] as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

Rom 1:22 Professing to be wise, they became fools,

Rom 1:23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man--and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

Rom 1:24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonor their bodies among themselves,

Rom 1:25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

Sorry GM - you are without excuse for not knowing Him through the evidence of His Son, Jesus Christ, - according to God's Word.

Sorry, admin--I don't need excuses. I have reasons, which are a whole lot better.
I see no evidence of any God, and never have. I have no reason to believe one exists. Jesus, who is claimed to be his son, almost certainly did exist, but his divinity is doubtful. No one has produced evidence of it; not Paul, not you. All you have are assertions, which you call faith.

Citing Jesus Christ as evidence to prove the existence of God is like claiming Robin the Boy Wonder as evidence to prove the existence of Batman!

Besides...if I, as an atheist, 'become' God...I couldn't believe in myself, either! Sorry, I'm just not that debased.

No evidence? How about an empty tomb? How about the fact that after the Resurrection of Jesus Christ, he was seen by all of the disciples plus 500 more people?

Yes. I have faith. Based on the Bible's teachings - it is indeed a reasonable faith.

An empty tomb is just that: an empty tomb. Tutankhamen isn't in his tomb anymore, either.

Where and when did the latter event take place? We know about the disciples (and we all know that Thomas didn't believe it until he actually saw Jesus, right?). AFAIK, we have only Paul's word on it, and even he never claimed that he saw it himself. Who among that crowd wrote down what he saw? No one. Who's the only one who speaks of it? No one...except a guy who didn't see it himself.

I think it's glorified hearsay...but if you consider it reasonable, fine. I'm not convinced.

Quote:
The Causes of Atheism

Fatherlessness

It was Sigmund Freud who hypothesized that belief in God was simply the product of a psychological need of a loving father. However, as Spiegel notes, calling largely upon the research of Paul Vitz’s The Faith of the Fatherless (1999), Freud provides a basis for suspecting that atheism, in many cases, is actually the result of the resentment the atheist harbors toward his or her own father, in turn, justifying his rejection of a God.

Vitz’s work is highlighted throughout this chapter to sustain the large list of atheists who had lost their father early in life (David Hume, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, Bertrand Russell, Jean-Paul Sartre, and Albert Camus) or who had fathers that we abusive or weak (Voltaire, H.G. Wells, Madalyn Murray O’Hair, Ludwig Feuerbach, Sigmund Freud, and Albert Ellis).

One of the most interesting sections of this chapter centered around the new atheists and their relationships with their fathers:

“What about the new atheists? Do they confirm this thesis? We know that Daniel Dennett’s father died in plane crash in 1947, when Dennett was just five years old…Christopher Hitchen’s father appears to have been very distant…tragically, when Hitchens was twenty-four, his mother killed herself in a suicide pact with lover. After his mother’s death, Hitchens says, “I no longer really had a family,” which is an especially sad statement considering his father was still alive. As for Richard Dawkins and Sam Harris, there is very little information available regarding their relationships with their fathers.” [p. 68-69]

The author admits that “the psychological dynamics of atheism are very complex, but the impact of the father relationship does appear to be profound…Human beings were made in God’s image, and the father-child relationship mirrors that of humans as God’s “offspring.” We unconsciously (and often consciously, depending on one’s worldview) conceive of God after the pattern of our earthy father.” [p. 68-69]

Moral Depravity

I found this section to most fascinating. Spiegel challenges the reader with the idea that many of the most intelligent men and women reject God because of their moral depravity. Moreover, he makes the astute connection that an intellectual’s work is clearly impacted by one’s personal conduct. In fact, in many cases, the intellectual’s work is often the muse in which he or she attempts to justify his or her repugnant behavior.

Spiegel proceeds to quote E. Michael Jones to sustain this point:

“There are ultimately only two alternatives in the intellectual life: either one conforms desire to the truth or one conforms truth to desire. These two positions represent opposite poles between which a continuum of almost infinite gradations exist.” [p. 74]

The author then continues by providing numerous examples of many well-respected intellectuals of the past that clearly have “conformed the truth” to their largely sexual desires and in turn have corrupted their scholarly work as well:

“God delivers the sexually immoral over to a depraved mind. Jones sums it up well: “Sexual sins are corrupting…The most insidious corruption brought about by sexual sin, however, is the corruption of the mind. One moves all too easily from sexual sins, which are probably the most common to mankind, to intellectual sins, which are the most pernicious.” [p. 80]

As this chapter closes, the topic of faith is freshly revisited by considering the works of nineteenth-century Harvard philosopher William James.

Spiegel writes:

“James makes his point by using the illustration of a mountain climber who is unsure as to whether he can make it safely across a difficult pass. If he succeeds, he will go on to safety. But if he fails, death awaits. Can he make it? He will never know either way until he actually ventures. James makes a similar point about many philosophical issues, where the evidence alone is inconclusive. The lesson he draws is that faith is practically necessary. He concludes, ‘In the average man…the power to trust, to risk a little beyond the evidence, is an essential function…We cannot live or think at all without some degree of faith.’” [p. 83-84]

Indeed; this is true for the theologian, philosopher, and the atheist.

The Obstinacy of Atheism

Admittedly, many times when I am dialoguing with an atheist, I feel like I am talking with someone from another world. And I certainly realize that they most likely feel the same way about talking to me!

Drawing upon the now famous work of physicist Thomas Kuhn in his classic book, The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, Spiegel attempts to use Kuhn’s concept of a “paradigm” to help the reader understand the atheist position better. He notes that the atheistic paradigm (a set of assumptions, definitions, laws, and techniques) must “reject as false…all references to miracles, souls, divine authority of Scripture, or personal experience of God.” Further, Spiegel admittedly writes that:

“…theists and atheists, in a sense, live in different worlds. God is at the center of the theist’s worldview, and this colors his or her every experience and value judgment. On the other hand, the axis of a worldview without God is necessarily the self, and the atheist’s values and personal experience are shaped accordingly.” [p. 101]

Spiegel continues by stating:

“The difference in perspective is compounded when we consider the concept of spiritual discernment, which is granted only to those in whom the Holy Spirit dwells. As Paul writes, “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor 2:14). [p. 102].

As this chapter ends, Spiegel assesses John Calvin’s sensus divinitatis. According to Calvin, the sensus divinitatis refers to every human’s natural awareness of God that is inborn or innate.

Spiegel notes:

“Somehow, each of us comes into this world equipped with what we might call a spiritual “antenna,” to use yet another analogy. As one matures, this antenna becomes operational, usually beginning in early childhood. Many parents, like myself, can attest to the natural ability in children to understand and respond to the reality of God.” [p. 107]

The author believes that this concept of sensus divinitatis provides insight into the reason that many atheists seem incapable of sensing or thinking clearly about God. Simply put, their minds are suffering from the effects of sin. Drawing upon the argumentation of Plantinga once again, Spiegel explains that the non-believer’s mind has a type of “cognitive malfunction” that hinders their mind from working in the way it was created to.

Spiegel goes on to explain:

“What causes malfunction in any system always comes back to the fall. Sin and its consequences have wreaked havoc on the world, and human cognition is no exception. In short, sin disrupts our ability to think straight…discussion of such issues is outside the scope of this book, but it is worth noting that the noetic effects of sin extend far beyond theological matters. Cognition about God is only the most immediately impacted by sin.” [p. 111]

Spiegel ends this chapter by summarizing the overall case made in the book:

"The descent into atheism is caused by a complex of moral-psychological factors, not a perceived lack of evidence for God’s existence. The atheist willfully rejects God, though this is precipitated by immoral indulgences and typically a broken relationship with his or her father. Thus, the choice of the atheistic paradigm is motivated by non-rational factors, some of which are psychological and some of which are moral in nature…

The hardening of the atheistic mind-set occurs through cognitive malfunction due to two principal causes. First, atheists suffer from paradigm-induced blindness…second, atheists suffer from damage to the sensus divinitatis, so their natural awareness of God is severely impeded. Both of these mechanisms are aspects of the noetic effects of sin.” [p. 113-114].

Conclusion?

An interesting read, Sothenes.

So where in these parameters do you think I fit?

You've made the determination, Sothenes, not I.

You've posted an extensive quote about the perceived motivations and causes of atheism. You listed 'fatherlessness', 'moral depravity', and 'obstinacy'.
Your source mentions something about “damage to the sensus divinitatis” (is there such a thing?), and something about “the noetic effects of sin.” (It sounds very much like Spiegel is of the Martin Luther school of noetics: Reason is dangerous, and must be submerged or destroyed.)

Yet when I ask you which of these you think applies to me, you suddenly get all coy and say that I have to determine what I'm suffering from!
If you're going to insult me, do it like you mean it, instead of couching it in such eunuchoid phrases.
If you're not going to insult me, just answer the question. It was a simple one, after all.

GM,

You are suffering from the ravages of sin. Period. We all are. However, Jesus Christ has shown us the way of truth to get us out of the predicament of punishment for our own sins upon our own souls. It depends upon how one answers Jesus' question:

"Who do you say that I am?"

And once you determine the answer to that question, it depends on whether or not you believe Jesus's claim:

"I am the way, the truth and the life, no one comes to the Father except by Me."

Once you agree (or disagree) with Jesus' proclamation, then you choose your destiny for all eternity.

You are suffering from eternal separation from God. It is what all men and women suffer from, until they become born again in Christ (see John 3).

So you see, GM, it doesn't really matter what Sothenes or I, or any other Christian "thinks" brought you towards your atheism/skepticism/rejection of Christ and God's Word, etc. What matters is whether or not you will continue to reject the only Savior who can heal you and be the bridge back for you - unto God the Father.

We've been here before, hostess, but I'll say it again.

A wise man? So it is said.
An extraordinary teacher? So I've been told.
The Son of God? I don't believe it.

Okay: I don't. Because those words mean that the story of Ezekiel is just a story; and if Ezekiel is true, then Jesus' words are not. Christers have to believe both. I don't have that dilemma.

Quote:

"Who do you say that I am?" isn't a proclamation, just a question. And in the stories built around that question, Jesus proclaimed nothing; in fact, he advised his followers to also not proclaim anything.
Except for the past few decades, I have no idea where I spent eternity. I have no memories of it. I fully expect it to be the same a few decades from now.

There are Buddhist and Muslim and Jewish and Hindu believers who'd claim the same about you. I'm no more impressed by that statement than they are—less, in fact.

You could have stopped after “thinks”. Because it's not only Christ and God's Word I reject; it's the 'etc' as well—the Buddhist and Muslim and Jewish and Hindu 'words'. All equally fanciful, all contradictory, all citing a false authority.

See you next year, when you bring this up again.

We have been here - many times.

You have made your position very clear, GM. But for the purpose of telling you why it doesn't matter what Sothenes and I (or other Christians) think led to your atheism/skepticism/non-belief/hatred for the God of the Bible/non-belief in Christ's deity, I wrote what I wrote here in this thread.

You have your reasons for non-belief. I have my reasons for steadfast belief in the Truth that Jesus Christ reveals.

Sometimes, a devotional becomes a better tool to share why I personally believe as I do:

Evening

I know whom I have believed, and am persuaded that he is able.

Able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.

Able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all [things], may abound to every good work.

Able to succour them that are tempted.

Able . . . to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

Able to keep you from falling, and to present [you] faultless before the
presence of his glory with exceeding joy.

Able to keep that which I have committed unto him against that day.

Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.

Believe ye that I am able to do this? . . . According to your faith be it unto you.

And I wrote to tell you why I don't agree with that. Whatever happened to an "agree to disagree" standoff?

Exactly.

Fine. I have my reasons to think that the 'Truth' wasn't revealed only by him.

That's all I'm sayin'. But you have to go put all that “atheism/skepticism/non-belief/hatred for the God of the Bible/non-belief in Christ's deity” on it. Because I don't believe in something, I automatically hate it? C'mon! I don't believe in Scientology either, and I laugh at such beliefs!
Are you ticked because you believe I'm laughing at yours?

More GMPilot Rationalizing - I see....

Before my blogging days, I posted quite regularly at my Talk Wisdom message board. There was a small group of regulars who posted articles, links and comments in the various categories included at the forum. Once I began blogging on a regular basis, I didn't really keep up with the forum. In fact, the spam registrations over there were so annoying (and time consuming to remove), that I shut down the open registration. Those who wish to join the board now sign up via the "Contact Us" icon at the bottom of the page. Some spammers have wasted my time emailing their dumb links through the contact method! They don't seem to want to give up! Their links are immediately deleted, so why do they waste time with it?

Anyway, with that brief explanation as to why I don't write at that board much anymore, I wanted to share a recent post written by GMPilot:

Happy Anniversary!

Well, whaddaya know!
Has it really been five years since I read that polemic of yours and decided to confront you on it?

Has it really been five years that you and I have comported on God, the Bible, communism, Andrea Yates, George Bush, Barack Obama, the ACLU, the ADF, homosexuality, the Pope, Mexicans, Nazis, Nancy Pelosi, Rush Limbaugh, the USAAF, the USS Intrepid, Iraq, Afghanistan, New Jersey, the 2004 tsunami, the 2008 elections, Ted Haggard, Alan Sears, computer glitches, and a hundred other things I’ve left out?

Have I really faced down the likes of HAMMER, Wizard, Saltnlight444, Christian Brother, Sothenes, and Mr. Baker—not to mention Admin—and lived to tell about it?

Has the past lustrum been just packed with fun and interesting topics?
Yep!

Happy anniversary, hostess! Here’s to us, and the legion of readers we’ve entertained/informed.* Remember that whenever your bullshit gets too deep on this site (your other site is almost hopeless), I’ll be here to clean it up. Someone has to.

I remain your ‘favorite nemesis’,

*6400 hits and counting on that ‘God’s latest felony’ thread! Not bad for something neither of us has contributed to for nearly a year, eh?

In case you might be interested in the thread he is talking about, go to "Rationalizing God's Latest Felony" Yes. That thread holds the record for hits - 6,411 and counting. The post with the second greatest number of hits is The Times of the Signs: The Days of Lot. That thread has 4,752 views. I have neglected to reply to GM's latest post over there. Need to get busy on that.

For now, I will share my reply to GM's comment above:

More GM Rationalizing - I see....

You neglected to quote the correct title - it's "RATIONALIZING God's Latest Felony."

You claim that my other forum is "almost hopeless." Yet, you still read there. So, one must conclude that you like to rationalize what you personally deem as "almost hopeless." Hmmmm...I find it interesting that you don't find what I write and/or share as totally hopeless. That is how most atheists/skeptics/anti-Christian minds often think. They find their "hope" in the "things of this world" - including the current bogus POTUS.

But still, some atheists/skeptics/anti-Christian minds have been turned towards God's Truth. Some eventually figure out that the things of this world are useless to them after they die. They figure out that all that they strive for on this earth provides only temporary fulfillment - if any - at all. Graveyards are filled with formerly rich people (and/or famous) who some would have said, "had it all." However, many of them lived miserable lives while rejecting the only true Hope in the universe - Jesus Christ.

It's funny. On the one hand you wish me a "happy anniversary" regarding this site. Then, you proceed to mock the beliefs that I and other commenters share here and at the blog. Well... it's not surprising. Jesus himself told us that our faith in him would be cause for ridicule. He also stated that the real reason for the mocking is because [they] "hated him first." There is a poignant message in his words. Not only do the unsaved disbelieve that Jesus is who he said he is - the Son of God, Savior, King and Lord - but they also hate him without a cause. But you go even further - don't you GM? Yes. You do. You personally hate him because of your twisted notion of God having committed a "felony" against man because of a tsunami. Why not blame global warming like most clueless liberals do? You would make Al Gore proud if you did!

I don't know whether or not you read a recent post that I wrote on the blog last Sunday. Within the post, I mentioned this:

I was reading in Max Lucado's book - "Traveling Light" - that even when the time for our physical death on this earth arrives, it pales in comparison to what Christ endured for us on the cross.

Lucado explained via a story. He mentioned that in Psalm 23, David wrote, "Yea though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me."

Then, he asked a child who was fearful of the concept of death (something that we are all destined to do) if he would rather be run over by a bus or by the shadow of a bus. The child answered - "the shadow of the bus." Lucado continued to explain that the child answered correctly. And, it is because Jesus took the sins of the world upon himself and that Christ experienced the "run over by a bus" kind of death, that we wouldn't ever have to experience such a death. Instead, we will pass through "the valley of the shadow of death." This is another way to say that we do not die spiritually because of what Christ has done for us! What a marvelous Savior we worship and belong to!!

I thought that was a great analogy to put forth the point that Christ's sacrifice for our sakes was the greatest event in human history! And, his subsequent resurrection from the dead shows us that his word is absolutely true! We can confidently trust him with our very lives!

No other spiritual leader ever claimed to die for the sins of mankind. No other savior could prove exactly who he was by rising from the grave. Jesus was the only one who accomplished that!! Therefore, we can trust him wholeheartedly with our lives! We can trust in his promises! Like this one:

Jhn 14:2
In my Father's house are many mansions: if [it were] not [so], I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Jhn 14:3
And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, [there] ye may be also.
The book of Ephesians, Chapter 5 discusses the fruit of the Spirit. Verse 8 informs us that were all "sometimes[in] darkness. But now, as born again Christians we are now "light in the Lord." The light [meaning holiness, righteousness] shines from Jesus Christ! To walk as children of light, we are to be reflectors of HIS LIGHT [righteousness, holiness]! This is why no one can brag about anything within ourselves. All glory, honor, thanksgiving, and worship belongs to Christ alone!

Here's a verse that humbles each and every believer:

Isa 64:6 But we are all as an unclean [thing], and all our righteousnesses [are] as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.
But we are brought back from our uncleanness through the Lord:

Eph 5:8 ¶ For ye were sometimes darkness, but now [are ye] light in the Lord: walk as children of light:
Eph 5:9 (For the fruit of the Spirit [is] in all goodness and righteousness and truth
Eph 5:10 Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord.

So, as I had stated previously within the "Rationalizing God's Latest Felony" thread, you are sorely misunderstanding the point of life on this earth. And, since you are missing that, you are also misunderstanding the reason for physical death.

Whether it's being "run over by a bus" or "dying by tsunami," the fact is that because of what Jesus Christ did for us at the Cross on Calvary, we only experience "the shadow of the valley of death." That is, if God is with you through the Person of Jesus Christ.

"Yea though I walk through the shadow of the valley of death, I will fear no evil; for Thou art with me."
