We Need A Hero...

...to save us from ourselves!

This is a great song from the Jars of Clay CD - The Long Fall Back To Earth.

Jars of Clay "Hero" lyrics:

One spot on an empty canvas
One chair in an empty room
No place for a revolution
No hope if the signs are true
We stand at the edge of something
Will we ever know what it is?
Hold on cause the wind is rising
And we can't get away from it

Were in shock from the failed emotion
No cause in the shadow land
We sing while the city's burning
No room, no escape, no plan
We all never thought it would end this way

AND WE NEED A HERO
TO SAVE US FROM OURSELVES
WE NEED A HERO
TO SAVE US FROM OURSELVES

SAVE US FROM OURSELVES
SAVE US FROM OUR FEAR
WHEN THE SIRENS WAIL
WE NEED A HERO HERE

SAVE US FROM OURSELVES
SAVE US FROM OUR FEAR
WHEN THE SIRENS WAIL
WE NEED A HERO HERE

We hide on our knees in silence
Maybe God doesn't hear at all
And the wait overtakes the violence
And we watch as the giants fall
We're not gonna let it end this way

Jars of Clay is one of my favorite Christian contemporary music bands. Their first CD shared the verse where they got their name:

2Cr 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.

2 Corinthians 4 is one of my most favorite passages from the Bible.

2Cr 4:1 Therefore, since we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we do not lose heart.

2Cr 4:2 But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.

2Cr 4:3 But even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled to those who are perishing,

2Cr 4:4 whose minds the god of this age has blinded, who do not believe, lest the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine on them.

2Cr 4:5 For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord, and ourselves your bondservants for Jesus' sake.

2Cr 4:6 For it is the God who commanded light to shine out of darkness, who has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

2Cr 4:7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us.

2Cr 4:8 We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;

2Cr 4:9 persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—

2Cr 4:10 always carrying about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body.

2Cr 4:11 For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus' sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

2Cr 4:12 So then death is working in us, but life in you.

2Cr 4:13 And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, "I believed and therefore I spoke," we also believe and therefore speak,

2Cr 4:14 knowing that He who raised up the Lord Jesus will also raise us up with Jesus, and will present us with you.

2Cr 4:15 For all things are for your sakes, that grace, having spread through the many, may cause thanksgiving to abound to the glory of God.

2Cr 4:16 Therefore we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.

2Cr 4:17 For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory,

2Cr 4:18 while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.

I agree, we do all need a hero. I suppose I'm way too old fashioned! And not to give my age away, but I was born again in 1972 and never read anything but KJV and was raised on gospel music such as:

He Touched Me:

Shackled by a heavy burden,
'Neath a load of guilt and shame.
Then the hand of Jesus touched me,
And now I am no longer the same.

He touched me, Oh He touched me,
And oh the joy that floods my soul!
Something happened and now I know,
He touched me and made me whole.

Since I met this blessed Savior,
Since He cleansed and made me whole,
I will never cease to praise Him,
I'll shout it while eternity rolls.

He touched me, Oh He touched me,
And oh the joy that floods my soul!
Something happened and now I know
He touched me and made me whole.

I guess I need to "get with it"!

I hope you and your family have a great weekend!

Dear Steve,

You ARE with it - when you have Jesus as your Lord and Savior!

What beautiful prose you shared! Thanks for sharing it! Brought tears to my eyes. Why am I so weepy here on this blog lately??

I need to become more familiar with gospel music. The churches out here in California lean more towards the contemporary artists. I must search for that gospel song and listen to it!

God bless and have a wonderful weekend!

Thank you. You're kind as always. Yes ma'am, the gospel music I'm used to is rarely heard anymore. Such as "I'll fly away", "At The Cross", "When I lay my burdens Down", "The Old Rugged Cross", "Nothing But The Blood Of Jesus", etc.
Man, I miss that kind of music terribly.
Elvis' rendition of "He Touched Me" is very good. Thank you very much for the link. You've just showed me where to find alot of that music!
Have a great weekend!

Dear Christine,
Here is hymn which you in the American tradition will probably not know, but is right on line with your post:
"We rest on Thee", our Shield and our Defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
"We rest on Thee, and in Thy name we go"
(repeat last two lines)

Yes, "in Thy name", O Captain of salvation!
In Thy dear Name, all other names above;
Jesus our righteousness, our sure foundation,
Our Prince of Glory and our King of love.

"We go" in faith, our own great weakness feeling,
And needing more each day Thy grace to know;
Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing:
"We rest on Thee, and in They Name we go."

"We rest on Thee", our Shield and our Defender!
Thine is the battle: Thine shall be the praise
When passing through the gates of pearly splendour,
Victors we rest with Thee through endless days.
(Edith Gilling Cherry, 1872-97)
To the Jean Sibelius tune "Finlandia".

Christine: no doubt you have been following Bill Muehlenberg's blog, and you will know that today we have here in OZ a very crucial federal election. On one hand we have a leader who is an avowed atheist (but has tried very cleverly to woo the 'lefty Christians'), an open adulterer, a home wrecker who has seduced a husband away from his wife and family, and who has had past associations with radical groups such as the Socialist Forum - and who has lied repeatedly about those associations, Julia Gillard. She is the very opposite of Sarah Palin!
On the other we have a conservative Roman Catholic but with a stable and close family, and conservative values and politics. He is not everything I would want, but he a way sight better than the alternative.
I fear that if Julia and her crowd get in our country is gone; gone in every way imaginable. Please pray for us today, as I and others will be praying for our American cousins as November approaches, and beyond to 2012.

Beautiful MurrayA! What wonderful lyrics! I particularly love:

"Our Prince of Glory and our King of love."

How true! Jesus is both and we can trust Him forever - no matter what happens here on this earth!

And thanks for the details about the choices for candidates in Australia. What a huge (and, unfortunately - mostly terrible range of candidates!

What are the chances for the conservative Roman Catholic candidate? The other choices sound horrible! I hope that the people in Australia don't ignore the warning signs (like many did here in the U.S. regarding Obama in 2008) about those other candidates.

I will keep the election in my prayers!

But even if the worst candidate gets in, one day he/she will be voted out. That is what America is experiencing with Obama. Many Democrats are even saying that he is the worst pResident EVER! He beats Jimmy Carter - who held that title for several decades!

Other songs on the playlist at the bottom of the Youtube video that I like:

Is It Safe To Land (kind of a haunting song)

Two Hands (with one, I push You away - with the other I draw You near)

Closer (we all need to draw Him closer!)

A classic: Worlds Apart

Turn away and not become
Another nail to pierce the skin of one who loves
More deeply than the oceans
More abundant than the tears
Of a world embracing every heartache

Jars of Clay are great lyrics writers!
