Loosely Christian??

Yesterday's North County Times Faith and Values page had an article called, Seaside church becomes center for spiritual living.

I thought how nice...another cult comes into being.

I was ready to dismiss it as such, but then I noticed this phrase in the article:

"There are no crosses or images of Jesus in the room, though the Seaside ministers say the congregation consider itself loosely to be Christian."

O.K. I decided that I've got to challenge this.

Is this new term, "loosely Christian" taking the place of what the book of Jude calls heresy and apostasy? You bet! Of course it is! Heresy and apostasy is warned about in many of the Epistles of Paul, as well. It is prophesied in the Bible that in the last days, people would have "itching ears" for what they want to hear instead of knowing the absolute truth of God's Word, the Bible.

2Ti 4:3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers;
2Ti 4:4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables.

I will analyze what was said in the article and my comments will appear after each paragraph.

Seaside church becomes Center for Spiritual Living

By: RUTH MARVIN WEBSTER - Staff Writer

WHAT WE BELIEVE: An occasional series looking at different faiths.

On any Sunday morning, as a light salty breeze drifts in from the Pacific under a bright cloudless sky, a crossing guard stands in the middle of Lake Drive in Encinitas waving traffic into the Seaside parking lot. The sign at the street still reads Seaside Church of Religious Science, but a new one has been ordered. Soon it will read Seaside Center for Spiritual Living.

My first question. Whose "spirit" are they living with and for? We shall see.

The name has been changed, at least in part, so it no longer will be confused with the Churches of Scientology or Christian Science. "In February at our annual gathering, it was decided to change the name," said the Rev. Dr. Rev. Christina Tillotson, one of the ministers at the center.

Oh yes! Don't want to confuse one cult with another cult! That wouldn't be prudent!

She said that people have often asked her whether the churchgoers were Scientologists or Christian Scientists. "We are still the United Church of Religious Science legally, but we are now doing business as the United Centers for Spiritual Living."

That explains it some. With all the bad publicity that has fallen upon the Scientology cult via Tom Cruise's bizarre behavior, I can't blame them for being motivated to get both the inference of "Scientology" and the label of "Christian Scientist" out of their title! BTW, Christian Science is neither Christian nor Scientific...two heresies for the price of one!

And they're doing a good business. Hundreds of shiny sedans park in straight lines for the 9 and 11 o'clock services. Parking for first-time visitors remains empty near the front of the building, which looks more like a warehouse than a church. Greeters stand by the open doors, extending their hands and their smiles.

Inside the large auditorium, called the sanctuary, rows of forest-green conference chairs placed before the stage fill quickly. There are no crosses or images of Jesus in the room, though the Seaside ministers say the congregation consider itself loosely to be Christian.

What?? Loosely Christian? I can't even believe that they would say that! It's comparable to someone claiming that they are "loosely pregnant." Either you are or you're not!

The point is, either a person is a Christian or isn't a Christian. Since the word Christian means, "Christ in one," there can be no such thing as a "loose" Christian. Carnal Christian? Yes. There are many. But "loosely Christian" gives away their cult status in a heartbeat!

Notice that they don't have "crosses or images of Jesus" in the room. So tell me. Whom do they worship? Do they even know?? They appear similar to the "religious" people in Athens when Paul said in Acts 17:23 - "For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you."

Another thing. When the cross of Christ is ignored, the alarm bells should go off.
Beware the crossless gospel!

"We say it's inclusively Christian, and that the words of Jesus are universal spiritual principles that live in each individual," said Dr. Christian Sorensen, Seaside's spiritual leader. "We are a non-judgmental faith ---- a spiritual nexus, inspiring people to live their divinity and reach out globally."

Here we go! The "tolerance, inclusivity" claim that leads directly to relativism and spiritual oblivion! Oprah and Deepak Chopra would love this group!

But notice how they go further...they claim to want to inspire people to "live their DIVINITY"!! Did you catch that? Breaks the very first commandment..Thou shalt have no other gods before me!

Exd 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

Oldest trick in the book!

Gen 3:5 For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.

Instead of the word "amen," the phrase "and so it is" is used during the service. There are no pews, no Bibles or prayer books, no mention of sin. No recitation of the Lord's Prayer.

No Bibles. No mention of sin. No Lord's prayer. How un-Christian can you get??

2Ti 3:16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

2Ti 3:17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Jesus speaking about the Bible:

Jhn 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

It is only through Jesus Christ that we are saved and is wellpleasing in God's sight.

Hbr 13:21 Make you perfect in every good work to do his will, working in you that which is wellpleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ; to whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.

If we say we don't sin (or ignore the fact) then we deceive ourselves:

Rom 3:23 For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

1 John 1:8 - If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

Lord, teach us to pray:

Luk 11:1 And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.

Luk 11:2 And he said unto them, When ye pray, say, Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done, as in heaven, so in earth.

Luk 11:3 Give us day by day our daily bread.

Luk 11:4 And forgive us our sins; for we also forgive every one that is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil.

A jazz band plays and a guest performer, Mary Dolan, who has collaborated with Bernie Taupin and other big names, strums her guitar and sings spirituals in a rich, soulful voice. The entire room stands to sing, clasping hands and swaying back and forth. "Last Sunday, we had over 400 people here," said Sorensen. "It's fun. I talk about joy. It is a joyful place where we feel the presence of God. And there is lots of music by the best jazz band."

Sorensen says he loves performing artists; his father was an actor and he was a model and actor for a time as well.

On this Sunday, Sorensen speaks about forgiveness, making the analogy between the beach pebbles his young son likes to pick up and stuff into his pockets and the wrongs people do us in our lives.

"Dr. Christian is so dynamic when he speaks, it just flows through him," said Tillotson. "People just love to stand up and clap after he talks."

1Jo 2:4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

1Th 2:13 For this cause also thank we God without ceasing, because, when ye received the word of God which ye heard of us, ye received [it] not [as] the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which effectually worketh also in you that believe.

This "preacher" ignores the Word of God. Whom does he in fact follow then?

Jhn 8:44 Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Sorensen started his ministry in Solana Beach with 25 people nearly 15 years ago. Now the congregation has more than 800 active members. The church also just acquired over an acre of new land and there are four-year plans and six-year plans to build new structures. Last year, members raised more than a million dollars.

"We can offer more opportunities, with our growth," he said. "What is exciting is that we continue to provide spiritual nourishment. It's not about the business, but that it delivers nourishment."

What kind of "spiritual" nourishment? From whom does their spirituality arise?

1 John - Chapter 4

1Jo 4:1 ¶ Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.

1Jo 4:2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:

1Jo 4:3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that [spirit] of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

Last year, Seaside opened a new private elementary school on the grounds, offering kindergarten and first grade. "Last year, we started out with 12 children," said Tillotson. "This year we have a new amazing teacher whom we managed to spirit away from one of the elementary school districts around here. We plan to offer a new grade level every year."

The center has recently started a masters program, accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council, in consciousness studies. A distance-learning program, it started five years ago and takes at least three years to complete. "We are the only small seminary in the world that is accredited," said Tillotson, who serves as the programs dean. "Right now, it is a masters and a ministerial license, but we are working on a program for lay people."

Coursework includes classes in philosophy, psychology, science and spirtuality as well as on many of the world's religions.

It's not about religion...it's about relationship...with Jesus Christ, Son of God, Lord and Savior!

Sorensen said he was "born into this" as both his mother and father were followers of Religious Science from the early days of the movement that began in Los Angeles under the leadership of Dr. Ernest Holmes.

Though he was born and raised in New England, Holmes discovered his spiritual philosophy and his following in Southern California. First working as a purchasing agent for the city of Venice in Los Angeles, he began lecturing at libraries and later at the Ambassador Hotel and the Wiltern Theatre on Sunday mornings about philosophy, religion and metaphysics. Then, with the publication of his successful book, "The Science of Mind" in 1926, even more people came to his speaking engagements.

It's all about him apparently. No mention of anything being about the one and only true God of the universe!

See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. Colossians 2:8

After a few years, Holmes and his followers incorporated as a nonprofit religious and educational organization called the Institute of Religious Science and the School of Philosophy. Later the institute launched a popular monthly magazine called Science of Mind Magazine which recently celebrated its 70th anniversary and has a worldwide circulation.

But before Holmes' death in 1960, a schism within the church occurred over adoption of a new constitution that would involve increased centralization of power in a national body. At the time, 46 churches chose to accept the constitution, forming what is known today at the United Centers for Spiritual Living, based in Burbank.

The other branch of 19 churches formed Religious Science International which is based in Spokane, Wash. According to the Rev. Kathryn McDowell, an ordained Religious Science minister based in Arizona, the United Church of Religious Science has 40,000 members worldwide in 160 churches and 106 study groups, with smaller branches and churches retaining a great deal of autonomy.

Using the views expressed in Holmes' "The Science of Mind," the Religious Science movement is said to endorse all sorts of meditation from creative visualization to more traditional techniques as a way to commune with a state of God. It also endorses all forms of prayer and teaching a form of prayer called Spiritual Mind Treatment, a sort of affirmation or statement about a particular goal.

Commune with a state of God? Whose god? What god? Man's mind is a god?

We are warned about divination in both the Old and New Testaments.
Deu 18:10 There shall not be found among you [any one] that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, [or] that useth divination, [or] an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch,

2Ki 17:17 And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke him to anger.

Jer 14:14 Then the LORD said unto me, The prophets prophesy lies in my name: I sent them not, neither have I commanded them, neither spake unto them: they prophesy unto you a false vision and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

Eze 13:7 Have ye not seen a vain vision, and have ye not spoken a lying divination, whereas ye say, The LORD saith [it]; albeit I have not spoken?

Act 16:16 And it came to pass, as we went to prayer, a certain damsel possessed with a spirit of divination met us, which brought her masters much gain by soothsaying:

Act 16:17 The same followed Paul and us, and cried, saying, These men are the servants of the most high God, which shew unto us the way of salvation.

Act 16:18 And this did she many days. But Paul, being grieved, turned and said to the spirit, I command thee in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her. And he came out the same hour.

Religious Science believes that heaven and hell are states of mind, that sins are transgressions of spiritual perfection and that there is no devil per se. As for the concept of life after death, it also teaches the eternality of life, though it neither endorses nor rejects the idea of reincarnation.

Jesus called hell a real place, spoke about how vitally important it is to avoid going there, and mentioned it several times during his three year ministry on earth.

Mat 5:29 And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Mat 5:30 And if thy right hand offend thee, cut it off, and cast [it] from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not [that] thy whole body should be cast into hell.

Mat 10:28 And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Mat 11:23 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted unto heaven, shalt be brought down to hell: for if the mighty works, which have been done in thee, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.

Mat 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Mat 18:9 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast [it] from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.

Mat 23:15 Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Mat 23:33 [Ye] serpents, [ye] generation of vipers, how can ye escape the damnation of hell?

Mar 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed, than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Mar 9:45 And if thy foot offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter halt into life, than having two feet to be cast into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched:

Mar 9:47 And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out: it is better for thee to enter into the kingdom of God with one eye, than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire:

Luk 10:15 And thou, Capernaum, which art exalted to heaven, shalt be thrust down to hell.

Luk 12:5 But I will forewarn you whom ye shall fear: Fear him, which after he hath killed hath power to cast into hell; yea, I say unto you, Fear him.

Luk 16:23 And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

Apostles speaking of hell:

Act 2:27 Because thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Act 2:31 He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

Jam 3:6 And the tongue [is] a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.

2Pe 2:4 For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast [them] down to hell, and delivered [them] into chains of darkness, to be reserved unto judgment;

Resurrected and ascended Jesus speaking about hell in Revelation:

Rev 1:18 I [am] he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Rev 6:8 And I looked, and behold a pale horse: and his name that sat on him was Death, and Hell followed with him. And power was given unto them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with sword, and with hunger, and with death, and with the beasts of the earth.

Rev 20:13 And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

Rev 20:14 And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

"We like to say we are teaching a spiritual philosophy, a broad perspective and religion as dogma," said Sorensen. "We don't make other religions wrong and recognize there are many paths to enlightenment. We welcome everyone."

Deepak Chopra's dream! Similar philosophy, too.

But what does Jesus say?

Jhn 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

Congressman Turned Sex Predator!

The good news today is that 2 more 'sexual indoctrination' bills have been vetoed in California. Gov. Schwarzenegger turns back the effort of looney left Democratic Legislators who passed terrible bills designed to make school kids 'sexualized activists.'

In the WND link above, CRI's Meredith Turney stated:

"Schools should be centers of learning – learning the fundamentals of education such as reading, writing and arithmetic," Turney said. "Instead, the legislature has focused on advancing a radical social agenda in public schools. Hopefully, next session the legislature will make educating – not indoctrinating – students a priority."

I agree wholeheartedly! Enough is enough with the homosexual indoctrination bills!! But do you think that this triple defeat will stop the homosexual activists (there are at least 6!) in the California Legislature? Probably not. They will be back again next year; trying to force an agenda that the public clearly does not want! Gotta keep fightin!...

The bad news today is to find out that U.S. Congressman Mark Foley of Florida, who was co-chairman of the House Missing and Exploited Children Caucus, and was involved with a sexual predator preventative bill (I think), has now been found to be a sexual predator himself!

Found a link to another article that contains a PDF link to the actual instant messenger conversation. Anyone know if this might lead to criminal charges against the former congressman? This is really sick...and awful, folks...

I always liked Congressman Foley. He appeared on Fox News several times, fighting for bills that protect children. Now, he has done a very stupid thing by soliciting sex with a 16-yr.-old teen boy who was a former page for another congressman! What a let down for all the people who trusted this man to represent them! What a let down for Congress and the Republican party! What a let down for all decent people everywhere!

Sheesh!!!!

Forced To Throw Out Religious Beliefs?

What's a Religious Doctor to Do?

It is becoming increasingly difficult for religious medical professionals to practice medicine without compromising their moral convictions.

CRI (Capitol Resource Institute) reported earlier this week that Governor Schwarzenegger signed AB 2583 requiring religious pharmacists or their employers to place a sign near the entrance of the pharmacy flagging to the public that they will not fill certain prescriptions based on moral objections. This branding of religious pharmacists is shocking discrimination.

Most recently, physicians with North Coast Women's Care Medical Group in San Diego are under fire for refusing to give a lesbian patient infertility treatment.

North Coast's medical director, Dr. Douglas Fenton, stated that they could not administer the fertility treatment because of the staff's religious beliefs. Their patient then sued, stating that she was being discriminated against because of her sexuality.

North Coast lost at the trial court level in 2004, but won on appeal. The case is now being considered by the California Supreme Court.

"Doctors with anti-gay religious beliefs are not excused from obeying the laws that govern all of us. That our client's doctors felt that they could defy well-established California law and medical ethics is very worrisome for all of us in a civil society," said Jennifer Pizer, senior counsel at Lambda Legal Defense, representing the plaintiff.

CRI, however, stands wholeheartedly behind the medical professionals who simply want to go to work every day and help people without having to compromise their sincerely held religious beliefs.

"Homosexual-behavior advocates once again are pitted against God-fearing individuals with strong moral convictions," said Karen England, Executive Director of Capitol Resource Institute. "That a doctor should be forced to throw out his religious beliefs, in order to artificially inseminate a lesbian woman, shows absolutely no tolerance for people of faith."

"This lawsuit is not ultimately about forcing a doctor to inseminate a lesbian, it's about destroying religious freedom and making sexual-expression freedom the highest liberty in the land," said England.

First, just how ridiculous is AB 2583? People, at this rate we are going to Bill ourselves to death in California!

Second. How easy would it have been for that lesbian woman to simply go to another doctor who would be willing to inseminate her? Why did she need to first attempt to force this doctor to perform a procedure that is against his personal, religious beliefs, and then sue him because he doesn't agree with her particular morality?

Can anyone see the hypocrisy of this?

Can we see why homosexual indoctrination bills and laws are dangerous to our religious freedom to choose and freedom of association?

The left is all for "choice" when it means abortion. But when a doctor chooses not to inseminate a lesbian through his own religious convictions, that's a bad thing!

Karen was absolutely right when she stated that this whole lawsuit thing isn't just about a lesbian and her pursuit of insemination. No. It's about pitting (and thus, destroying) religious freedom against the indoctrination mantra of forced homosexual agenda coersion that is rampant in our nation today.

Hey look....speaking as the heterosexual woman that I am, if I wanted to be artificially inseminated and the first doctor I went to told me that he does not perform such a service, I'd simply go to another doctor!! I'm sure that there would be hundreds of doctors who would be willing to help me. Whatever the doctor's reason for not wanting to perform the service should not matter; even if, perhaps, it wasn't for religious reasons.

Why do homosexuals always have to scream, "discrimination because I'm gay?" Why can't they see that this lesbian woman's action to sue the doctor is discrimination against his religious beliefs and just leave him alone?

The answer is because she has an agenda to push and shove down the throats of anyone who does not agree with her lifestyle. And California is the land of homosexual indoctrination laws that are leading to the manipulation and mind-numbing control of everyone, including the innocent minds of children, through their constant evil marketing techniques.

This agenda's purpose is nothing more than a tool being used to destroy the religious convictions of the faithful and further lead us all down that slippery slope to moral depravity...to the detriment of us all. I am truly sick of it all!!

God help us...

The Rise of Traditional Culture Warriors

Yesterday, I picked up a copy of Bill O'Reilly's new book Culture Warrior. I don't usually agree with everything the man has to say, but at least he is out there standing up for most of the critical cultural issues that traditional warriors agree with, while at the same time, reasonably stating why secular progressives need to be confronted and challenged for their very different views of what America's moral culture should strive to be.

While skimming through the book, I found some interesting points that I do agree with.

O'Reilly writes:

By the way, traditional warriors do not base their philosophy on bigotry, as many secular-progressive propaganda merchants charge. We look at what is best for the country.

He goes on to state that respect for legal partnerships is a decent view. But altering the traditional fabric of society is not necessary in order to do that. I agree wholeheartedly with that last statement!

He then mentions how Catholic leaders tend to remain silent in the face of the culture war because they don't want to become targets.

We can certainly see that Bill is right in this evaluation. The recent barrage of criticism and condemnation leveled at the Pope for his comments regarding Muslims shows that Catholics easily become targets.

Bill goes on:

To be fair (a hallmark of the traditional warrior), it is certainly true that if a religious person does wander onto the cultural battlefield, he or she better have a strong stomach, because he or she has a good chance of being demonized.

Stanley Kurtz, contributing editor for National Review Online, sums it up this way:

The fact of the matter is that the Left's [secular progressives] rhetorical attacks on conservative Christians [traditionalists] have long been more extreme, more widely disseminated, and more politically effective than whatever the Christians have been hurling back. And now that their long ostracism by the media has finally forced conservative Christians to demand redress, the Left has abandoned all rhetorical restraint.

Kurtz points to a number of examples. On April 24, 2005, the secular progressive fanatic Frank Rich, writing in the New York Times, compared conservative Christians to George Wallace, segregationists, and lynch mobs.

In a similar vein, Christopher Hedges, a former New York Times writer, produced an article in Harper's magazine called "Feeling the Hate with the National Religious Broadcasters."

O'Reilly goes on to describe how Hedges patched together a series of vitriolic statements by a few religious broadcast pundits in order to achieve the goal of selectively painting the picture that the religious right is nuts.

Bill states:

This is standard issue for secular-progressive magazine writers: dig up kooky quotes and print them without context. Any writer can do that to any subject. It's simple but off-the-chart dishonest.

O'Reilly admits that there have been some nutty statements made by the traditional side, but the media only plays up such statements big time when made by traditionalists. When a secular-progressive player uses looney rhetoric, like calling all Americans who oppose gay marriage bigots, you can be sure that most in the American mainstream media would not have a problem with that. To use a cliche', the deck is stacked.

I think that the popularity of blogs and the voices of traditional warriors who write them have given a huge voice for conservative Christian values and issues. This new media has taken over the mainstream media's former propagandistic monopolization of the news and the analysis of what the news means for (and against) America. The mainstream media is unfortunately guilty of mis-statements about issues (especially when it comes to the war on terror and the Bush administration) while, at the same time, ignoring the good that is being done and the true facts that are out there.

Want to see propaganda in action? Just watch Keith Olbermann's Countdown for just one night. The man is the looney left's secular-progressive dream!

The rise of traditional culture warriors through the new media of the blogosphere is certainly a good thing, in my view. Gone are the days when secular-progressives could get away with their vitriolic hate-spewing rhetoric without being called on it!

9/28/06 Update: Be sure to read Obi's Sister's excellent blogpost on the fact that blogs are maturing, gaining credibility and momentum as more and more people reach their personal level of disgust and distrust of MSM and look for alternative sources of information. The Holiness Habit

The Holiness Habit

Get rid of every filthy habit and all wicked conduct. Submit to God and accept the word that He plants in your hearts.
James 1:21 (GNT)

Recommended Reading
James 1:19-21

Holiness is a habit. It’s much more than that, of course. It’s a characteristic of God himself, displayed perfectly in Christ and imputed to our accounts by grace through faith. But in practical terms, holy living means daily discipline. We form habits, then they form us.

That’s why we must weed out bad habits regularly, just as we weed our yards. An untended garden soon deteriorates into a weed patch, and an untended life does the same. It requires the discipline of the hoe to produce hollyhocks in our fields and holiness in our lives.

In his book How to Say No to a Stubborn Habit, Erwin Lutzer writes: "We are responsible for our own sin—including those sins ‘which so easily beset us.’ The fact that we do something wrong habitually does not relieve us of responsibility. On the contrary, it may make the sin all the worse. So we must take personal responsibility for our own habits and not shrink from calling them sin."

Ask the Lord to help you identify "weeds" in your life, confess them, turn from them, and replace them with holy habits that produce a crop of righteousness.

The Christian must see that bad habits are ultimately spiritual issues.

On You I See The Glory

Yesterday, I watched the movie Tommy by the Who. It's been quite a long time since I had last seen it. Back in the 70's, when it was made, I think I recall that the movie was labeled as a "Rock Opera." The plot summary at this site wasn't very good or accurate (IMO). However, I located some good reviews of the film. I only had time to read a few of the 105 that are there, and so far two of them reflect some of my thoughts about the film as well. It is certainly a bizarre one...to say the least!

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
If you've ever wanted to hear Jack Nicholson sing (or try to) or marvel at the sight of Ann-Margret drunkenly cavorting in a cascade of baked beans, Tommy is the movie you've been waiting for. As it turns out, the Who's brilliant rock opera is sublimely matched to director Ken Russell's penchant for cinematic excess, and this 1975 production finds Russell at the peak of his filmmaking audacity. It's a fever-dream of musical bombast, custom-fit to the thematic ambition of Pete Townshend's epic rock drama, revolving around the titular "deaf, dumb, and blind kid" (played by Who vocalist Roger Daltrey) who survives the childhood trauma that stole his senses to become a Pinball Wizard messiah in Townshend's grandiose attack on the hypocrisy of organized religion.

The story is remarkably coherent considering the hypnotic dream-state induced by Russell's visuals. Tommy's odyssey is rendered through wall-to-wall music, each song representing a pivotal chapter in Tommy's chronology, from the bloodstream shock of "The Acid Queen" (performed to the hilt by Tina Turner) to Nicholson's turn as a well-intentioned physician, Elton John's towering rendition of "Pinball Wizard," and Daltrey's epiphanous rendition of "I'm Free." Other performers include Eric Clapton and (most outrageously) the Who's drummer Keith Moon, and through it all Russell is almost religiously faithful to Townshend's artistic vision. Although it divided critics when first released, Tommy now looks likes a minor classic of gonzo cinema, worthy of the musical genius that fueled its creation. --Jeff Shannon
(bold mine)

Yes. There were several instances of mocking Christianity, in particular, as well as religion, in general. Recall that memorable scene where all the "followers" of Tommy rebel and chant, "we're not gonna take it," and "don't want no religion."

Here's part of the lyrics:

We're not gonna take it,
Never did and never will,
Don't want no religion,
As far as we can tell!
We ain't gonna take you,
Never did and never will!
We ain't gonna take you,
We forsake you,
Gonna rape you,
Let's forget you better still!

I've got a question for my British readers. Is it true that the 70's was a time in the U.K. where religious rebellion was rampant?

Back to the film. The chanting of the disgruntled "followers" was probably a good thing during that scene because they were following a false "messiah" anyway!

Some of the other scenes against Christianity included the dislike for a girl's preacher father. The girl wanted to go and be with the false messiah, Tommy, but her Christian father didn't want her to be negatively influenced. She ended up being injured at the Tommy "messiah" gathering and suffered a huge gash on the side of her face. She ended up with a long scar on her face. I saw some symbolism in that.

I noted that when Tommy was a child, one song that was sung had lyrics that said, "he doesn't know who Jesus was or what praying is... how can he be saved? From the eternal grave?" I thought it was interesting that the Person of Jesus Christ wasn't said to be as Someone who is alive today as the Living Savior that He is. Tommy's parents placed a nativity scene on his lap. He started to feel the figurines, but then threw the whole thing to the floor. Yikes...Townshend (the writer of the film) must have a lot of animosity towards the Christian faith!

The other review that I thought was good:

Plenty weird yet compelling - and the music's great, May 25, 2005
Reviewer: Daniel Jolley "darkgenius" (Shelby, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews

Having heard about Tommy for years, I felt it was time to actually watch the movie. I had never acquired much of a sense for what the movie is about, probably because I don't think it is really possible to actually explain the film to anyone else. This is some pretty weird stuff. As the thing progressed, I had a hard time figuring out if I liked what I was seeing, whether it made any sense, etc. In the end, I must say I did enjoy the film, thanks largely to Daltrey, the music, and Ann-Margaret. What does it all mean? That's a toughie, as I'm sure the story means different things to different people. I had the sense that Tommy is supposed to be some kind of spiritual experience, and in some ways it is - maybe.

Here's my ridiculously oversimplified summary of the basic story. As a kid, Tommy is messed up pretty good, having witnessed something pretty dramatic; as a result, he becomes deaf, blind, and mute - for psychological rather than physical reasons. His mother (Ann-Margaret) and step-father try all kinds of weird cures as Tommy enters what should be his adulthood, including a visit to the holy rollers at a church that worships Marilyn Monroe and a special session with "The Acid Queen" (Tina Turner). Nothing seems to get through to him - until, of course, he happens to come across a pinball machine. Truly, that deaf, dumb, and blind kid sure plays a mean pinball, knocking the current pinball wizard (Elton John) off his pedestal. Suddenly, Tommy's family is rolling in the money, yet Tommy remains uncommunicative. When he does eventually find "awareness," he is transformed into a messiah figure, and crowds flock to him to hear his wisdom.

The film gets off to a pretty slow start, as we follow Tommy's childhood. Then Tina Turner enters the picture as The Acid Queen, and she forevermore gets the joint jumping with her electric performance. Other memorable performers include Eric Clapton, Elton John, and Jack Nicholson (who does in fact sing here). Ann-Margaret tops all of them with her performance, though, earning an Academy Award nomination for her work. It's a demanding role; alongside the acting and singing, she also has to roll around in a chocolatey, gooey mess. She may have been a little older in 1975, but Ann-Margaret definitely still had it.

The boys from the band pop in from time to time, but the story is increasingly focused on Tommy, his awakening, and his cult following. Some really obvious representations of Christianity are incorporated into the film, while, at the same time, greed and materialism are also spotlighted as false gods. Ultimately, though - thanks to a problematic ending -it is hard for me to discern the message that the filmmakers were actually trying to communicate here. I've heard that The Who's original album makes some of the more esoteric aspects of the Tommy story a little clearer.

Obviously, some individuals will not like this film at all; it's sort of an acid trip on film, vague and unsettling with its symbolism and discernible criticisms of organized religion. Others may find enlightenment of one sort or another. Most people, including me, will probably just look at this as a weird but oddly entertaining musical that leaves you scratching your head a little bit after you watch it. Of course, even if the story loses you completely, you still have plenty of great music from The Who to sit back and enjoy.

I agree about the ending. I think that people will surmise what it means according to their own belief system. It appeared that Tommy was worshipping the sun at the top of the mountain. Yet, the song lyrics playing during his trek up to the mountain relayed a different message than that. I have been singing the song's chorus in my mind all morning. I think that the lyrics can apply directly to Jesus!

Song: Listening to You / See Me Lyrics
Tommy: See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me.
See me, feel me, touch me, heal me, heal me, heal me.

Chorus: Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat.
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat.
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!

[TOMMY AND CHORUS]

Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat (heat).
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Ohhhhh, listening to you I get the music.
Gazing at you I get the heat.
Following you I climb the mountain.
I get excitement at your feet!
Right behind you I see the millions.
On you I see the glory.
From you I get opinions.
From you I get the story.
Listening to you!

One cannot gain all that from the sun up in the sky. But we can each gain such love and insight from the Son of God, Jesus Christ of the Bible!

Is Bin Laden Dead?

This certainly would be good news if it is true. According to Michele Malkin's blog, many are wondering if that gathering of Taliban leaders at a funeral is tied to this latest report of Bin Laden's demise.

The Saudis and the French appear to be looking into the reports.

Guess we will find out the truth soon enough. Stay tuned.

Lack Of Redeeming Value

When the McGreevey scandal was exposed and he was inevitably forced to resign in shame from the New Jersey governorship, I thought that he might just disappear from public life. Well, I guess we could say that he did - for two years at least. But now, we find him out there hawking his disgustingly vulgar and painfully descriptive tell-all book.

Sean Hannity kept his composure when interviewing McGreevey on Hannity and Colmes the other night. He extended a courtesy to McGreevey by reading his trashy book before the interview. But Sean mentioned that it contained far too much sexually charged and graphic information about McGreevey's gay lovers that he would rather not have known about.

Sean asked McGreevey,
"I guess maybe the question I have, as I read this book, this wife has suffered enough. One day this daughter of yours is going to read this book. Did you think about your wife and your daughter are going to read about all this one day? Your young girl? Did you think about them?"

Personally, I thought that McGreevey's response was less than disingenuous:

MCGREEVEY: Sure, of course I did, Sean. Yes. I did.

HANNITY: Don't you think that hurts them more?

MCGREEVEY: Actually, I think nothing hurt more than living through that reality, living through that pain. And hopefully, by sharing this story, they begin to understand the false place that I was at and that I accept responsibility for the pain that I caused them.

And that also I set forth how I got to this horrible place and talk about the importance of being honest, talk about the importance of being integrated, talk about the importance of being healthy.

There we have it. The pride of self and "oh poor me" syndrome. If that man genuinely wanted to avoid more pain for his family, he wouldn't have written such an awful book that his young daughter will probably read one day.

There have been hundreds of articles and blogposts about McGreevey and his book. I have read several really good ones and do not need to elaborate on them. Basically, I will just say that from the interviews and articles that I have read, McGreevey appears to lack any sense of redeeming value in his life. Yeah. It's easy to talk about pain and suffering of self and family, but to add to that pain by writing an unnecessarily sexually-obsessive tell all book that will inevitably inflict even more pain upon his family, now and in the future, just proves how confession without repentance is empty, void of redeeming value, and godless.

At Fausta's blog we see the difference between true repentance and reconciliation through the redeeming power of Jesus Christ verses McGreevey's obvious "confessional self-help and positive affirmation" spectacle. Fausta also writes, "Worse yet, McGreevey went to talk about getting in touch with "his God" (I'm being kind here and assuming he's talking of God, not any old god) and his "inner child"."

Fausta observed that in Oprah true-to-form typical style, "Rather than call him on his immorality, Oprah, moved by the honesty of it all, listened with tears in her eyes. You could almost hear Tchaikovsky's Theme from Romeo and Juliet in the background."

She nails it with this comment: "At Oprah's however, it's all happy endings and endless personal growth."

[Note: Since I haven't read the book, I cannot say for sure that McGreevey hasn't repented (meaning, not only to his family but also to God). But, based upon all the articles and interviews that I have seen and heard, it appears more than likely that he has not. Therefore, it appears to me that his book is nothing but a way to make money off of a tragic situation which must be horribly painful to his ex-wife and children. If I am incorrect about this, I will retract my statements.]

Rather than continuing with this post by adding to the well-deserved barrage of articles, T.V. clips, and blogposts disparaging McGreevey's book and sex-obsessed life, I wanted to present some men who live in the public eye, genuinely have a conscience, and use it to keep their integrity and moral values intact.

This morning, I read a few brief articles about such men in Good Housekeeping magazine. They were about several actors who really do put their families first in their lives and would never inflict such unnecessary pain upon them the way that McGreevey did.

1. Matthew Fox

The Reluctant Hero
Why we love him. We first met Fox as Charlie Salinger, the lost soul tending to his four orphaned siblings on TV's Party of Five. Now he's tending to Lost souls as Dr. Jack Shephard, a surgeon stranding on a strange island in the hit ABC series. Lucky for fans, that means plenty of wet-T-shirt moments for the 40-year-ole, six-foot-two actor. Appropriately nicknamed Foxy by his fellow castaways, Fox has two kids in real life - daughter Kyle, eight, and son Byron, four-and for nearly 20 years, he has been with his Italian-born wife, Margherita, whom he fell in love with while he was a student at Columbia University in New York City. "We're good friends and always have bee," Fox says of his spouse. "She's an amazing woman and a phenomenal mother." He's unfazewd by the fans who'd like to be marroned with him. "The sex symbol image of me - that feels like a different person," he laughs. "I'd be lying if I said it wasn't flattering. But I'm also sort of embarrassed by it." MOre important is his role as Dad. "I want my kids to respect me as a father and as a friend," he says. "I don't want them to get carried away by all this fame stuff." When it comes to being a good husband, Fox feels that love means learning another language. "The one thing I always tell my wife is 'Ti amo piu di tutto nel mondo.' It means 'I love you more than anything in the world.' I say it to her often.

2. Tim McGraw
The Country Boy

Why we love him. He wears a black hat, but he vehaves like a good guy. He's a honky-tonk hit machine, yet he croons soulful ballads like "Live Like You Were Dying." He's known as a family-oriented country star, but he flaunts a steamy sexual chemistry with superstar wife Faith Hill. No wonder McGraw, 39, is worshipped by any woman with a weakness for cowboys. (This month, he'll show off his saddle skills in the film Flicka.) As a kid, he didn't know that his biological father was baseball great Tug McGraw (who died of cancer in 2004). Now Tim is a devoted dad to daughters Gracie, nine; Maggie, eight; and Audrey, four. "When I'm not touring, all I want to do is spend time with Faith and our girls," McGraw says. "It's the best thing in the world, being a father. We just do normal things, like going swimming and making pancakes. There's nothing more important than family."

A civic-minded activist who's led fund-raising efforts for Gulf Coast hurricane relief, McGraw is also mulling a run for political office. "I'd consider it if I thought I could do some good," he said. "Wouldn't Faith make a great senator's wife?"

Yes Tim. You'd make a great senator and Faith would be a lovely senator's wife!

3. Denzel Washington
The Superstar

Why we love him. Years before George Clooney shot to stardom playing a TV doctor, Washington got pulses racing as Dr. Philip Chandler on St. Elsewhere. Now a two-time Oscar winner who earns $20 million per picture, the 51-year-old actor has only gotten sexier as his fame has increased. He's a unique combination of old-fashioned charm and heart-stopping magnetism and can play anything from a true hero (in Inside Man) to a supervillain (in Training Day). but he plays his favorite part at home with his wife of 23 years, Pauletta, and their four children. His eldest, John David, is notw a pro football player for the St. Louis Rams. "I tell him, 'You used to be known as my son; now I'm getting to be known as your father.' Nothing makes me happier." He is also the national spokesperson for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America; growing up in Mount Vernon, New York, he spent many afternoons at his local Boys Club. Now he's cowritten an inspirational book, A Hand to Guide Me, about his mentor at the Boys Club. "I believe we miss our marks from time to time," he says. "Without a certain push in the right direction, we might never find the path we were meant to follow." The big screen isn't where Washington wants to be remembered most; these days, this family man has diffferent priorities: "Twenty years ago, acting was my life. Acting now is making a living...I don't take myself too seriously."

Truly admirable men...all of them!

A Question Explained

In yesterday's edition of the North County Times, a Faith and Values page letter writer asked for an explanation regarding Cain's wife. She wanted to know how Cain could marry a relative without committing incest.

Here is a copy of her letter:

Who did Cain lay with?

I read the Faith & Value Letters with great amusement. The evolutionists and the creationists will never find agreement, but they do keep trying. I have one question that no one has been able to answer, and I have wondered about it all my life. Perhaps someone out there can explain this to me. Two Bibles that I have say that Cain took a wife.

King James Version, "And Cain knew his wife."

New English Bible, "Then Cain lay with his wife."

Where did she come from if Adam and Eve were the first and only people created by God on this earth? The Bible says he went to the land of Nod, but how did those people get there?

Who begat them? If Eve was the mother of all who lived, then Cain must have been laying with his mother or his sister. Then Cain's son, Enoch, laid with his wife. Where did she come from? Nod also? And how did she get there?

Somehow there had to have been some incest going on in order for these men to begat children. Explanation, please.

My letter in response:

The Bible does prohibit incest (Lev. 18:6) and with good reason. Incestuous marriages often produce genetically defective children. So how can this be reconciled?

First, there were no genetic imperfections at the beginning of the human race. God created a genetically perfect Adam (Gen. 1:27). Genetic defects resulted from the Fall and only occurred gradually over long periods of time. Further, there was no command in Cain's day not to marry a close relative. This command (Lev. 18) came thousands of years later in Moses' day (c. 1500 B.C.). Finally, since the human race began with a single pair (Adam and Eve), Cain had no one else to marry except a close female relative (sister or niece). Additional information about life spans at http://talkwisdom.blogspot.com/.
(Reference: When Critics Ask by Norman Geisler & Thomas Howe)

Geisler and Howe covered another question that often arises from skeptics:

How could people live over 900 years?

Problem: Adam "lived nine hundred and thirty years" (Gen. 5;5), Methuselah lived "nine hundred and sixty-nine years" (Gen. 5:27), and the average age of those who lived out their normal life span was over 900 years of age. Yet even the Bible recognizes that most people live only 70 or 80 years before natural death occurs (Ps. 90:10).

Solution: First of all, the reference in Psalm 90 is to Moses' time (1400s B.C.) and later, when longevity had decreased to 70 or 80 years for most, though Moses himself lived 120 years (Deut. 34:7).

Some have suggested that these "years" are really only months, which would reduce 900 years to the normal life span of 80 years. However, this is implausible for two reasons. First, there is no precedent in the Hebrew OT for taking the word "year" to mean "month." Second, since Mahalalel had children when he was only 65 (Gen. 5:15), and Cainan had children when he was 70 (Gen. 5:12), this would mean they were less than six years old - which is not biologically possible.

Others suggest that these names represent family lines or clans that went on for generations before they died out. However, this does not make sense for a number of reasons. First, some of these names (e.g., Adam, Seth, Enock, Noah) are definitely individuals whose lives are narrated in the text (Gen. 1-9). Second, family lines do no "beget" family lines by different names. Third, neither do family lines "die," as each of these individuals did (cf. 5:5, 9, 11, etc.). Fourth, the reference to having "sons and daughters" (5:4) does not fit the clan theory.

Consequently, it seems best to take these as years (though they were lunar years of 12 x 30 = 360 days) for several reasons: (1) First of all, life was later shortened to 120 years as a punishment from God (Gen. 6:3). (2) Life span decreased gradually after the flood from the 900s (Gen. 5) to the 600s, to the 400s, to the 200s. (3) Biologically, there is no reason humans could not live hundreds of years. Scientists are more baffled by aging and death than by longevity. (4) The Bible is not alone in speaking of hundreds of years life spans among ancients. There are also records from ancient Greek and Egyptian times that speak of humans living hundreds of years.

This information gives credence to the fact that man was originally created by God to live forever. But when sin entered the world, so did the death penalty. When Adam and Eve sinned in the Garden of Eden, they didn't immediately die physically. That came much later. However, their spiritual death occurred immediately and was evident by the fact that they no longer "walked with God," but tried to run and hide from Him.

Mankind has been running and hiding ever since! But Jesus' sacrificial death at the cross on our behalf reconciles us back unto God spiritually. We still have the price to pay for sin with physical death, but with repentance and acceptance of Jesus Christ as our personal Lord and Savior, we will not die the second death of spiritual, eternal separation from God.

While typing this, I am reminded of a blogpost from 2005 that revealed something astonishing. It is more evidence that the Bible truly is divinely inspired and a miraculous Book.

I hope you will take the time to read it. You won't be disappointed with the insight you will gain from it!

The Great Collision

When our depravity meets His divinity...

It's a great collision! *

Quite the concept to realize...isn't it?

P.S. *I do not know the author of this quote...do you?

It seems the quote should be:

"When our depravity meets His divinity, it's a beautiful collision."

Just found this:

One such guy is David Crowder. David Crowder is the pastor of music and arts at University Baptist Church (UBC) in Waco, Texas.

I was just writing a brief blog entry on Romans 8. Part of what I was touching on is how all things work together for the good of those who love God. I was reflecting on how all things include our failures and our faults. It includes our sin and suffering. All of it is good for those who love God.

As I kept thinking on that I recalled something that Crowder wrote about the intersection of depravity and divinity. In commenting on his latest release Crowder wrote

“It is the divine and the depraved interacting and it seems our feet lift from the ground for a second. We rise from our condition. When our depravity meets his divinity it is a beautiful collision.”

This fit in wonderfully with the theme of all things working together for our good. It's the wisdom and glory of a great God that allows our depravity and his divinity to meet and use it for good.

My Rant Against That Tyrant, Hugo

Did you catch Hugo Chavez' "speech" before the U.N. this morning? What a joke! I'd laugh if it wasn't also such a scary thought to realize that he is the president of a South American country.

That "sulfur" smell he mentioned? Must be a foretaste of where he'll probably spend eternity. What a special touch it was to see him make the sign of the cross. He's as much a true Catholic as Hitler was a true Christian.

I thought that Condi Rice's answer to "not dignify" such an unruly man's gibberish with a reaction to his crazy rant was right on. When a head of state acts that way, and says such nasty and untrue things about the president in the very country he is visiting, it indicates to me that Chavez' comments are as irrelevant as Cindy Sheehan's.

Speaking of Sheehan, isn't it comical that she embraced this dictator and was kissy kissy with a man who would have probably put her in prison (or worse) if she had said such things about Chavez, in his presence and country, that Chavez had said about Bush at the U.N.? Not that she would, mind you. Her mind is as gone as his.

Isn't it ironic that Chavez gets to come here, have the freedom of speech 'right' to bash our president in front of the cameras and U.N., but would never, ever, allow the same thing done towards him in his own country? He'd have someone who ever dared to do so taken out in a New York minute.

But that's how radical leftists think. Their minds are ass-backwards when it comes to rationality. What's O.K. to say about another leader is not O.K. to say about them. A person like Chavez obviously lacks any sense of decorum or dignity. His raging rant just shows what a hate-spewing, foaming at the mouth wolf he is. No need for "sheeps clothing" cause his hate is just out there, vicious and brutal for all the world to see.

In contrast, President Bush's speech was eloquent, dignified and right on target. Of course he had to be "politically correct" and not use such accurate terminology as "radical Islamofacists" to describe the terrorists. Wouldn't want to upset the Muslims the way the pope did, now would we?

But radical Muslims get to spew their hate freely and openly on the streets of Britain without any fear or threat of dire consequences...such as...the brutal and savage beheading of a person like Nick Berg.

Chavez and Ahmadinejad....such a happy go lucky couple! What makes us think that we could actually ever trust or believe a word they say??

At least Mahmoud wasn't observed to have had a "halo" around his head during his ridiculous rambling rant of a speech like he did last year. If he did, we may have been concerned and finally led to believe that he must be an agent for the Anti-Christ! (O.K....with that said, now I'm sure to get scolded for that comment from GM and his ilk...)

What's really scary is that people at the U.N. actually applauded when Chavez was done! Yikes!

Hey...the good news is that he wants the U.N. to move its headquarters to Venezuela. I say good riddance!!

The corruption at the U.N. is notorious and I wish that the U.S. would kick them out and save us taxpayers of having to fund such a dishonest, depraved, untrustworthy, morally perverted, debased and useless group of do-nothings!

More to come...

Going to hunt for more links about the worthless U.N. and the sulfur stenched Chavez.

Share your rant...

Christians Fight Against Indoctrination and Win

We are often told that there is nothing that can be done to legally fight and win against the homosexual agenda indoctrination that is going on in our nations' schools. But that belief is not true. The following examples demonstrate that when Christians are brave enough to stand up for their beliefs and not cower to the secular humanistic views being forced upon our school and college aged children, that such blatant indoctrination efforts can be legally thwarted.

ADF Attorney Helps Student Take a Stand for "Fairness"

Many leftist activists and their allies (willing or accidental) seem to live by the credo: "Free speech for me, but not for thee." Today's story is another example.

In Wilmington, North Carolina, ADF Senior Legal Counsel David Cortman has filed a preliminary injunction on behalf of Benjamin Arthurs, a student who was suspended for promoting the "Day of Truth" at his tax-funded high school in Dunn, North Carolina this past April 27th.

On the "Day of Truth," Ben was told that his Christian message t-shirt was "prohibited" even though the school dress code does not prohibit religious clothing. Ben was also told that his distribution of "Day of Truth" cards was also forbidden because he would be "pushing his religion on others."(Ironically, as you can see in the picture with David and Ben, the school's "character trait" for the week he was suspended was "fairness").

Prior to filing the lawsuit, ADF attorneys had sent a letter to school and district officials advising that they had violated Ben's constitutional rights. School officials allowed the "Day of Silence" which promotes homosexual behavior, to go on without incident, the day before at the school.

David Cortman says: "Christian students are entitled to the same free speech rights as non-religious classmates. Students participating in the Day of Silence, which supports the homosexual agenda, were permitted observe the event by distributing flyers and remaining silent throughout the school day. Yet a student who peacefully expressed an opposite perspective during non-instructional time received punishment. This is a classic case of viewpoint discrimination."

You can read a copy of the complaint filed in Arthurs v. Sampson County Board of Education at Arthurs Complaint.

A copy of the motion for preliminary injunction is available at Arthurs Injunction.

We will keep you posted on this case in the days and weeks ahead. In the meantime, please continue to pray for Ben, and the many other courageous individuals, who have taken a compassionate stand to share the Truth with those trapped in homosexual behavior.

2. Gay-Straight Alliances Deemed Unacceptable for N.C. Schools

A North Carolina school district has successfully implemented a policy banning student clubs based on sexual activity or sexual orientation, the Salisbury Post reported.

Perhaps you wonder why we must fight against homosexual clubs, policies, lawsuits, and indoctrination techniques. The following article shares some good reasons.

Another BIG Win for Religious Freedom...This Time at Georgia Tech...

Orit Sklar and Ruth Malhorta knew that their First Amendment right to free speech was being denied. (See ADF News Alert, March 28, 2006).

These two courageous students, with the help of David French, director of ADF's Center for Academic Freedom and ADF litigation counsel David Hacker, filed a lawsuit against Georgia Tech's comprehensive student conduct guidelines (distributed to all incoming freshmen) that regulate "permissible" speech and expression. The complaint claimed that the guidelines have been used against religious and conservative individuals and organizations on campus.

In addition, school officials had also implemented a program aimed at indoctrinating students in what the officials deemed to be the "correct" interpretation of religious texts with regard to homosexual behavior. The program, called "Safe Space," promoted the beliefs of religions that favor the practice of homosexual behavior, while denigrating those that oppose it.

After these two young ladies filed their lawsuit, they underwent unbelievable persecution, name calling, and harrassment from radical leftists and their allies; but Ruth and Orit knew in their hearts, they were right, and stuck to their guns despite the ongoing attacks.

And their perseverance has been rewarded.

On Monday, August 14th, a federal judge ordered the restrictive speech code repealed. He prohibited the school from changing its new student speech policy without court approval for the next five years. In addition, the judge denied Georgia Tech's request that the case be dismissed, and ADF will proceed with the other parts of the case.

Please continue to pray for this case, and especially for Orit and Ruth, who still find themselves experiencing incredible personal attacks for their brave stand.

We will keep you posted on further developments in the weeks ahead.

4. Gay-Activist Intimidation Tactics Increasing

Excerpt:

"These are professionals [e.g. NARTH] whose job it is to do research and help clients that want to pursue change, if that's what they want," Chambers said. "These gay activists are saying, basically, that everyone should not have the right to choose their own path. That's un-American."

The intimidation, he said, is being done under the guise of "tolerance."

"The truth is, tolerance has come to mean something very different for gay activists," Chambers said. "What tolerance means to them is that we need to go out of our way to not just accept them, but approve of what they do. But tolerance is not a two-way street for them -- they neither accept nor respect our views on these issues."

LaBarbera said the fact that thousands of people have left homosexuality and are living contented lives doesn't seem to affect those who believe homosexuality cannot be changed.

In the end, he said such intimidation is the very definition of irony.

"Usually the people who are screaming the loudest about tolerance," he said, "are the most intolerant of all."

The way that I see it is that either the homosexual extremists and the ACLU will continue, and succeed, in their onslaught of gay propaganda to transform America from its true morals, values, and ethics; or Christians will step up the effort to fight against this wave of destructive brain-washing. Take a look at what is currently at stake in California. The flurry of bad bills designed to promote the homosexual agenda will be decided upon within the next few weeks. When bills such as these are approved of, and (God forbid!) passed, then the hate-spewing leftists like Rosie O'Donnell think they have the power to falsely claim and say absolutely anything that they want against Christians and their beliefs.

The ramifications of turncoat Arnold's signing of the terrible SB 1441 bill here in California will eventually lead us down a path where most Christians will not want to go. Gratefully, the Alliance Defense Fund will challenge this horrible bill.

Karen England of the Capitol Resource Institute writes:

Since the governor signed SB 1441 into law last week, we have received many phone calls from concerned parents wondering whether this will affect their children’s plans for college. After consulting with our friends in the legal community, we want to update you on how this new law will affect California students.

The exact ramifications of SB 1441 are still unclear.

However, based upon past precedent, the legislature’s analysis and the current political climate, we believe that it is safe to assume that the effects of this new law will be far-reaching. Based on current legal precedent, it is not far- fetched to assume that proponents of this new law will argue that any school, business or other organizations receiving state funding will be affected. The legislative analysis of this bill states that, “Because Government Code Section 11135 [code amended by SB 1441] covers not only the state but also state agencies and any program or activity at the local level that receives funding from the state, the impact of this bill is both wide-ranging and deep.”

Equality California, the homosexual activists group and sponsor of SB 1441, claims that “SB 1441 protects all Californians who utilize public services such as police and fire protection, financial aid, social services and food stamps.” We believe that in a legal challenge, proponents of this law would argue that any organization that receives any type of state funding would be prohibited from “discriminating” against homosexuals, bisexuals, transgenders, etc. By tying state funding to anti-discrimination laws, homosexual activists will be able to argue that such funding should be withdrawn from any recipient that “discriminates.” Because fire and police protection are specifically mentioned as being prohibited from discrimination, it is unclear whether that means they are also prohibited from providing services to organizations that do discriminate (churches, private schools).

Our friends with Alliance Defense Fund and Pacific Justice Institute have both expressed a desire to challenge this outrageous law and defend the religious liberties of Californians. As defenders of religious liberty, these organizations will argue that the new anti-discrimination laws do not apply to organizations, including private universities, that uphold their sincerely-held religious beliefs.

One way that you can help stem the negative impact of this law is by supporting legislation next year that will seek to add a religious exemption to the government code affected by this law. Several pro-family legislators are preparing to introduce a bill to add such an exemption as soon the new legislative session begins in December.

This law will most likely be tied up in litigation for several years. In the meantime, students should go ahead and apply to college, just as they have planned. We will keep you updated on the latest developments in this battle for religious freedom.

Just as America, Israel and free countries everywhere are in a fight against the ideology of radical Islamic extremists who want to kill us from outside and inside our borders, so too, the ideology of radical homosexual extremists want to kill our children's moral values, freedom of religious speech, freedom of association, and the Judeo-Christian values handed down to us by God through His Word, the Bible.

This is the current struggle in the battle of ideas that we are in and our children and grandchildren's right to all the freedoms mentioned above are at stake.

I pray that Christians will get their heads out of the sand on these issues, rise up, speak out, and challenge this onslaught of perversion that is currently being allowed to permeate our culture under the guise of "safe schools," and "tolerance."

This so-called "tolerance" mantra being shoved down the throats of our children is not tolerance at all. "Tolerance" as defined by these groups is the adamant, "one-way street kind" that leads to, and has as its goal , total and unequivocal homosexual behavior acceptance and promotion, and indoctrination.

Is that the kind of America that you want your children to live in?

God forbid!

So do something about it...NOW!
MAKE 2 CALLS TO ARNOLD

Sept. 18 update from CCF President Randy Thomasson

California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is using a poll to decide whether to sign the remaining school indoctrination bills on his desk.
When you call the Governor’s State Capitol office in Sacramento, the recording asks whether you support or oppose AB 606 and AB 1056. "Legislating by polls" is no substitute for morality. Yet this is your real-life opportunity to WIN FOR MORAL VALUES THIS ELECTION YEAR.

Do your part right now.

Please help Arnold’s poll result in a FLOOD OF OPPOSITION to these terrible school indoctrination bills. Let your heart-felt opposition to AB 606 and AB 1056 -- which would teach children as young as kindergarten to regard transsexuality, bisexuality, and homosexuality as good and natural and maybe even for them -- motivate you to action.

Please make two calls right now, first to oppose AB 606, then to oppose AB 1056. If you follow CCF’s simple directions, each call could take less than 15 seconds to register your vote.

1. To oppose AB 606, which would yank state funds from any school district that doesn’t adequately promote the state's “model policy” promoting transsexuality, bisexuality and homosexuality in grades as young as kindergarten:

Call 916-445-2841

Press 1 for English (or 2 for Spanish)

Press 2 for Legislation

Press 2 for AB 606

Press 2 to OPPOSE AB 606

2. To oppose AB 1056, which would spend $250,000 in taxpayer dollars to create 10 “tolerance” schools, which will mandate that all students support transsexuality, bisexuality, and homosexuality:

Call 916-445-2841

Press 1 for English (or 2 for Spanish)

Press 2 for Legislation

Press 5 for AB 1056

Press 2 to OPPOSE AB 1056

If you get confused, just call back and listen to the entire recording and follow the prompts.

If you want to talk with a living representative of the Governor’s staff, call a third time. But instead of pressing 2 for Legislation, press 7 to wait for a representative to pick up the phone.

Get the new Action Flyer: Campaign for Children and Families (CCF) has posted our updated Action Flyer for you to print and distribute in your church, neighborhood, or workplace.

Please download the Action Flyer today, and distribute it this week and this coming weekend. Time is running out -- Governor Schwarzenegger has a Sept. 30 deadline to sign or veto bills.

Love In Its Highest Form

In the Contrast Between Pharoah's and Job's Heart thread, Limpy99 said the following:

"Your philosophy seems to be if God said it, then I will follow it, and that's fine for you. And if I'm worng on that, feel free to correct me. Mine is different; if anyone or anything wants my respect, they have to earn it. I expect I'd have to earn theirs as well. That may sound narcissitic, I certainly don't mean it that way. Such approaches obviously lead to different takes on Job; such is life."

In response to this portion of his comment, I stated the following:

Wanting the kind of respect that you are looking for from God is sort of like the pot telling the potter how it should be made.

Isa 64:8 But now, O LORD, thou [art] our father; we [are] the clay, and thou our potter; and we all [are] the work of thy hand.

Jeremiah's verse shows us that sometimes the "pot" needs refashioning.

Jer 18:4 And the vessel that he made of clay was marred in the hand of the potter: so he made it again another vessel, as seemed good to the potter to make [it].

Now, I know that GMpilot will probably come along and say something like, "since the pot was marred in the hand of the potter, it's his fault."

But notice. The pot was not marred at the hand of the potter, it states that it was marred in; the symbolism meaning that the pot (nation of Israel) was marred because of the freewill choice they made to sin and disobey God's Word. But despite that, they were still in God's hands of protection to fulfill the promises, if, and when, they would repent and turn back to Him. The same could be said of each individual today, who turns to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

Rom 9:21 Hath not the potter power over the clay, of the same lump to make one vessel unto honour, and another unto dishonour?

Rom 9:22 [What] if God, willing to shew [his] wrath, and to make his power known, endured with much longsuffering the vessels of wrath fitted to destruction:

Rom 9:23 And that he might make known the riches of his glory on the vessels of mercy, which he had afore prepared unto glory,

Rom 9:24 Even us, whom he hath called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

Elsewhere, we read that God is not a respecter of persons.

Rom 2:11 For there is no respect of persons with God.

Proverbs tells us why.

Pro 24:23 These [things] also [belong] to the wise. [It is] not good to have respect of persons in judgment.

Pro 28:21 To have respect of persons [is] not good: for for a piece of bread [that] man will transgress.

Justice requires that those who do wrong receive "for the wrong which they had done."

Col 3:25 But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

1Pe 1:17 And if ye call on the Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your sojourning [here] in fear:

The purpose for discipline.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Once born again, believers cannot be snatched out of his hands.

Our thoughts are not His thoughts.

His ways are not our (or my) ways.

This is why the cross of Christ is often a stumbling block to non-believers.

Isa 55:8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

The reason this is so is because we are separated spiritually from Him because of the Fall.

1Cr 2:14 But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know [them], because they are spiritually discerned.

It is only when we are each individually born again in Christ that our thoughts begin to match up, so to speak, with His. Prior to this, much of God's Word can seem very foreign in the eyes of the non-believer. Without the guidance of the Holy Spirit, who reveals the truth of the Scriptures to us, it's almost like we are reading another language without the training for full understanding of what we are reading.

I have found that many agnostics, atheists, and skeptics often claim to have "read the whole Bible." But what have they gleaned from the Word?

Instead of comprehending the love of God from the poetic sections, and the salvation promises of the gospel through Jesus Christ, they point out perceived "errors" ad nauseum that don't affect the truth of the gospel at all.

Most of the so-called "errors" are easily solved with continued research and study. They often blame God for all the evil and suffering in the world. They forget why evil entered into the world in the first place. If God were to "wipe out all evil" so we could have heaven on earth now, then the people who aren't saved would be wiped out right along with it. This is why God is longsuffering, as believers are, because like Him, we desire that no one would perish.

But the hardened hearts of some will refuse to repent. They will ultimately get what they want. Separation from God for all eternity.

There are Bible difficulties, but no errors. The error is often in our own fallible judgments and/or understandings of what we are reading. This is why the Holy Spirit's leading is crucial! It is also why we need God's Word as the ultimate source for absolute truth. Scripture interprets Scripture. Sola Scriptura takes away any denominational human-made traditions that could skew what the Bible is telling us. We have archaeological finds that support what the Bible has revealed. The more recent finds have crushed the scoffing of skeptics who, hundreds of years ago, felt that the Bible had an error regarding the existence of certain peoples or places back then. The Bible's accuracy is proved correct and its truth is reiterated by what emerges from excavations in the Holy Land.

There is no doubt that the Bible is a miraculous book! There is none like it on earth! For some, it is held in the highest regard. For others, it is a book to be scorned. Why is that?

I think that Charles Stanley has identified one of the main reasons why non-believers often hold the Bible in contempt. They don't understand what is meant when Christians reveal that "God is love." They can't believe that God loves each of us unconditionally, with an agape kind of love that man often becomes confused about. The range of questions that come to mind shows this confusion. Questions like:

1. If God is love then why is there suffering in the world?

The answer can be found in Scripture. Jesus tells us to expect trouble.

(Jesus speaking) Jhn 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

The list could go on and on. But answers to many questions like that one can be found in Scripture for those who are willing to research and find them. However, once the answers are found, sometimes a person sees them as not "living up to an individual's expectations of who God should be."

For instance. To love unconditionally is often considered unreasonable to the worldly. They can't understand that concept, especially when it might involve discipline as correction. You see, God is a God of love and He is also a God of justice. Justice demands a penalty for sin. Some see this as a contradiction. But there is no contradiction between justice and unconditional love.

Charles Stanley pointed out something that I hadn't realized before.

The Bible demonstrates anger, judgment, and eternal separation for the unrepentant wicked, but no where does it say God doesn't love the wicked. Oh yes, God hates the sin that the wicked (and all of us) do, but he doesn't hate the person. He wants all to come to repentance! If he hated you, non-believer wicked person, would he still have his arms stretched out to you welcoming you back in reconciliation when you repent?

Stanley said:

There is a purpose for God's final judgment.
For believers, it is an evaluation of works done on earth to establish rewards. Salvation is not affected in this.

For non-believers, there is the Great White Throne Judgment whereas the degree of punishment occurs for the wicked. If they got away with it, that's not justice.

Love and justice is God's character. God, in his love, determines the degree of punishment. God doesn't send anyone to hell. Willful sinning and rejection of God's love does that.

Some may ask, "Why doesn't God change them?"

When a person who rejects God and His offer of salvation through Christ is dying, do they ever desire repentance and to be with God? No. Just as in Revelation, those who recognize that the wrath of God is about to fall upon them still hide, try to defy God and want the rocks to fall on them. No indication of repentance there.

A person's non-repentant character can become fixed. In his/her dying hour, they have the attitude of cursing and defying God.

Why doesn't God fix them?

We'll find out all the answers when we get to the other side of heaven. For now, we know that free will has a lot to do with it.

2Pe 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

Jhn 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.

What about the willful sin of believers? God disciplines us. We need to face and deal with that.

How do we live?

Do we focus on our kids performing in a certain way? All we can do is pray, wish for the best, hope they will follow God's Word, and even when they fall into sin, love them unconditionally. This is extremely difficult, but God puts up with us! We are to love them no matter what! Remember the prodigal son...

Stanley also shared this about false accusations hurled at us for our witnessing efforts:

You and I don't have to give an account for false accusations made by non-believers against us when sharing the truth of God's Word. You and I don't live for their approval. We live for the approval of God. That is what it is all about.

Stanley discussed the fear of commitment.

Have you ever genuinely loved someone? By this, I mean to the extent that you don't ever have to wonder about it? You just know it! No question about it!
This is unconditional love.

Many people marry someone to change them.
That is their first mistake! If you've never learned to love someone
unconditionally then you've failed at life! However, when you do love
unconditionally, you'll know its there and you will thank God for it!

That sums up the faith and hope of the Christian believer. We know God's
love for us is there! His love is unconditional!

But sometimes, a person suffers at the hands of an abusive (or lack of an) earthly father. That makes them question the reality of God the Father's love.

I (Charles Stanley) mentally and intellectually understood God the Father's love, but didn't emotionally believe it. (Stanley explained that his father had died when he was age 5 which created a gap where he couldn't feel the genuine love of an earthly father in his life.)

But when he finally realized God's unconditional love in his heart and emotions, it changed his whole attitude. Many, unfortunately, never feel that in a relationship in life. But feeling the unconditional love of God in your heart and emotions can overcome the lack of love from an earthly father, or, even the lack of love in a
marriage.

The point is that no human being can meet all of our needs and love us as God does! If all your love is wrapped up in a person, there is going to be a vacuum in your heart and in your life; especially when they die.

This is why the agape love of God, and the agape love for God cannot be filled in any other way. We can emulate agape love, but we cannot surpass the ultimate, highest form of God's love for us. He demonstrated this through Jesus Christ at the cross.

1Jo 4:10 Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.

Because of sin, we are dead to things in God. However, He still loves us! Being born again in Christ brings us alive again to His Word and commandments.

God is the source of love.

1Jo 3:1

Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not.

1Jo 3:2
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

1Jo 3:14
We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not [his] brother abideth in death.

1Jo 3:15
Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer: and ye know that no murderer hath eternal life abiding in him.
1Jo 3:16

Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.

Contrast Between Pharoah's and Job's Heart

The "hardening of Pharoah's heart" in Exodus is often a point of contention used by skeptics to vilify the God of the Bible. In my explanations and suggestions to read commentary about this portion of Scripture, I have noticed that the true message is often missed by non-believers simply because it is not an answer that appeals to their particular mindset. This is precisely what I saw happening during a written conversation that I am currently having with a skeptic.

The remainder of this post includes quoted portions of the commentary that he disliked.

2. How foolish it is for us to challenge God or the decisions of God when we are not in the same league, not even close to it.

3. The minute we say concerning God that He is not fair, we are declaring that there is unrighteousness with God. God forbid.

B. God said to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion upon whom I will have compassion."

1. Mercy and compassion are not rights that we deserve or have coming.

2. They are favors bestowed.

3. That is why God can show mercy to whom ever He pleases.

4. God is sort of saying, "I am God I can do as I please." And you know what? He is quite right.

Pharoah's heart didn't even need extra hardening...he had enough of it on his own! (Kinda reminds me of someone I know!) But the fact remains that God had a purpose in Pharoah's "hardening of the heart."

C. God said Pharoah, "For this purpose have I raised you up that that I might show My power in thee that My name might be declared through all the earth."

1. God desired to put the fear of God and His people on the nations of the earth so He hardened the heart of Pharoah to pursue the children of Israel so that He might destroy the Egyptian army in the sea.

2. When the nations heard what God did to the Egyptian power, they all feared the power of God.

We can see from the above portion of the commentary, that God can work his ultimate purposes through the hardening of hearts of some. Pharoah had more than enough miracles and opportunities to believe in the God of Moses. But he chose to rebel and battle against Moses' God. For this, he experienced several judgments. We could view these as warnings from God to repent. But Pharoah wasn't about to repent any time soon. In fact, God knew that he never would. Therefore, his rebellious heart was used as an object lesson in biblical history as well as for God's eternal purposes.

D. If God has mercy on whoever He pleases, and hardens the heart of whoever He pleases, how can he find fault if He has hardened my heart to the gospel, how could I resist His will?

1. Again the insinuation is, "That isn't fair that God should harden a man's heart and then judge him for having a hard heart."

2. Again, who am I to judge God as to fairness, I do not know all the facts. My knowledge comes only from my limited observation, and incomplete understanding of the facts.

We see as through a glass darkly, and can only see part of the puzzle this side of heaven. I'm not claiming that I know all the purposes of God, but I do see and understand the purposes that He has revealed in His written Word; especially through His Living Word, Jesus Christ.

Skeptics often feel that they have the right to question God and His purposes. That is "their purpose," so to speak. They can be considered as the type of people who disses and challenges God for (what they perceive as) his "felonies" instead of humbly accepting that He is God and they are not.

Take note of Job's responses to all the problems he had (see book of Job). In the commentary, we get a glimpse of Job's attitude towards God:

JOB 33:13 Why dost thou strive against him? for he giveth not account of any of his matters.

1. God does not owe you or me any explanation for the things that He does, and it is the height of impertinence to challenge Him.

2. Who am I to demand that God give to me a reason for His actions?

3. God said to Job,

JOB 40:2 Shall he that contends with the Almighty instruct [him]? he that reproveth God, let him answer it.

JOB 40:8 Will you also disannul my judgment? will you condemn me, that you may be righteous?

4. Dare you to say or think that you are more righteous than God?

If you go to the very beginning of Job, we see how (and why) all the affliction upon Job started.

Job 1:1 There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name [was] Job; and that man was perfect and upright, and one that feared God, and eschewed evil.

Skipping down to verse 6:

Job 1:6 Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan came also among them.

Job 1:7 And the LORD said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Job 1:8 And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that [there is] none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil?

Job 1:9 Then Satan answered the LORD, and said, Doth Job fear God for nought?

Job 1:10 Hast not thou made an hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

Job 1:11 But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face.

Job 1:12 And the LORD said unto Satan, Behold, all that he hath [is] in thy power; only upon himself put not forth thine hand. So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.

The verses in bold show the spiritual battle that was going on. Did you notice the bolded verses? Satan's challenge was, 'does Job fear God for nothing?' God's servant Job was used as an object lesson too; but with the triumph of obedience as the result. Satan (and, apparently Job's friends and wife) wanted Job to "curse God and die."

Whereas, God knew that Job's faithfulness wasn't dependant upon "all that he had" in a materialistic sense; nor even dependant upon "all he loved" in fact, because we see that family members died. His faith was stronger than that. He also was strong in humility, faithfulness, and reverence ("fear") despite illness and even death of family members! Job demonstated true, steadfast faith even in the midst of much suffering, pain and loss.

Satan, on the other hand, misjudged Job's faithfulness. He thought that in Job's afflictions, Job would "curse thee (God) to thy face." He also thought that the loss of material possessions and the death of loved ones would shake his faith and make him turn away from the LORD. But Job proved Satan wrong! His obedience and steadfast faith proved that such tools are the answer to defeating "the wiles of the devil."

Despite all that Job went through, it is important to note that Job didn't experience the worst of pain and loss. God the Father gave His Son, Jesus Christ, who suffered the worst pain imaginable, for our sakes. It wasn't only the physical suffering that he endured, it was the spiritual separation from the Father as he took on the sins of the world.

Even Job didn't have to suffer that.

When you keep the whole message of the Gospel in mind, the suffering, wars, deaths and consequences for disobedience make perfect sense. If it were not for the sacrificial death of Jesus on the cross, we would be separated from God forever...all of us.

Thus, with the whole message of the Gospel in mind, we see that confession, repentance, mercy, grace and love are purposed by God for our benefit.

I know that skeptics will not believe all of this, but I, personally, am certain of it.

Why am I certain?

Because I know the answer that is revealed through the Bible to Jesus' question, "Who do you say that I am?"

What’s Done Is Done

It is good for me that I have been afflicted, that I may learn Your statutes. Psalm 119:71

1 Samuel 22:16-23

The Chicago Tribune reported that on March 3, 1995, a 38-year-old man walking to his job decided to take a shortcut across eight lanes of the Tri-State Tollway. After making it across the four northbound lanes, the wind blew off his hat it went back into the lanes he had just crossed. When he tried to retrieve it, he was struck by an 18-wheeler and killed.

Life is strung together by choices. Like pearls on a thread, our choices are linked one to another until the strand of our life is complete. Every time we come to a fork or crossroads in life, the choice we make eliminates those we could have made. And the results are undoable. When we make the right choice, that’s good. But when we make the wrong choice, what’s done is done. It can be forgiven, but not changed. When David was running from Saul, a village that gave him assistance was later massacred by the king. David no doubt grieved the rest of his life over choosing to endanger those innocent people. If you have made a choice that led to sorrowful consequences, accept God’s forgiveness and resolve to learn from your mistake.

What’s done in life is done. But that doesn’t mean it has to be done again.

9/11 Survivor: Sense of Urgency to Share Gospel

In July of 2004, I posted a link to a website that is dedicated to debunking the myths and wild accusations concerning 9/11. Unfortunately, conspiracy theorists abound, and many times, they just get it wrong. I think that the above website link may help to dispel falsehoods from fact. There are nine pages, but it might be worth it to take the time and go through them so that you will be more informed and able to discern truth from error.

In memory of all those who lost their lives on that terrible day, I would like to share what Joy Shepard told us at our 2004 Easter sunrise service. She is a survivor of the twin towers attack.

Joy was on the 61st floor of the second tower that was hit. At the time the first plane hit the first tower, someone came on the loudspeaker and told everyone to stay where they were. The spokesperson said that only the first tower was hit and everyone was safe in the second tower. Joy heard what she described as "a little voice" telling her to get out of the tower. She decided to ignore the spokesperson on the loudspeaker and listen to that little voice. She headed out towards the elevator. When she got there, it was very crowded, and one person said, "Come on, we have room for one more." Joy again heard that little voice to not go on the elevator. She headed towards the stairs and started down with a group of people. While they were going down, the second plane hit several floors above them in the second tower. Everyone was knocked to the ground and several tumbled down the staircase. Several were injured, but they helped each other up and continued down the stairs. Joy, being a devout Christian, started saying the Lord's prayer out loud.

Our Father
Who art in heaven
Hallowed be thy Name
Thy Kingdom come
Thy will be done
On earth, as it is in heaven
Give us this day
Our daily bread
And forgive us our trespasses
As we forgive those
Who trespass against us
And lead us not into temptation
But deliver us from evil

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, now and forever, Amen.

Many of the people in the group heading down the stairs joined in saying the prayer.

Next, Joy recited Psalm 23:

The LORD is my shepherd;
I shall not want.
He makes me to lie down in green pastures
He restores my soul;
He leads me in the paths of righteousness
For His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil;
For You are with me;
Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies;
You anoint my head with oil;
My cup runs over.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the LORD
Forever.

Some who knew the words joined in.

During the long trip down the stairs, the group sang, "Amazing Grace."

Sometime during their descent down the stairs, the first tower collapsed. The roar was deafening and it felt like an earthquake. The people grabbed on to whatever they could and held on for dear life.

Throughout this terribly frightening ordeal, Joy mentioned that the prayers and songs had an amazing calming effect on the group as they rushed to get out of the building. She also mentioned several times that a LOT of people were saved that day. The death of any one person, no less 3,000, is a horrible tragedy, and she wasn't saying this to lessen that fact, but she did say that from what she witnessed, the casualties could have been much more enormous.

When her group finally got out of the building, there was even more danger. The first building had already collapsed. There was blinding smoke and dust everywhere. A young man gave Joy his shirt to cover her mouth and nose so she could breathe through it. Then, he started to choke uncontrollably, so she gave him his shirt back and used her own to cover her face. There were bodies and debris falling from the sky. It was horrific. She said that a piece of concrete coming down looked like the size of a basketball until it came closer to the ground; then, the pieces grew as large as a car. She said it was a miracle that she and her group were not hit by anything that was falling from the sky.

She shared how the people that she met during this crisis have kept in touch and have traveled the country to share their stories. She believes that God spared her (and the others) for a reason; and the main reason was for her to grow in her faith and share what happened with others. She feels a sense of urgency to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ with everyone she meets. Because of her unique experience, people are more willing to listen than ever before. She believes that God is using her...in spite of something as horrific as this tragedy was....to turn it for good.

She believes that whether she had perished that day or not, the Lord was with her through it all. Her purpose in this life is not finished yet. But some day, her journey, just like the journey of those who died that day, will be over on this earth. And when that time comes, the Lord will take her home.

After Joy's speech, our pastor shared that it is obvious that Joy makes it her life goal to share Jesus Christ with everyone she meets. Countless people have come to the saving grace of the Lord through her story. In fact, dozens of people did just that at our sunrise service this past Easter Sunday.

An Article About Joy Shepard

Western Days Parade Grand Marshal is 9/11 survivor

By DAVID ROSS

An Escondido woman who escaped from the second World Trade Center tower a few minutes before it collapsed on 9/11 will be the Grand Marshal for this year’s Western Days Parade.
Joy Shepard was on the 61st floor of the second tower on the morning of Sept. 11, when the first of the hijacked airliners struck the other tower.

After 28 years of teaching, she had decided to change her career and become a financial advisor. She had arrived in New York City a few days before to begin the final three weeks of training at Morgan Stanley’s headquarters in the tower.

On Monday she went to work in high heels, but because she was uncomfortable in them, she changed into flats before going to work on Tuesday. That was one of the factors that may have saved her life.

About 9:30 a.m. they got a break in the training. Mrs. Shepard went out to the break area to get some decaf.

A young man told her, “We’ve been bombed!”

She looked out the window. She could see the Statue of Liberty, and she could see the fiery hole in the tower next to them.

“I could not believe my eyes! The PA came on and said, ‘Go back to your rooms,’ but I didn’t. I stared at the fire ball. I saw a gaping area and I couldn’t believe my eyes. I thought I saw an airplane tail being consumed.”

That didn’t make sense at the time, because most people then thought that a bomb had gone off in the tower.

“I just stared at it. I kept staring at it and analyzing it,” she recalls. She flashed on what had happened on her birthday in 1993. That was the day that someone drove a truck full of explosives into the World Trade Center.

She eventually wandered back to her office, stood in the door looking at her cell phone and day planner and thought; “I’ve got to go down.”

She told one of the trainers, “I’m really sorry. I can’t stay. I’ve got to get back to the ground.”

She started down the stairwell At the 44th floor she left the stairwell. The elevator stopped and someone offered to hold the door open so she could go back up. The PA came on again and repeated the announcement for people to return to their jobs.

She decided to continue down, this time through the stairwell. “If everything is all right, I’ll return,” she told herself.

The second plane slammed into the second tower while she was in the stairway.

Two women who were climbing down with Mrs. Shepard were knocked down by the impact. She kept her feet.

“When it hit, it just jolted the whole stairway. You could smell the jet fuel. A crack appeared in the wall. Smoke filled the stairwell. The skylight above us blew out of the building.”

Both women with her were wearing heels. One said she couldn’t go on.

“You’ve got to!” she told her. “I’m from California. This is like a little earthquake. You can do it. Put one foot in front of the other. We can make it.”

They heard the thunder of people entering the stairwell.

“Honey!” she told the woman. “You’ve got to get up right now. It’ll be a disaster if you don’t.”
She took her hand and they went down together.

On the way down a man, Mike, from the 84th floor, joined them. He had seen the first plane hit. He tried to persuade his co-workers to leave with him. Most of them stayed. Those who did were killed.

“We walked down together,” Mrs. Shepard recalls. “All of us. Nobody panicked. We kept each other calm. We prayed. We moved like one giant organism. Two by two all the way down the stairs.”

A young black man offered her his shirt to breathe through. She gave it back after a few minutes and told him he needed it for himself. She breathed through her blouse from then on.

They made it to the ground floor. It was dark. All the lights were off. .

Some firemen with flashlights met them. Her friend needed oxygen.

“By that time it was just Mike, the second woman and I,” she remembers. “A lot of people were trying to get through the revolving glass doors.

“Mike and I noticed that no one was going through the doors to the right. He held her hand and they both ran.”

She thought she would be OK on the ground, but it was worse than inside the building.
“People and debris were falling all around me. Wounded and torn people. It was a horrible disaster!”

Sheets of concrete fell like bombs. “ I don’t know how I was missed because I saw people being killed by concrete as big as buses. It was the grace of God that I survived.”

Mike told her: “We’re going to go north on Broadway.”

“OK, I’m with you kiddo,” she answered.

“I know a little Irish pub there. Do you want a drink?”

When they arrived he ordered a beer and she ordered ice water.

Suddenly there was a rumble and the pub shook from side to side.

“Joy,” Mike said. “Tower two is coming down.” There was a huge plume of smoke and a tidal wave of debris coming towards them.

“They are after the symbols of America. The Statue of Liberty. The Empire State Building. Let’s go to Greenwich Village. Nobody wants Greenwich Village,” he said.

They kept moving quickly, as did many. Others just stopped like deer in the headlights, and stared at the carnage.

They went to an apartment of a friend of Mike’s in Greenwich Village.

Mrs. Shepard was unhurt, except for some bruises on her left arm.

She was one of a handful from San Diego County who survived the attack. She is astounded that people want to hear her story.

“People are just amazed and I think my story had a happy ending. People like to hear happy news.”

Since September she has spoken to the journalism class at the school in San Dieguito where she taught for many years.

She’s also spoken at a Lutheran Church.

She told the school children, “There’s evil in the world, but there’s so much more good. I saw people helping people, and what was lost is a human loss, not a financial loss. If those buildings had been filled to capacity it could have been 50,000 dead.”

Her own firm lost 12 people out of 3500 employed.

Mrs. Shepard is very flattered by being named Grand Marshal. “I don’t know why I was chosen.”

She doesn’t know either why she was invited to speak to a gathering at National Heroes Week.
She told the audience, “First of all, I want you to realize, I’m not a hero. I’m a survivor. That’s the only distinction I have. The people who are your heroes are your parents because they are with you 24/7 and the teachers, the armed forces, your firemen and your police, who literally protect us and give up our lives in order to protect us.”

She remembers the firefighters who were waiting when she reached the ground floor, and who stayed at their posts with flashlights.

“I call them my golden guardian angels. They lit the way for us.”

They didn’t make it out themselves.

“I don’t think anyone thought those buildings would come down. They were magnificent buildings.”

She has a fear of heights, and that, more than anything, was probably what told her to start down when the first airplane hit, and what gave her the andrenaline rush to complete the climb down.

For several hours her husband of 43 years, Alan, and oldest son, David, thought she had perished.

Her husband had been awakened by his sister-in-law shortly after the first plane struck.

Her son, David, was driving to work when he heard the news. He turned around and returned home.

They watched TV for more than three hours, while Mrs. Shepard kept hitting the redial on a borrowed cellphone, trying to get through.

Finally she did.

Alan didn’t recognize her voice. He had already given her up for dead.

“Darling, it’s me, I made it!” she told him.

“What’s your birthday!” he demanded before he would believe her. They told her youngest son, Steven.

Another son, John, is a flight attendant living in France. He lost some of his friends on one of the three hijacked flights.

He spent the night in a cathedral, praying for his mother, until he finally got word that she was alive.

She was stranded in New York City for two days.

“I’m telling you, the way people helped each other back there. The spontaneous vigils. When the troops were coming into the city, the New Yorkers would form a parade route for them and hold up signs saying, “Welcome to our armed forces!”

A young woman from Florida offered her a car ride west to St. Louis, where she was able to book a flight out on Saturday.

During the drive to St. Louis she saw evidence of how the nation had pulled together. “We saw people waving flags. We saw American flags painted on the sides of barns.”

The plane home was filled with Marines, flying to Camp Pendleton.

Her family was waiting at Lindbergh Field as the plane landed shortly after midnight.

In retrospect, she’s glad she didn’t know just how serious things were on Sept. 11.
“At the time I was in a very calm mode, and maybe it was all those years of disaster training at the schools.”

She didn’t sleep for three nights after the experience, and really not for two months.

There were no nightmares, but when she closed her eyes she could see bodies falling.

“It’s with me. It will always be with me.” Vietnam vets tell her, “You’re a veteran, Joy. You were in a war zone.”

But she IS a survivor, and she feels that has to be for a reason.

“I’ve got a lot of living to do, and I’ve got a new lease on life. I’m going to do what I can to help people. I’m still an educator and enlighten them a little bit by how they can plan for their futures.”

Having a future of her own given back to her helps give her a unique perspective to that.

On the first anniversity of 9/11, our local newspaper asked readers to send in their answers to the question, "How has your life changed since 9/11/01?"

Below is a copy of what I sent in, as well as links to what was printed in the newspaper and on the Citizenlink website.

How Has Your Life Changed Since 9/11/01?

My best friend Kelly and her family went to NYC in 2002 and visited the cleared away site of the WTC towers. She brought back a special gift for me. It is a framed photo of the huge steel cross with the American flag in the background. This symbol of Christ's sacrifice for mankind was found in the wreckage.

At the bottom of the photo are 5 men praying. This photo reminds me that every day of my life, time spent with family and friends, is a precious gift from the Lord.

As a result of that fateful day, who didn't find themselves asking, "if I were to die tonight, where would I spend eternity?"

I realized that as a Christian, I should not ever waste the opportunity to share the Gospel with anyone who might be willing to listen. This tragic and sobering event in our nation's history has led many people to seek God for an answer to the purpose of their lives.

I have given away Bibles and books to many teens and adults who need that answer. I have created a website and discussion forum at Angels Helper which is dedicated to providing timeless biblical answers to life's most important questions.

The biggest change in my personal life has been not to shy away or hide my faith, but to boldly share Christ with others.

My new life verse is Ephesians 6:20b, "Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should."

Casting Out Fear

As we approach the fifth year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, Dr. David Jeremiah's sermon this morning is just the message that we need at this time. The following is an essay containing notes from his sermon as well as some additional commentary.

Dr. Jeremiah started out by sharing the story of FDR's history. You could look up the complete history on the internet. Here are some key points:

The trial and tribulations in the life of FDR could invoke terror and fear into anyone. At a time when the polio vaccine was not yet discovered, polio did, in fact, attack Roosevelt's body. He admitted that this devastating blow to his health brought him to the edge of despair and discouragement. However, he overcame the fear of his paralysis and learned to use what was not affected by the polio to build an incredible life.

In addition to his physical ailment, FDR also had a phobia. Being paralyzed, he lived with the constant fear of being trapped in a building on fire; worried that he could not get out in time. These two obstacles made people think that he would never do much with his life.

We now know better. FDR became the 32nd President of the United States. His inaugural speech, one of the longest ever recorded in history, dealt with the subject of fear. In fact, he coined the phrase, "we have nothing to fear but fear itself."

In our current war against terrorism, we could use a speech like that again!

Dr. Jeremiah asked, "What are you afraid of?" He listed several possibilities, such as job concerns, getting a pink slip, business deal failing, a son on drugs, a teen daughter becoming sexually active, health problems, worry over life expectancy. Did you know that our life expectancy has nearly doubled since [I think he said the founding of our country]? Despite this fact, we are more fearful than ever! Why is that?

Dr. Jeremiah then listed what some "studies" have shown when surveys are conducted regarding what people fear about their health. When those who suffered from the ailments of migraines, osteoperosis, cancer, brain injuries etc. the total came out to be 543 million sufferers! But the U.S. has only 266 million people! Someone is "double-dipping!" We see that "fear sells" and the media, of course knows this!

[Note: I wasn't able to keep up with note-taking at this particular point, but I think that Dr. Jeremiah shared a quote from Don Workman. The emphasis was on one portion of that quote.]

Don Workman's quote began with, "The elusive monster of fear...," and ended with "...on days when free-floating anxiety" takes you over. The point that Dr. Jeremiah was making is that many of us "...feel afraid, but don't know why. You just can't pinpoint the reason." [If I can find the entire quote, I will post it later.]

Summary of Dr. David Jeremiah's sermon:

A. Love is the opposite of fear.

The epistle of 1 John shows us how to overcome this fear through love. Some people believe that courage is the opposite of fear. But no, the Bible informs us that love is the opposite of fear.

Think about a child who wakes up in the middle of the night, crying out of fear of the dark or a bad dream. You don't run in there and say, "be courageous!" do you? Of course not! You run in and hold your child, giving him/her love and security by your presence.

1 John 4:17-19 reveals the perfection of love and that perfect love casts out fear!
1Jo 4:17

Herein is our love made perfect, that we may have boldness in the day of judgment: because as he is, so are we in this world.

1Jo 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

1Jo 4:19
We love him, because he first loved us.

God's love matures in us; and is then marked by confidence.

1Jo 4:12

No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.

Love is mentioned 41 times in this chapter! We can have the confidence that God loves us and thus we can get ahold of this fact. He is your Father and His love gives us the ability to love Him back.

Knowing God's love for you takes away fear!

This is the kind of love that the world needs to see. It is a love that is not "normal or natural."

Dr. Jeremiah then gave and example of such "not normal or natural" love. He mentioned a Chinese leader whose wife was a Christian. Despite the oppression and persecution inflicted upon the Christians in China, the leader noticed that they continue on in their private worship and don't retaliate. He asked his wife why they "put up" with that? And the wife told him that their love is "out of the ordinary." As 1 John 4:17-18 says, "...perfect love casts out fear."

B. Love protects us from discouragement.

We don't usually hear the term "dismayed" much in our time, but it comes from an old Hebrew word that means, "not to be intimidated by fear." The words, "be not dismayed" appear in many verses in the Bible, and each time those words are used, God is in the picture! God is telling His people to not be discouraged or afraid! Here's why:

Deu 31:8
And the LORD, he [it is] that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Jos 1:9
Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God [is] with thee whithersoever thou goest.

1Ch 28:20

And David said to Solomon his son, Be strong and of good courage, and do [it]: fear not, nor be dismayed: for the LORD God, [even] my God, [will be] with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee, until thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the LORD.

2Ch 20:15
And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle [is] not yours, but God's

[ In this portion of Scripture, the armies were coming to destroy them. As we see, in 2 Chronicles 20:16-29, the LORD helped them defeat the enemies of God and His people.]

C. Love protects us from danger.

In an interesting "battle of favorite Bible verses for casting out fear," a woman told famous evangelist D.L Moody that her favorite is:

Psa 56:3
What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.

Then, D.L. Moody shared his favorite:

Isa 12:2
Behold, God [is] my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the LORD JEHOVAH [is] my strength and [my] song; he also is become my salvation.

Moody's point was it's better to trust God and not fear, than to fear then trust God. It's like a "vaccine you take."

Because God love you - love dispels the fear.

2Ti 4:17

Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and [that] all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

2Ti 4:18
And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve [me] unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom [be] glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Psa 27:1

[[[A Psalm] of David.]] The LORD [is] my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD [is] the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?

Pro 3:25
Be not afraid of sudden fear, neither of the desolation of the wicked, when it cometh.

Pro 3:26
For the LORD shall be thy confidence, and shall keep thy foot from being taken.

Pro 29:25
The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD shall be safe.

Isa 41:10
Fear thou not; for I [am] with thee: be not dismayed; for I [am] thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

We don't have to worry that we will be defeated in some battle.

Dr. Jeremiah shared a brief story about an evangelist from England who came to witness to the Indians in America. He was the only "Englishman (a.k.a 'white' person)" to stay there and share the gospel, despite being treated in a bad way. But he remained fearless. He told the Indians, "I am about the work of a great God and I don't fear you. Touch me if you dare."

He was never harmed. His courage of faith is an example for all Christians today. God's love casts out all fear; there is no fear of man.

D. Love protects us from fear of death.

Hbr 2:14
Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil;

Hbr 2:15
And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage

Dr. Jeremiah shared a story about a man who was so fearful of getting Lymes disease from a tick bite (despite being assured by several doctors that he didn't get it), his anxiety and fear of death ended up killing him.

As a Christian believer, Dr. Jeremiah isn't in a hurry to die, but he isn't afraid to die. He knows what's on the other side.

E. Love protects us from fear of damnation.

1Jo 4:18
There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love.

The perfect love of God was displayed for us through Jesus at the cross. As believers, we won't face the judgment for our sins. But you can be "paralyzed on earth" for sin. You won't face the Great White Throne Judgment that non-believers will face.

If you are a Christian and you still sin? It is a relationship issue, not a salvation issue. If you have been genuinely saved, then you may need to go to the Father and repent of those sins to re-establish your relationship in Christ. But you won't be condemned for those sins because Jesus already paid the penalty on your behalf. Once saved, you can never be condemned for sin!

Rom 8:1

[There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

As believers in Jesus Christ, we will face the Judgment Seat of Christ in which loss of rewards may occur because for what has been done in the flesh.

Jhn 5:24

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.

Believers in Christ have already made peace with God.

If you are not a Christian? Then I would be very afraid. The only answer for you is Jesus Christ. I can't do anything for you.

One of the awful torments for the lost soul is to think of the days gone by where God's mercies through Christ were rejected. The lost will think, "I might have been saved; now His wrath is upon me forever." The lost men and women will endure that for all eternity.

When you die, you either go to heaven or hell. There is no place called purgatory. You must trust in Jesus Christ alone. Don't believe that? It doesn't mean a thing; it's still true. The mental anguish when you willingly rejected the gospel will cause mourning and regret; when you could have been saved!

Why would you play with that? Why live like that?

Accept Christ and you can live in the love of God!

Do you suppose that because you are young that you can hold off on such a decision? There are no guarantees.

Do you think that because you are old it's "too late?" It's never too late! One minute in hell would negate that premise!

Followers of Christ are protected by God's perfect love. His love will become perfected in you.

Editing Out The Truth!

"You know the email that encouraged you to watch the mini-series "The Path to 9/11?" Well, the liberal media is now altering it so that the Clinton administration won't look bad. Apparently, Clinton carries weight in Hollywood. Now, that the show is a doctored lie...I can't recommend it. Sorry, I take it all back."

ABC Altering 9/11 Film After Clinton Officials Express Outrage
Friday, September 08, 2006
Fox News Story

My friend Dran sent me that email. She had originally emailed me and several others, recommending the 9/11 Miniseries that will be broadcast on Sunday, September 11th and Monday, September 12th, 2006. The Clintonites had a hissy fit and squawked so loudly, forcing ABC to edit out the truth of that administration's incompetence!

Darn it! I really wanted to see that scene where Sandy Berger pushes documents down his pants! He was caught removing highly classified terrorism documents before the Sept. 11 Commission hearings that generated the report used for the television program.

WorldNetDaily reports:

"Berger and his lawyer told reporters he knowingly removed handwritten notes he made while reading classified anti-terror documents at the archives by sticking them in his clothing. They said he also inadvertently took copies of actual classified documents in a leather portfolio."

Clinton aide says 9/11 film 'correct.' Producer consulted with military attaché who saw aborted attacks on bin Laden!

The truth has a way of coming out anyway. The Democrats may get their wish to have the film doctored to hide their ineptitude when they had several opportunities to get Bin Laden. As the best seller, Dereliction of Duty shows, when it comes to protecting our nation from attack, The Clinton administration failed miserably.

So now they want to hide their screwed up past? However, they have inadvertently drawn tons of attention to what they purposed to cover up! Plus, as can be seen from the WND article, they can't shut everyone up!

As if that isn't bad enough!

What "Wall of Separation"?

My friend Dran graciously invited me to join a book club. The book she has chosen for our group to read is The Marketing of Evil by David Kupelian. Even though I have already read the book, I thought it would be interesting to share thoughts, opinions and concerns that are raised in the book with other women. We had our first meeting last night and I was pleased to meet all of the wonderful ladies! They come from interesting and diverse backgrounds, and we had a spirited discussion about the first two chapters. Dran, if you are reading this you did a great job as facilitator of our group!

Since I have covered the first chapter quite extensively in the past on this blog, I will just focus in on the second chapter, The Myth of Church-State Separation.

One of the questions that each member of the group is to consider after reading our chapter assignment is, "What did you learn from reading the chapter that you did not know before?"

Surprisingly, a few of the women admitted that they did not know that the phrase, "separation of church and state" does not actually exist anywhere in the Constitution!

Kupelian writes:

"The section of the Constitution that deals with religion is the First Amendment of the Bill of Rights - the first sixteen words of it, anyway.

There's the establishment clause ("Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion") and the free exercise clause ("or prohibiting the free exercise thereof").

The establishment clause - that's the one today's courts almost always focus on - simply prohibits the federal government from "establishing" a national church or from interfering with the established churches in the states! (Remember, several states already had state-supported "establishments of religion.")

Possibly you wonder whether the issue is really this cut-and-dried. After all, for the last half-century, judicial activists on the Supreme Court and lower courts, ACLU lawyers, the press, and the secular culture in general have embraced "the constitutional separation of church and state" as though it actually existed somewhere in the Constitution. Of course, none of these words - "separation," "church," or "state" - are in the First Amendment."

The author continues to explain how the wording of the establishment clause came about. There were several revisions over the course of four months until both the House and Senate agreed with the one that is now law.

During our discussion, Dran brought up many important points. The first one included a portion of a commentary written in 1811 by Supreme Court justice Joseph Story:

"The real object of the [First Amendment] was, not ot countenance, much less to advance Hahometanism [Islam], or Judaism, or infidelity, by prostrating Christianity; but to exlude all rivalry among Christian sects, and to prevent any national ecclesiatical establishment, which should give to an hierarchy the exclusive patronage of the national government."

Note that Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist came to the same conclusion as Story:

"It seems indisputable from these glimpses of Madison's thinking, as reflected by actions on the floor of the ahouse in 1789, that he saw the Amendment as designed to prohibit the establishment of a national religion, and perhaps to prevent discrimination among sects. He did not see it as requiring neutrality on the part of government between religion and irreligion."

Kupelian humorously states:

"Oh, by the way, as if to thumb its nose through time at the ACLU two centuries later, the very day after the House of Representatives adopted the First Amendmen'ts religion clauses, Rep. Elias Boudinot proposed a resolution asking President George Washingto to issue a national Thanksgiving Day Proclamation.

Boudinot said he "could not think of letting the session pass over without offering an opportunity to all the citizens of the United States of joining with one voice, in returning to Almighty God their sincere thanks for the many blessings he had poured down upon them."

On September 25, 1789, Boudinot's resolution passed, and within two weeks Washington responded with the following proclamation. Read it carefully:

General Thanksgiving
By the PRESIDENT of the United States Of America
A PROCLAMATION

WHEREAS it is the duty of all nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey His will, to be grateful for His benefits, and humbly to implore His protection and favour; and Whereas both Houses of Congress have, by their joint committee, requested me "to recommend to the people of the United States a DAY OF PUBLICK THANSGIVING and PRAYER, to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many and signal favors of Almighty God, especially by affording them an opportunity peaceably to establish a form of government for their safety and happiness:"

NOW THEREFORE, I do recommend and assign THURSDAY, the TWENTY-SIXTH DAY of NOVEMBER next, to be devoted by the people of these States to the service of that great and glorious Being who is the beneficent author of all the good that was, that is, or that will be; that we may then all unite in rendering unto Him our sincere and humble thanks for His kind care and protection of the people of this country previous to their becoming a nation; for the signal and manifold mercies and the favorable interpositions of His providence in the course and conclusion of the late war; for the great degree of tranquility, union, and plenty which we have since enjoyed;-- for the peaceable and rational manner in which we have been enable to establish Constitutions of government for our safety and happiness, and particularly the national one now lately instituted;-- for the civil and religious liberty with which we are blessed, and the means we have of acquiring and diffusing useful knowledge;-- and, in general, for all the great and various favours which He has been pleased to confer upon us.

And also, that we may then unite in most humbly offering our prayers and supplications to the great Lord and Ruler of Nations and beseech Him to pardon our national and other transgressions;-- to enable us all, whether in publick or private stations, to perform our several and relative duties properly and punctually; to render our National Government a blessing to all the people by constantly being a Government of wise, just, and constitutional laws, discreetly and faithfully executed and obeyed; to protect and guide all sovereigns and nations (especially such as have shewn kindness unto us); and to bless them with good governments, peace, and concord; to promote the knowledge and practice of true religion and virtue, and the increase of science among them and us; and, generally to grant unto all mankind such a degree of temporal prosperity as he alone knows to be best.

GIVEN under my hand, at the city of New-York, the third day of October, in the year of our Lord, one thousand seven hundred and eighty-nine.

(signed) G. Washington

[Source: The Massachusetts Centinel, Wednesday, October 14, 1789]

These inspiring words from the father of our country would no doubt have inspired a lawsuit threat from the ACLU (and the likes of Nancy Pelosi!) had the group been around then!

Now to the part that I learned from reading the chapter that I did not know before.

I always thought that Thomas Jefferson coined the phrase "separation of church and state." I knew that it was taken from a letter that was, ironically, intended to reassure the Danbury Baptists that the new federal government would not endanger the free expression of their religion. But what I found out was that Jefferson borrowed the metaphor from the sermon, "The Garden and the Wilderness," which was very familiar to Baptists of the time. As Jim Henderson, senior counsel for the American Center for Law and Justice, explains it:

"That sermon, rendered by Roger Williams (the founder of the Rhode Island Plantation colony, and a Baptist), depicted the church as a garden, the world as a wilderness, and the wall as a device of the Creator's invention that protected the garden from being overrun by the wilderness. Williams explained that from time to time, for the purpose of disciplining sin in the church, "it hath pleased" the Almighty to break down the wall.

Thomas Jefferson, ever the politician, knew when he communicated with the Baptists that "The Garden and The Wilderness" was well known and widely read nearly two generations later. He appealed to them in the terms of their own great man's idiom."

Wow! There you have it! The wall of separation was meant to protect "the garden" of the church from being overrun by "the wilderness" of government. No wonder Chief Justice Rehnquist has said, "The metaphor of a 'wall of separation' is bad history and worse law. It has made a positive chaos out of court rulings. It should be frankly and explicitly abandoned." In other words, it's a lie.

Not All Discrimination Should Be Eliminated

Not all discrimination should be eliminated. Walter E. William's excellent article, What's discrimination? informs us why.

Williams writes:

"Our lives are spent discriminating for or against one thing or another. In other words, choice requires discrimination.

Imagine how silly, not to mention impossible, life would be if discrimination were outlawed. Imagine engaging in just about any activity where we couldn't discriminate by race, sex, height, weight, age, mannerisms, college selection, looks or ability; it would turn into a carnival."

This is exactly why the battles going on in California over the need for Gov. Arnold to veto the remaining gay indoctrination bills are so crucial. If religious parents are not allowed to discriminate between what they want their children to learn about sexual matters, (particularly the fact that homosexual behavior is called sin in the Bible), and are forced, by law, to succomb completely to the desensitizing, jamming and conversion techniques being used by gay activists, then where will the line ever be drawn? One type of discrimination trumps another type? Who decides which is correct? Thus, we have, as Williams humorously said, "a carnival." I'd personally label the entire homosexual indoctrination agenda as leading to chaos!

I think it is high time for conservative Christians to get there voices out there in opposition to the gay agenda indoctrination issues. It's time for us to do some jamming! It works! Read about how hundreds of family supporters urged Schwarzenegger to halt the sexual indoctrination bills. We learned today that he vetoed AB 1437.

It is our duty to speak up! If we don't, we might end up like this preacher over in Britain who now faces court over the distribution of so-called 'offensive'gay leaflets.

What did the leaflets contain? Bible verses!

The thought police were out again, attempting to squash the free speech rights of this man!

"A spokesman for the police said the campaigner had not behaved in a violent or aggressive manner, but that officers arrested him because 'the leaflet contained Biblical quotes about homosexuality'.

The arrest of Mr Green by the South Wales Minorities Support Unit provoked a furious row. Church of England evangelicals said it represented 'an onslaught on freedom of speech and freedom of religious expression' and Tory MPs called it 'disturbing'.

The decision to prosecute Mr Green is the latest in a series of police initiatives aimed against those who have expressed public disapproval of homosexual behaviour."

My dear Christian brothers and sisters! Do you now see why you can't stand on the sidelines and stay silent on these issues anymore? If you do, you will see your current religious freedoms taken away and locked up by the thought police!

Your freedom of association rights will be gone regarding what you want to teach your children and grandchildren regarding homosexual behavior.

Your freedom of speech rights will be taken away from you, as well as your children and grandchildren in the future because the gay mantra thought police will put you in jail for quoting Bible verses that disapprove of homosexual behavior!

Don't worry if they call you a bigot! I've got the perfect comeback for you! When someone calls you that just say thank you! Then, say, "to you, the term "bigot" means:"

Bible
Is
God's
Only
Truth

Back to Williams' article.

Does anyone reading here remember the cat food commercial that said, "Fancy Feast is the cat food for cats with discriminating tastes?"

Why is it OK for a cat (and it's owner) to discriminate according to it's tastebuds, but it's not OK for human beings who revere and follow after God and His Word to be able to discriminate against what the gay activists want to teach to our own children?

What's wrong with this picture, folks?

Williams hits the nail directly on the head with the ending of his essay:

Common sense suggests that not all discrimination should be eliminated, so the question is, what kind of discrimination should be permitted? I'm guessing the answer depends on one's values for freedom of association, keeping in mind freedom of association implies freedom not to associate.

Love Breaks Our Hearts

The idea of "love" vs. "hate" comes up often in the conversations here at this blog. What's more, the sometimes fierce, ideological debates often appear to not ever resolve any differences. When such battles begin, usually the opposition draws a line in the sand and no matter what happens within the conversation, that line will never be crossed.

The question comes to mind, then, is that a good thing? Or a bad thing? It probably depends upon several factors.

However, in this post I'd like to focus in on what the Bible teaches us that we can know about God's love.

As a backdrop, I'd like to discuss a few lines about "love" from the movie, Moonstruck. Remember the plot of that story? Cher and Nicholas Cage had the starring roles. With her wedding to a close friend, Johnnie, just weeks away, she meets and falls hopelessly in love with - his younger brother, Ronnie (Cage). Recall the dialogue that went on between the two of them when they realized that they wanted to be together. This meant that "Loretta" (played by Cher) would have to tell "Johnnie" that she's not in love with him, but with his brother!

Remember the scene where Ronnie tells her (paraphrased here) that love "is not something perfect, but it's there because we're not perfect either," and that "we are meant to love the wrong people," and that "love breaks our hearts"?

"Loretta, I love you," he pleads. "Not like they told you love is, and I didn't know this either, but love don't make things nice - it ruins everything. It breaks your heart. It makes things a mess."
"We aren't here to make things perfect. The snowflakes are perfect. The stars are perfect. Not us. Not us! We are here to ruin ourselves and to break our hearts and love the wrong people and die."

As far as romantice love is concerned, Cage's lines are rated as one of the best dialogues of the eighties. But how poignant are those words! It gave us permission to be passionate and flawed. We laughed, we cried, we sighed and experienced joy while watching this movie. Kinda like life...wouldn't you agree?

But that just describes the "romantic" type of love. There is another kind of love...called "agape" love which is far beyond the scope of romantic love. It's the love that God has for mankind and that we, as His children can have for Him.

Unlike each one of us (meaning, we are all passionate and flawed), Jesus Christ was, is and always will be passionate and flawless towards us. His love is a perfect love. His love proceeds from the Father's love.

[The following includes notes from David Jeremiah's sermon on Sunday]

The Father's love was shown through giving us His Son. God told us His infinite love for us. He told us in a way that we couldn't miss His love for us. He gave the costly gift of His Son. God's love was no longer abstract, it is concrete.

1 John 3:16 - Hereby perceive we the love [of God], because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down [our] lives for the brethren.

In chapter 4, we read 3 times that God sent His Son for us.

1 John 4:9 - In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through him.

1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.

1 John 4:14 - And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son [to be] the Saviour of the world.

We only love Him because He first loved us. (1 John 4:9)

Sending His Son to be the "propitiation for our sins" tells us that no greater gift of God is conceivable or given. God is love and He is Spirit.

How can we demonstrate our love back to God?

2 Corinthians 9:15 - Thanks [be] unto God for his unspeakable gift.

Romans 8:32 - He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

We can realize the dynamics of the Trinity when the Gospel is realized, accepted and indwelled within the heart of the believer. But non-believers often can't (or refuse to) understand and comprehend this dynamic. It is my hope that this post might help sway the skeptic toward faith in Jesus Christ. (I know, I know...always the optimist! One can hope, can't one??)

Back to God's gift of His Son. Think about this. Do you have children? I do. I have two. I am challenged by the thought of how could I give my two children the way God gave His Son? It's unimaginable to me. Not something I'd ever want to think about.

How about you?

There was a story about a farming family and the dad took a part time job operating a drawbridge that allows trains to travel over a gorge. One day, the man's son climbed up the train track that was to be lowered. The man didn't see him until he had already started lowering the bridge for the safety of the passengers in the oncoming train. It was too late to save both his son and all the passengers on that train. What would you have done? Save the life of your son or hundreds of people?

I know what God did.

I was on that "train"!

Without that sacrifice, I would have died.

1 John 4:14 - And we have seen and do testify that the Father sent the Son [to be] the Saviour of the world.

1 John 4:9 - He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

1 John 3:5 - And ye know that he was manifested to take away our sins; and in him is no sin.

1 John 4:10 - Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son [to be] the propitiation for our sins.

1 John 1:7 - But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

1 John 2:2 - And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for [the sins of] the whole world.

God not only sent His Son, He sent a Savior. When God the Son came into this world, His death was worth every single person's life of all those who would believe!

God is love!

He demonstrated this by sending His Son, our Savior, into the world!

What should we do in return?

1 John 4:11 - Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.

Now, everyone is gonna squirm at these next questions. (I did!)

Are there difficult people in your life?

Are they high maintenance?

Don't want to love them?

How are we to love someone who is unlovable?

What's your answer??

My answer is He loved unlovable me!

I can love people through God's love for me!

This is the way you love people who drive you crazy!

If God so loved us - we ought to love others.

This is our obligation, fellow believers. No one who goes to the foot of the cross can (or should) escape it!

How do we love our brothers and sisters in Christ? How do we love them as they are and pray for them?

Romans 5:7-8

Rom 5:7
For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

Rom 5:8
But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

While we were yet sinners; which means that we were at enmity against Him!

Think about it. There wasn't anything in us for God to love. We didn't deserve it. We can't earn it.

We are to love others who don't deserve it too. We are to reach out to those who are unlovable.

What does this mean?

It means that out of the reservoir of God's love for me, I am set free to love others. It is a sacrificial kind of love

John 3:16-18

Jhn 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

Jhn 3:17
For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Jhn 3:18
He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

We are to love them in deed and in truth!

When it comes to sharing the gospel message, some of what "Ronnie" in Moonstruck said is true. When sin entered the world and "made things a mess," we realize the bad news of our spiritual condition. We cannot save our own souls from the consequences of "the ruining of ourselves;" that being, the consequences of sin.

Originally, we were not meant to physically die. But when sin entered the world, the punishment for not obeying God resulted in death.

But there is hope!

The love that broke the heart of God when He sent His Son to die for our sins is reflected in the fact that the love of Christ dying on the cross breaks our hearts too!

But it doesn't end tragically.

Our hearts breaking in this way means the restoration of what was lost at the Fall of man. Our repentance for sin and acceptance of Jesus' sacrifice for that sin reconciles us unto God the Father...now and for all eternity!

Jesus told us in Mar 8:36, " For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? "

Jesus also said that his kingdom is "not of this world."

Jhn 18:36 - Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

He warns us what can keep people from entering into faith in him and his kingdom:

Mar 4:19 And the cares of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, and the lusts of other things entering in, choke the word, and it becometh unfruitful.

Jesus specifically mentioned "lust." Isn't it true that lust is one of the frequent types of sin that keep people in bondage and away from God's truth? What are the "lusts of other things" that Jesus is referring to?

Jhn 8:44
Ye are of [your] father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

Rom 1:24
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Eph 2:3
Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.

1Pe 4:2
That he no longer should live the rest of [his] time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

2Pe 2:18
For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, [through much] wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.

2Ti 2:22
Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

2Ti 3:6
For of this sort are they which creep into houses, and lead captive silly women laden with sins, led away with divers lusts,

Jam 4:1
From whence [come] wars and fightings among you? [come they] not hence, [even] of your lusts that war in your members?

1Pe 4:3
For the time past of [our] life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

Jud 1:16
These are murmurers, complainers, walking after their own lusts; and their mouth speaketh great swelling [words], having men's persons in admiration because of advantage.

God's Word is truth. Jesus said of the Father in Jhn 17:17 "Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth."

And when we know the word of truth, we are sealed with the Holy Spirit:

Eph 1:13 In whom ye also [trusted], after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,

Jam 2:5 Hearken, my beloved brethren, Hath not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which he hath promised to them that love him?

1Pe 3:15
But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give] an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear:

1Pe 3:16
Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

1Pe 3:17
For [it is] better, if the will of God be so, that ye suffer for well doing, than for evil doing.

The truth is, we have a choice. The choice of our lifetime. We can choose the agape love of God through accepting Christ's sacrificial death at the cross for our sin and live for all eternity with Him, or die with our own sins on our own souls and live eternally without Him.

The choice is yours.

Critics: Stone in the Champion's Shoe

Hey Mark, Dani, DL, Anna, Saltnlight, Billy, (plus any other Christian friends who visit here), doesn't the following devotional accurately portray the critical spirits of those who post here and disagree with what is clearly written in God's Word?

1 Samuel 17:26-29

The story is told of a young musician whose concert was roundly criticized by the music critics of his day. The famous Finnish composer Jean Sibelius consoled him by patting him on the shoulder and saying, "Remember, son, there is no city in the world where they have erected a statue to a critic."

Well, there might be such a statue somewhere. But there are surely more statues erected to remember champions and heroes than critics. Yet critics will always be the stone in the champion’s shoe and they may be found close to home. When the teenaged David wanted to go down and confront the Philistine giant Goliath, his own older brother, Eliab, was his biggest critic. David was accused of being prideful and insolent, of not taking the cost of war seriously. What happened to David can happen to anyone who wants to be a champion for Christ. Others who are fearful of stepping out in faith and obeying God will try to make themselves feel better by criticizing you. But if God is calling you to step out and trust Him, there is no safer place you can be.

Far better to be criticized by God’s opponents than to disappoint God by not heeding His call.

Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain, and most fools do.

The Spiritual Significance of this Cultural Battle

DL Foster wrote an excellent essay which he entitled, Want to Stop AIDS? over at his Perspectives in Motion blogspot. I agree with him that too many pastors these days do not want to "offend" anyone by telling the truth about the sin and irresponsibility of rampant sexual immorality, including homosexual behavior.

We all can see, quite clearly, the physical problems that have resulted in an explosion of sexually transmitted diseases and premature death through the sin of homosexual behavior, as well as heterosexual immorality. But are we paying any attention to the spiritual significance of this cultural battle?

What especially caught my eye over at DL Foster's blog was the arrogance of a commenter who happens to think that the ASA (American Sociological Association) is such a "prestigious" moral authority on the subject of homosexuality and anyone (or any opinions, findings, results etc.) that doesn't agree with their homosexual-behavior-affirming doctrine, should be discredited.

This brings to my mind the Bible verses that proves that the ASA (or, any other humanistic organization) can never trump the sovereignty of God, the absolute truth of His Word, or the moral implications therein.

Isa 55:8 For my thoughts [are] not your thoughts, neither [are] your ways my ways, saith the LORD.

Isa 55:9 For [as] the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

I have posted the following essay before, and it is available in the archives, but I wanted to post it again. In light of DL's excellent article, the gay-behavior-affirming attitudes of Christian commenters like Boo and Deb, the idea that "discrimination" policies should trump the religious beliefs of Christians which is derived from Biblical truth, as well as the recent signing of SB 1441 in California, I thought it might be advantageous for the new crowd currently posting here to read this in order to find out why homosexual behavior cannot be condoned by Bible-based, born-again Christians.

The Days Of Lot

"Likewise as it was also in the days of Lot: They ate, they drank, they bought, they sold, they planted, they built; but on the day that Lot went out of Sodom it rained fire and brimstone from heaven and destroyed them all. Even so will it be in the day when the Son of Man is revealed." Luke 17:28-30

While I am painfully aware that this month's commentary is not without controversy, I have struggled long and hard with how to present it. Unfortunately, there is just no other way than to just get it out. If you are offended by it, then good. I hope that you will search the Scriptures to see if these things are so (Acts 17:11). Now that I have your attention, let me just say that I am going to do my best to expose this darkness, but share the love and mercy of Christ as well. I am also going to use a lot of Scripture, as the Holy Spirit needs to be able to do His job through the understanding of His Word.

The story of Abraham and Lot should be familiar to everyone, however I will refresh your memory on the details. Lot was Abraham's nephew and they had left Ur together in search of the Promised Land. Because God had prospered them both with huge herds of cattle and flocks of sheep, the land began to be too small for their needs. At that point they agreed to separate and each find room for their herds, flocks and families. Abraham let Lot choose first and he chose the plain of Sodom to dwell in. As time would go on, it would become apparent that Lot had made a poor choice.

The Bible does not have a lot to say about Sodom other than that it was very wicked.

Genesis 18:20-21

" And the LORD said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and because their sin is very grave,

21 I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry against it that has come to Me; and if not, I will know."

We aren't told just what this grievous sin is until the next chapter...

Genesis 19...

1 Now the two angels came to Sodom in the evening, and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom. When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and he bowed himself with his face toward the ground.

2 And he said, "Here now, my lords, please turn in to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise early and go on your way."
And they said, "No, but we will spend the night in the open square."

3 But he insisted strongly; so they turned in to him and entered his house. Then he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate.

4 Now before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both old and young, all the people from every quarter, surrounded the house.

5 And they called to Lot and said to him, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us that we may know them carnally."

6 So Lot went out to them through the doorway, shut the door behind him,

7 and said, "Please, my brethren, do not do so wickedly!

8 See now, I have two daughters who have not known a man; please, let me bring them out to you, and you may do to them as you wish; only do nothing to these men, since this is the reason they have come under the shadow of my roof."

9 And they said, "Stand back!" Then they said, "This one came in to stay here, and he keeps acting as a judge; now we will deal worse with you than with them." So they pressed hard against the man Lot, and came near to break down the door.

10 But the men reached out their hands and pulled Lot into the house with them, and shut the door.

11 And they struck the men who were at the doorway of the house with blindness, both small and great, so that they became weary trying to find the door.

As I said, the Bible doesn't say much about Sodom, but what it does say is loud and clear. There are days worth of study in this passage friends.

Why was Lot sitting at the gate? This signified his high position on the city council. Lot was tolerant of the rampant sin in the city.

What an apt picture of our day and age friends. This is our first clue to why Jesus pointed out the days of Lot as a model for the time of His return. However the second, and most glaring, description of Sodom is that it was filled with the sin of homosexuality. The men of Sodom wanted the 'men' that had come to Lot's house. In fact, they wanted them so bad that they tried to break down the door to get them, and, according to their own words, they wanted them just to have sex with them. They would not even accept the offer of Lot's daughters. Nope. They burned in lust for the men that had come to town.

So where does that leave us today?

Jesus likened the days of his return unto the days of Lot. What do we know about the days of Lot other than the rampant homosexuality that marked it? Isn't it odd that we do not know much more about it? I do not think so. In fact, I believe that it is exactly what Jesus was referring to.

The homosexual agenda has been pushing at us for decades with a marked increase in recent years. MTV has been a big factor in pushing it on shows like The Real World and Road Rules. Numerous TV shows, plays and even music stars have been instrumental in advance the homosexual lifestyle upon the world. However, it really seems that there has been a definitive increase in recent weeks. It is as if a line has been crossed, or a dam has been breached and the flood of homosexuality has begun to fill the world. I believe that the dam that broke was the Church.

The big news recently was the appointment of the so-called "Gay Bishop". Deluded statements like, "Once again Jesus has turned Good Friday into Easter Sunday" (quoted by Gene Robinson on the day of his appointment), and "We have come to the conclusion as a Church that homosexuality is not wrong. It is just another of the many ways that God expresses himself through man." (in a statement made days earlier regarding the so-called 'Heresy Meeting' days before the appointment by a Episcopalian Church leader).

I do not think that many folks realize the spiritual significance of this story. This should never have even come up for discussion. This was the last frontier for the homosexual agenda friends and now it has been reached! The moral implications not withstanding, the legal implications are going to be very grave indeed. The door is wide open for the homosexual lifestyle to permeate every aspect of society now.

You may have noticed that right on the heels of the bishop appointment were a flurry of TV shows on both cable networks and regular television (to use a phrase lightly). Many more are being advertised for the upcoming season as well. You see, that is the whole point. Now that Satan has officially sanctioned the homosexual lifestyle in the Church, what is holding back the same agenda in the world? Every church is now going to be expected, probably forced, to allow homosexuals to be placed in ministry positions. We can not only expect the flood to fill the obvious demonic controlled areas of society, but now the Church as well. Surely Jesus is coming for his Bride!

Is there anything wrong with homosexual sex? Many today actually believe that it is fine, if homosexuals just keep it to themselves. Well, what does the Word of God have to say about it?

Leviticus 20:13

If a man lies with a male as he lies with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination. They shall surely be put to death. Their blood shall be upon them.

It seems pretty clear what God thinks about the act of gay sex. But that was Old Testament some would say...

Romans 1 gives us an overall description of the fate of those who reject God and His salvation through Jesus Christ...

26 For this reason God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.

27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting.

And later we read that homosexuals will not enter in to Heaven unless they repent of their homosexual sins and receive Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior.

I Corinthians 6:9-11

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Again in I Timothy 1:10

10 for fornicators, for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and if there is any other thing that is contrary to sound doctrine.

I think the Bible is pretty clear, don't you?

The problem isn't with homosexuality exclusively. You can replace that sin with any from the list, it simply doesn't matter. Sin is sin is sin! That is the key to this whole thing. However, the elusion to the days of Lot by Jesus Christ, and the delusion that is spreading in the world today are unmistakably linked to the homosexual lifestyle. Thus it is the issue that needs to be dealt with today.

As followers of and believers in Jesus Christ we must be compassionate and seek every opportunity to extend the Gospel to all sinners. Homosexuals do not need to be reminded of their specific sins, but rather that their sins are forgiven through the blood of Jesus, should they want it and confess that Jesus is Lord.

For those who are watching the skies and looking for Christ's return, this impending flood is inching oh so much closer. The great rescuing of the Church is surely nigh. Keep the faith saints, and do not bend on the essentials of the faith. The degree of sin being displayed may be perceived as worse than any other, but it is still just sin. We were all guilty before we received the grace of God. Don't forget that God dearly loves the sinner and does not have any joy in the death of the wicked. He loves the homosexual just as much as any other, so much that he sent his Son to die for them too...

Written by Jerry Cesario

"[b]ut rather that their sins are forgiven through the blood of Jesus, should they want it and confess that Jesus is Lord."

That part from one of Jerry's statements describes the Christian, ex-gay person. Each story is unique, but the results are the same. They had their sins forgiven through the blood of Jesus because they confessed and repented of them and accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior in their lives.

I think that sometimes the people who label themselves as "gay Christians" only go part way in their allegiance to Christ and the gospel. He/she accepts Jesus as Savior, but doesn't go on to the sanctification part of salvation. Confession is one thing, and repentance is another. Repentance means turning away from former sin and not willingly participating in it anymore. In order for Jesus to be Lord in our lives, we need to give Him our entire being...including heart, mind, soul and body. We spend the rest of our lives aligning our spirit with the leading of the indwelled Holy Spirit of God. It is then that His strength to ward off the wiles and temptations of Satan become our strength!

Those who think that they haven't the strength nor ability to resist powerful, sexual urges and emotions towards the same sex are correct. They probably can't. Not alone, that is. But God's Word tells us how they can achieve it:

2Cr 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

Phl 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

This is the strength that has been found by ex-gay Christians! They are sanctified through Christ's strength, and the Holy Spirit's leading, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year for the rest of their lives!

I have heard absolutely amazing testimonies by ex-gay people about how they were completely delivered from homosexual behavior identity. This is an amazing transformation that cannot be denied!

Unfortunately, many homosexuals have been caught up into the lies and deceptions of Satan and their reprobate minds have convinced them that they can't be released from such bondage. In fact, you could take any type of sin and use such a view as an excuse.

The current cultural battle that is going on is not just about our "flesh and blood" existence. Powerful forces are at work in the spiritual realm that can end up having either a detrimental (by rejecting Christ) or positive (accepting Christ as Lord and Savior) result regarding the eternal destination of individuals involved in the deception of homosexual behavior.

I thought this part from Jerry's essay was very significant:

"I do not think that many folks realize the spiritual significance of this story. This should never have even come up for discussion. This was the last frontier for the homosexual agenda friends and now it has been reached! The moral implications not withstanding, the legal implications are going to be very grave indeed. The door is wide open for the homosexual lifestyle to permeate every aspect of society now." [bold mine]

In today's society, people are more apt to be deceived into thinking that homosexual behavior is not sin. The danger in that is that they are being seriously misled about this issue. And, to the detriment of their eternal souls, the result may be that they are more inclined not to confess it AS sin in their lives.

It is more obvious to all of us that the sin of murder, if NOT confessed, would keep someone out of the kingdom of God. However, people are often misled to believe that a "little white lie" or "stealing something small" or "homosexual behavior" is not as serious a sin, thus doesn't matter. Not true, is it? As Jerry pointed out in his article, "sin is sin is sin." Wouldn't holding back the confession of a specific sin on our souls keep us from being forgiven for it? God gave each of us a conscience to know right from wrong. What society dictates as NOT being wrong doesn't escape the fact that the Bible SAYS it is wrong and needs to be repented of in order to inherit the kingdom of heaven.

Satan has placed a strong delusion among people today to get them to think that they are 'saved' when what they are doing (i.e. via the gay-behavior affirming churches) is falsely 'sanctifying' relationships that are anathema to Holy God.

The book of Jude warns us about heresy and apostasy infiltrating the churches. As the "Way of the Master" book points out so very clearly, those that reject clear biblical teachings and embrace false doctrine and error, end up becoming false converts. It was evident then, as it is now.

Jude 3-23 (NLT)
The Danger of False Teachers

3 Dearly loved friends, I had been eagerly planning to write to you about the salvation we all share. But now I find that I must write about something else, urging you to defend the truth of the Good News.* God gave this unchanging truth once for all time to his holy people. 4 I say this because some godless people have wormed their way in among you, saying that God's forgiveness allows us to live immoral lives. The fate of such people was determined long ago, for they have turned against our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

5 I must remind you-and you know it well-that even though the Lord* rescued the whole nation of Israel from Egypt, he later destroyed every one of those who did not remain faithful. 6 And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the day of judgment. 7 And don't forget the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with sexual immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and are a warning of the eternal fire that will punish all who are evil.

8 Yet these false teachers, who claim authority from their dreams, live immoral lives, defy authority, and scoff at the power of the glorious ones.* 9 But even Michael, one of the mightiest of the angels, did not dare accuse Satan of blasphemy, but simply said, "The Lord rebuke you." (This took place when Michael was arguing with Satan about Moses' body.) 10 But these people mock and curse the things they do not understand. Like animals, they do whatever their instincts tell them, and they bring about their own destruction. 11 How terrible it will be for them! For they follow the evil example of Cain, who killed his brother. Like Balaam, they will do anything for money. And like Korah, they will perish because of their rebellion.

12 When these people join you in fellowship meals celebrating the love of the Lord, they are like dangerous reefs that can shipwreck you.* They are shameless in the way they care only about themselves. They are like clouds blowing over dry land without giving rain, promising much but producing nothing. They are like trees without fruit at harvesttime. They are not only dead but doubly dead, for they have been pulled out by the roots. 13 They are like wild waves of the sea, churning up the dirty foam of their shameful deeds. They are wandering stars, heading for everlasting gloom and darkness.

14 Now Enoch, who lived seven generations after Adam, prophesied about these people. He said,

"Look, the Lord is coming
with thousands of his holy ones.
15
He will bring the people of the world
to judgment.
He will convict the ungodly of all the evil things
they have done in rebellion
and of all the insults that godless sinners
have spoken against him."*

16 These people are grumblers and complainers, doing whatever evil they feel like. They are loudmouthed braggarts, and they flatter others to get favors in return.

A Call to Remain Faithful
17 But you, my dear friends, must remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ told you, 18 that in the last times there would be scoffers whose purpose in life is to enjoy themselves in every evil way imaginable. 19 Now they are here, and they are the ones who are creating divisions among you. They live by natural instinct because they do not have God's Spirit living in them.

20 But you, dear friends, must continue to build your lives on the foundation of your holy faith. And continue to pray as you are directed by the Holy Spirit.* 21 Live in such a way that God's love can bless you as you wait for the eternal life that our Lord Jesus Christ in his mercy is going to give you. 22 Show mercy to those whose faith is wavering. 23 Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. There are still others to whom you need to show mercy, but be careful that you aren't contaminated by their sins.* [bold mine]

A Prayer of Praise
24 And now, all glory to God, who is able to keep you from stumbling, and who will bring you into his glorious presence innocent of sin and with great joy. 25 All glory to him, who alone is God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Yes, glory, majesty, power, and authority belong to him, in the beginning, now, and forevermore. Amen.

*******
Who cares more about the salvation of the homosexual's soul? Those liberal, homosexual-behavior-affirming pastors, preachers, laypeople, and "friends" who only teach the "love of Christ" without warning of the judgment to come if they don't repent? Or is it those Bible-based, Jesus honoring and loving born-again Christian believers who take the warnings of Jude seriously and share such warning with those lost souls who are in peril?

23 Rescue others by snatching them from the flames of judgment. There are still others to whom you need to show mercy, but be careful that you aren't contaminated by their sins.
