The Washington Post has been criticized for a story examining reports of Barack Obama’s “Muslim ties” — but the article’s editor says he is “a little puzzled” that readers didn’t recognize that the intent was to discredit those reports.
“I’m sorry it was misunderstood,” said Assistant Managing Editor Bill Hamilton. “It obviously makes me think about how I edited it.”
The Nov. 29 Post story — headlined “Foes Use Obama’s Muslim Ties to Fuel Rumors About Him” — said the Democratic presidential candidate “has had to address assertions that he is a Muslim and that he had received training in Islam in Indonesia, where he lived from ages 6 to 10…
“Despite his denials, rumors and e-mails circulating on the Internet continue to allege that Obama is a Muslim, a ‘Muslim plant’ in a conspiracy against America, and that, if elected, he would take the oath of office using a Koran, rather than a Bible.”
Obama is a member of a congregation of the United Church of Christ in Chicago.
The Post story does note that Obama aides “sharply disputed” stories that he was a Muslim, and cites an “early rumor” springing from an article in the online magazine Insight that Obama had spent at least four years in a madrassa, or Muslim seminary, in Indonesia. The magazine attributed this assertion to background information collected by Hillary Clinton’s campaign, according to the Post.
In the wake of the Post story, “there have been angry e-mails… and allegations that the Post is swift-boating the Illinois senator by discussing rumors at length, without mentioning whether they’ve been thoroughly discredited by other media,” The Politico reports.
Columbia Journalism Review’s Paul McLeary complained in an online piece that the Post mentioned the Insight article without adding that a CNN reporter flew to Indonesia almost 11 months ago and debunked it.
McLeary said the Post story “may be the single worst campaign ’08 piece to appear in any American newspaper so far this election cycle.”
Hamilton countered that “saying something is a rumor is not saying it’s true. We didn’t say it was a false rumor. To me, a rumor is not true.”
But he conceded to The Politico: “Obviously we did something that we should have been careful about.”
A volunteer coordinator for Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign recently resigned after forwarding a chain e-mail that suggested Obama is a Muslim who wants to destroy the U.S. by being elected to its highest office.
A poll in August by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press found that 45 percent of respondents would be less likely to vote for a Muslim candidate for any office.

LGF: AP Changes Obama/Muslim Connection Story
Excerpt:
As we noted yesterday, the Associated Press released a story stating that Barack Obama had been a Muslim in his childhood. This is the original version of their lead paragraph:Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Sunday he does not think voters have a litmus test on religion, whether evangelical Christianity or his childhood years in the Muslim faith.
Later, the AP article was changed to read:
IOWA FALLS, Iowa (AP) — Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama said Sunday he does not think voters have a litmus test on religion, whether evangelical Christianity or his childhood years in a largely Muslim country.

So, is it really just a rumor or could there be some truth to these allegations?

Barack Obama Apostate From Islam?
Excerpt:
Today, [Note: written @ 8 months ago] the LA Times reports that a childhood friend of Obama’s claims that he did attend Friday prayers at the mosque–
The childhood friends say Obama sometimes went to Friday prayers at the local mosque. “We prayed but not really seriously, just following actions done by older people in the mosque. But as kids, we loved to meet our friends and went to the mosque together and played, said Zulfin Adi, who describes himself as among Obama’s closest childhood friends.
“His mother often went to the church, but Barry was Muslim. He went to the mosque,” Adi said. “I remember him wearing a sarong.
Additionally, the LA Times recounts statements made by Barack Obama’s third- and fourth-grade teacher
“At that time, Barry was also praying in a Catholic way, but Barry was Muslim,” Dharmawan said in Obama’s old classroom, where she still teaches 39 years later. “He was registered as a Muslim because his father, Lolo Soetoro, was Muslim.”
The Times additionally reports that Obama was a registered Muslim and attended weekly religious instruction on the Koran, the Muslim holy book–
Bugs have eaten Obama’s file in the [middle] school’s archive, said Vice Principal Hardi Priyono. But two of his teachers, former Vice Principal Tine Hahiyari and third-grade teacher Effendi, said they remember clearly that at this school too, he was registered as a Muslim, which determined what class he attended during weekly religion lessons.
BUGS have EATEN OBAMA'S FILE IN THE MIDDLE SCHOOL'S ARCHIVES?
Is that just code word for getting rid of files that they don't want to get out for public viewing? Sounds like the Muslim version of the Sandy Berger theft escapades!
This is just all too suspicious, people. He and his "people" obviously are actively hiding something...
Oprah and all the rest of Obama's minnions must have blinders on.
The more that I read about this guy, the less I trust him. Lies, omissions, and cover-ups galore!
And... it all could spell danger for our nation if he's ever elected to the presidency.

I have to admit. The title of this N.Y. Times Article both concerned me and intrigued me.
Comparing Mike Huckabee to Barack Obama? What's going on here?? Their worldviews are like night and day.
Then, when I realized who the author was, I became even more worried that if THAT MAN (namely, Frank Rich who is hated profusely by Bill O'Reilly) "likes" Huckabee, then we all must now be officially living in the Twilight Zone!!
However, upon reading the article, I found that Rich's views of Huckabee aren't anywhere near as positive at the end of his article as at the beginning of it. In fact, I thought that his labeling Huckabee as "ignorant of foreign policy" an unnecessary jab. Thus, Rich showed his true colors in his actual disdain for Huckabee. He called the current Republican front-runner a "long shot." This shows where his (Rich's) loyalties truly reside, afterall.
I remember when I first got the email about Obama's Muslim upbringing, I did go ahead and check it out as best I could, and all I could find refuting it at the time was spin. The facts did not seem to be in dispute, just that some were saying that it hadn't affected him, and that he is indeed a Christian. I figured that even if that were true, people had a right to know these things, and to demand answers of the man who would like to be our President, so I sent it on. First I got an email from a good friend pointing out that Snopes.com had said that this email was false, so I pointed out to him that they didn't actually disprove any of it, they just spun it. I also pointed out to him that while Snopes.com is pretty good when it comes to finding out if a picture has been doctored and things of that nature, when it comes to political stuff, try as they might, they cannot hide the fact that they are dyed in the wool democrats. This satisfied him.
On the more disturbing side, I got an email from my cousin, very angry with me for forwarding this vicious email about this wonderful man. I was kinda taken aback, after all, how could a Bush adoring Republican, conservative on 99% of the issues you could throw at her, be so enamored of B. Hussien Obama? Then it hit me, he's black. She likes him for the single reason that he's black... throw everything else out the window, that's all it comes down to. She's married to a black man... I had always assumed that they met and fell in love, and she didn't care about his race, I guess I was wrong? HHhhhmmmmm. Anyway, that seems racist to me.
Anyway, I agree that there is some sort of coverup here, and you only cover things up when there really is something to hide. Otherwise he would just come out and say that yes, this was part of his past, but that he had chosen not to embrace his fathers religion, or some such thing as that. To deny verifiable facts means that there is truth there that you don't want getting out.
Besides, for me, I learned all I needed to know about Obama when he refused to say the pledge. And this guy wants to be President!!???!
And as for Huckabee, he just keeps looking more and more like the man for the Republican party. I have had, and still do have, some reservations about him, but he may be the best choice right now... at least I don't view him as a "lesser evil" like you would have to with some of the others.
That being said, maybe someone can explain this to me, I keep hearing it said that Giuliani is the best candidate on terrorism. How so? Just because he was the Mayor of a city that was attacted by Terrorists? This makes him the best choice? I think not. This is a lie that must be exposed. It saddens me that Dick Morris can make this outrageous statement on The O'Reilly Factor and not be challenged about it. Why doesn't Bill look him in the eye and say "What makes him the best?" like he would do to anyone else?
After all, my mom visited Ground Zero on a trip to NYC, maybe that qualifies her to be President... hhhmmmm... well, at least she was only ever married to one man, and never cheated on him... Oh well, this is plenty long enough of a comment already.
Look forward to your opinion.
Matt W.
Hi Matt,
Great comment! Thanks for the tip that Snopes.com is a democrat political partisan hack! Didn't know that! Just proves that you can't always believe everything you read on the internet! Who made "Snopes" God of the truth?
Your cousin's "conversion" towards the dark side (NO pun intended so my readers out there...don't label me racist...please!) of the liberal democrat field seems astonishing to me. Do you think that she has been influenced by her husband to "rethink" her support and position on politics? People do all kinds of things when they are (or, even just think they are) in love. I don't know her at all so can't judge on that one.
It seems to me that many Republicans are tired of the Iraq war. Even though the surge is working, it seems that no one can really celebrate the achievements done by our brave military because of the smear job that the MSM has been doing over the last 5 years. I think that it's going to take a lot of additional positive signs to get the people back on track that both wars (Afghanistan and Iraq) were necessary, just, and strategically appropriate in fighting the war against terrorism. Here's a link to an old article which asks the question "Military brilliance or unintended consequence?"
Thought you might like to read it because it contrasts what historians might eventually write concerning the Iraq war. If you want to register at that discussion forum, let me know and I will open the registration for you to do so. (BTW, I keep it closed most of the time because spammers were registering ALL THE TIME and it took too much time to continually ban and delete them.)
Back to Obama. I didn't even realize that he refused to say the pledge!!! I thought that he just refused to put his hand on his heart! NOW THAT'S EVEN MORE SCARY! Knowing that treason-like blunder, how ANYONE could TRUST this man to be president is beyond belief!!
Huckabee is being attacked relentlessly now...even by Christians! However, the issues that he is being attacked for pale in comparison to what any of the democrats would do to our country if elected into office.
I also think that Guiliani is overrated. His slippage in the polls is very telling. I think that his position on many social issues are way to liberal and conservatives just can't bring themselves to support him because of them.
Don't worry about long comments. I am always happy to read what you have to share!
God bless,
Christine
